Disease Surveillance Of Wild Hogs In Great Smoky Mountains National Park – A Focus On Pseudorabies, Tabbatha Cavendish, William Stiver, E. Kim Delozier
National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)
Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) has received credible reports of individuals obtaining feral hogs from other states and illegally releasing them near the park boundary. These reports have been supported by the removal of hogs with physical and behavioral characteristics not common of wild hogs in GRSM. In 2001, GRSM established a partnership with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to survey for wild hog diseases and, in 2005, similar partnerships were established with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services. From 2001 …

Free Websites Of Value For Humanities Students And Faculty Researchers, Eileen Mcelrath
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Studies show that faculty members, particularly those in social sciences, arts, and humanities, question the accuracy, reliability, and sufficiency of web resources for research. Undergraduate students, on the other hand, report that the web provides them information that they use to complete assignments. The purpose of this study is to find free web sites of value for humanities researchers and librarians. The study uses a content analysis of the annotated lists of librarian-evaluated free websites published in Reference & User Services Quarterly from 1999 to 2005 to determine the ones of value for Humanities researchers. Findings to date include approximately …

The Poet As Pretender: Poetic Legitimacy In Cvetaeva, Sibelan E.S. Forrester

Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando
Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
These lyrics capture a yearning for a place to call home. But what landscape is associated with this longing? For people living near the coasts or mountains of America, it must be hard to imagine longing for a "home on the plains"-but many Americans have had, and still have, a home on the Plains. The stereotypical American image of the Plains is flatness, austerity, emptiness. Not all would consider this an ideal landscape for home. So how did the people who settled on the Plains "view" this landscape? What did they see? How did this land come to be recognized …

Where the deer and the antelope play,

A Historical Perspective Of The Development Of Prekindergarten And The Evolution Of Quality Elements, Catherine C. Cross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This is a historical study of preschool nationally and partly internationally with a focus on elucidating the development of quality elements. The study will trace the beginnings of perkindergaten and how the programs have evolved to their current state.
The study contains a look at the current state of prekindergarten programs within the United States and how the differing states are measuring their programs. The use of the word quality is examined as it relates to how programs are designed and implemented. The study will also examine several different states that have been acknowledged as the front runners in prekindergarten …
Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines sexualized portrayals of women in fashion advertising found in metro-sexual men's magazines as visual rhetoric. Historically, studies on sexual images of women in advertising have focused on content analyses of these images and how they affect women. This study asks how sexualized imagery of women functions rhetorically as part of a branding message designed to sell products. The exemplar advertisements were chosen specifically for their sexual imagery from an earlier study by the researcher on sexual images of women in fashion advertisements found in men's magazines.
The messages interpreted within the visuals of this study reveal a …

Time Bending: Temporal Malleability And Organizational Response In Crisis Situations, Gary W. Carson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 created a crisis of epic proportions for the airline industry. The attacks, on the heels of the first financial losses in four years, threatened the existence of many airlines. It was incumbent on the CEO to make sense and offer a plan to control the crisis and move forward. There were fewer audiences more attentive to this senemaking activity than the stockholders. On the cusp of the organization, shareholder management is a central job of CEOs in the 21st century. This study focuses on CEO presentations to shareholders for American, Delta and Frontier Airlines before …
Challenging The Plantation Myth: A Comparison Of The Economic Histories And Relative Success Of Three Georgia Plantations From 1820 To 1870, Rachel Devan
Honors Theses
Though popular culture often makes the assumption that showplace plantations were the norm in the antebellum South, plantation archaeologists and historians have observed that the data say otherwise. Many of the Southern plantations that they study fall far short of the showplace ideal. In fact, a key role for plantation historians and archaeologists is to clear up the Americans' misconceptions about antebellum plantations by studying a range of plantation types and sizes. One way to accomplish this goal is to classify plantations under archaeological or historical study as either working plantations or showplace plantations based on economic data and use …

Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott
Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2005, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the major Quaker peace and justice lobbying organization in the United States, completed a substantial remodeling and expansion of its office building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. For example, the use of natural …
Legal Writing: Did Harvard Get It Right?, Laurel Currie Oates
Legal Writing: Did Harvard Get It Right?, Laurel Currie Oates
Mercer Law Review
For most law students, there is a moment when, in frustration or exhaustion, they throw up their hands and scream, "There must be a better way." While many of the cases in the casebooks are interesting, learning the law one case at a time seems, at best, inefficient, and at worst, just plain stupid. Wouldn't it be much easier, and better, if law schools used the same pedagogy that is used in many other disciplines: reading assignments, lectures, and exams that test whether students have learned the information set out in those textbooks and lectures?
When students question law school …

Whilst researching for manifestations of the Arthurian “legend” in popular culture, I discovered threads of connection with my interest in art and interdisciplinary study, leading me, somewhat circuitously, through alchemy to the field of psychology, and in particular, “New Age” self-help psychology. Arthurian legend has been referenced, adapted and utilized fairly extensively in this field, with titles ranging from Crossing to Avalon: A Woman’s Midlife Pilgrimage1 to The Return of King Arthur: Completing the Wholeness, Inner Strength, and Self-Knowledge. 2 However, based on my research to date, I have found these works have received little acknowledgement by serious …
A Suffering Messiah? Messianic Expectations In Light Of The Dead Sea Scrolls: The Case Of 1qisa 52:14, Jenifer A. Manginelli
A Suffering Messiah? Messianic Expectations In Light Of The Dead Sea Scrolls: The Case Of 1qisa 52:14, Jenifer A. Manginelli
Doctor of Ministry
This paper considers the possibility of an intended messianic reading at Isaiah 52: 14 in the Great Isaiah Scroll (lQisaa) in light of the New Testament's presentation of Jesus as the suffering Messiah. Such a reading may evince a connection on the part of the scribe between the vicarious suffering of the servant of the LORD and a messianic figure. The plausibility of a messianic reading is considered through analysis of the text, followed by an exploration of the likelihood that such a connection would have been made on the basis of what we can discern of the Qumran community's …

Amphiod Densities And Indices Of Wetland Quality Across The Upper-Midwest, Usa, Michael J. Anteau, Alan D. Afton
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Nutritional, behavioral, and diet data for lesser scaup (Aythya affinis [Eyton, 1838]) indicates that there has been a decrease in amphipod (Gammarus lacustris [G. O. Sars, 1863] and Hyalella azteca [Saussure, 1858]) density and wetland quality throughout the upper-Midwest, USA. Accordingly, we estimated densities of Gammarus and Hyalella in six eco-physiographic regions of Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota; 356 randomly selected semi-permanent and permanent wetlands were sampled during springs 2004 and 2005. We also examined indices of wetland quality (e.g., turbidity, fish communities, aquatic vegetation) among regions in a random subset of these wetlands (n = 267). Gammarus …

Interpreting Vatican Ii: “A New Pentecost”, Thomas Hughson
Interpreting Vatican Ii: “A New Pentecost”, Thomas Hughson
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Pope John XXIII's prayerful phrase “a new Pentecost” linked Vatican II with the Holy Spirit and has interpretative potential. It focuses the pneumatological dimensions of the epochal event and documents. The article considers Pentecost in the constitution of the church, emphasizes the pneumatological difference, underlines the finality of Vatican II toward renewal in the church's (now dialogical) mission, and concludes to a completeness in the council.

Prelude To Compatibility Between Human Rights And Intellectual Property, Sharon E. Foster
Prelude To Compatibility Between Human Rights And Intellectual Property, Sharon E. Foster
Chicago Journal of International Law
The goals of advocates for human rights and intellectual property rights are not incompatible, and in fact are harmonious and attainable without excluding or prioritizing one over the other. Yet today we are faced with growing, entrenched views that the only way to achieve the human rights goals of health, food, and education is through a reduction of intellectual property rights, and the view that only by expanded intellectual property rights can we provide incentives for innovation that will address the concerns for health, food, and education. The appearance of the conflict arises from the fact that certain human rights …
