"George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People": Hip Hop, Public Discourse And Black Politics In The Early 21st Century, Hazel Bell James Cole

Recently, more scholars are examining hip hop as a powerful cultural, communicative force, yet hip hop's political orientation goes unnoticed. This study highlights the politics found in hip hop culture and in rap music since 2000 by exploring hip hop as a social movement. This study utilizes a critical, cultural approach by applying ideological case study and textual analyses methods. Song lyrics, activist efforts and black politics prove the political orientation of hip hop culture, which revealed that rap music in general is limited by capitalistic, hegemonic restraints juxtaposed to rappers serving as the legitimate voice of the marginalized and …

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer
Southern African Migration Programme
This policy brief discusses a key paradox in relation to Zimbabwean migration into South Africa. While Zimbabwean migration since 2000 has been the largest concentrated flow in South African history, South Africa’s reaction to this movement has been characterised by the attempt to continue with ‘business as usual’ and ‘no crisis’ responses.1 Compared with most other developed and developing countries, where an inflow of tens or hundreds of thousands of people is usually treated as a political crisis, such a non-response to over a million immigrants requires explanation.
The lack of commensurate responses is especially noticeable within the various departments …

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Caperton Forgiveness Styles Inventory, Duane Caperton
An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Caperton Forgiveness Styles Inventory, Duane Caperton
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research was an investigation into the process of forgiveness. The analysis of qualitative interviews with nearly 100 participants suggested four different approaches, or styles, of forgiving and non-forgiving. The Intrapersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. The Interpersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the offending persons. The Easy Going style describes the people who never forgive anyone because they rarely or never feel offended and consequently rarely or never feel the need to forgive others. The Grudge Holder …

Domain hierarchies are widely used as models underlying information retrieval tasks. Formal ontologies and taxonomies enrich such hierarchies further with properties and relationships associated with concepts and categories but require manual effort; therefore they are costly to maintain, and often stale. Folksonomies and vocabularies lack rich category structure and are almost entirely devoid of properties and relationships. Classification and extraction require the coverage of vocabularies and the alterability of folksonomies and can largely benefit from category relationships and other properties. With Doozer, a program for building conceptual models of information domains, we want to bridge the gap between the vocabularies …

Intelligence Techniques Are Needed To Further Enhance The Advantage Of Groups With Diversity In Problem Solving, Oscar Castillo, Patricia Melin, J. Esteban Gamez, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In practice, there are many examples when the diversity in a group enhances the group's ability to solve problems -- and thus, leads to more efficient groups, firms, schools, etc. Several papers, starting with the pioneering research by Scott E. Page from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, provide a theoretical justification for this known empirical phenomenon. However, when the general advise of increasing diversity is transformed into simple-to-follow algorithmic rules (like quotas), the result is not always successful. In this paper, we prove that the problem of designing the most efficient group is computationally difficult (NP-hard). Thus, in …

Mercer Law Review
Today, the topic may be voter photo identification cards. Tomorrow, teacher discipline may be on the agenda. With administrative law, many of the front-burner issues that appear in the news are decided according to administrative procedures, and those cases generally are well ahead of litigation entering the court system. This Article surveys cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals from June 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008. There has been a deliberate attempt to omit cases that would likely be included in other traditional topics for articles in this volume. While there may be cases …

Wherefore Art Thou Guidelines? An Empirical Study Of White-Collar Criminal Sentencing And How The Gall Decision Effectively Eliminated The Sentencing Guidelines, S. Patrick Morin
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Until the passage of the U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines in 1984, federal judges had relatively wide discretion in sentencing federal offenders up to the statutory maximum. This judicial discretion led to a disparity in the sentences of similarly situated offenders, particularly in white-collar cases. The Guidelines attempted to eliminate this disparity by establishing maximum and minimum sentences for certain offenses based on the characteristics of the crime. An important feature of the Guidelines system was its mandatory nature, which decreased and structured the judiciary‘s discretion within bounds set by Congress.
The mandatory application of the Guidelines resulted in stiff …

Developing A Virtual Community Of Practice Framework For A Dispersed Group Of Innovation Practitioners, Ami S. Henriques
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project lays the groundwork for establishing a virtual community of practice (VCoP) for innovation professionals within my organization across 8 countries and multiple business units. The literature review includes definitions of communities of practice, how they vary from other types of groups and teams, the benefits they provide to the organization and to the individual, as well best practices and considerations for building and launching a VCoP. The deliverable is a proposal that will be submitted to the global leadership of the organization for review and approval.
