Abcb6 Is A Porphyrin Transporter With A Novel Trafficking Signal That Is Conserved In Other Abc Transporters, Yu Fukuda

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters play an important role as a barrier to protect cells from the accumulation of toxic xenobiotics and metabolites due to their ability to translocate a wide array of compounds across lipid bilayers. However, many ABC transporters, especially the ones localized in the intracellular organelles, are involved in critical biological processes such as antigen presentation. The core unit of ABC transporters contains two functional domains: the membrane spanning domain (MSD) and the nucleotide binding domain. The full transporters contain two of these units in tandem in a single polypeptide, whereas the half transporters only contain one …

Reconstructing Three-Dimensional Shape Envelopes From Time-Resolved Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Data, Jessica Lamb, Lisa W. Kwok, Xiangyun Qiu, Kurt Andresen, Hye Yoon Park, Lois Pollack Dec 2008

Reconstructing Three-Dimensional Shape Envelopes From Time-Resolved Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Data, Jessica Lamb, Lisa W. Kwok, Xiangyun Qiu, Kurt Andresen, Hye Yoon Park, Lois Pollack

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Modern computing power has made it possible to reconstruct low-resolution, three-dimensional shapes from solution small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data on biomolecules without a priori knowledge of the structure. In conjunction with rapid mixing techniques, SAXS has been applied to time resolve conformational changes accompanying important biological processes, such as biomolecular folding. In response to the widespread interest in SAXS reconstructions, their value in conjunction with such time-resolved data has been examined. The group I intron from Tetrahymena thermophila and its P4–P6 subdomain are ideal model systems for investigation owing to extensive previous studies, including crystal structures. The goal of this …

Imaging Activity Of Neuronal Populations With New Long-Wavelength Voltage-Sensitive Dyes, Joseph P. Wuskell, Leslie M. Loew Dec 2008

Imaging Activity Of Neuronal Populations With New Long-Wavelength Voltage-Sensitive Dyes, Joseph P. Wuskell, Leslie M. Loew

UCHC Articles - Research

We have assessed the utility of five new long-wavelength fluorescent voltage-sensitive dyes (VSD) for imaging the activity of populations of neurons in mouse brain slices. Although all the five were capable of detecting activity resulting from activation of the Schaffer collateral-CA1 pyramidal cell synapse, they differed significantly in their properties, most notably in the signal-to-noise ratio of the changes in dye fluorescence associated with neuronal activity. Two of these dyes, Di-2-ANBDQPQ and Di-1-APEFEQPQ, should prove particularly useful for imaging activity in brain tissue and for combining VSD imaging with the control of neuronal activity via light-activated proteins such as channelrhodopsin-2 …

Diagnosing Death: Why Does It Remain "Well Settled And Persistently Unresolved"?, Melissa M. Goldstein

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

For ten days after Motl Brody had been declared dead by physicians, the 12-year-old boy lay in an intensive-care unit of Children's National Medical Center, sustained by drugs and a ventilator. His Orthodox Jewish parents insisted that, according to religious law, Motl remained alive because his heart continued to beat. District of Columbia law said he did not.

Although statutes on the books of every U.S. state allow a determination of death when all functions of the brain, including the brain stem, have irreversibly ceased, there is continued debate, especially in religious, philosophical, and bioethics contexts, about how, or even …

Getting The Board On Board: Helping Board Members Understand Early Childhood Programs, Michael Wischnowski

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

The article discusses the goal of early childhood administrators to make their programs visible to their board members, by providing data-based information about services. It outlines the key roles and responsibilities of not-for-profit or public boards. A well-presented information helps the board make the best policy decisions for those it serves. Moreover, it offers tips about making board presentations that may facilitate better understanding and policy making by board members.

An Exploratory Investigation Of Frequently Cited Articles From The Early Childhood Intervention Literature, 1994 To 2005, Juli Pool, Marisa Macy, Suzanne Bells Mcmanus, Jina Noh

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors explored frequently cited articles across four peer-reviewed journals in early intervention (EI) and early childhood special education (ECSE). The Social Science Citation Index was used to examine journal articles from 1994 to 2005 in: Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Infants and Young Children, Journal of Early Intervention, and Topics in Early Childhood Special Education. Results for the most frequently cited EI/ECSE journal articles are reported.

Spatial Misalignment In Time Series Studies Of Air Pollution And Health Data, Roger D. Peng, Michelle L. Bell Dec 2008

Spatial Misalignment In Time Series Studies Of Air Pollution And Health Data, Roger D. Peng, Michelle L. Bell

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Time series studies of environmental exposures often involve comparing daily changes in a toxicant measured at a point in space with daily changes in an aggregate measure of health. Spatial misalignment of the exposure and response variables can bias the estimation of health risk and the magnitude of this bias depends on the spatial variation of the exposure of interest. In air pollution epidemiology, there is an increasing focus on estimating the health effects of the chemical components of particulate matter. One issue that is raised by this new focus is the spatial misalignment error introduced by the lack of …

Dealing With 'Messy Policy Problems' In The Health Care Sector, Knowledge@Smu Dec 2008

Dealing With 'Messy Policy Problems' In The Health Care Sector, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

In his new book, Dealing with Messy Policy Problems, to be published in April 2009, political science professor Steven Ney of the Singapore Management University offers insights on how to make sense of complex, messy and often overlapping policy problems. Ney contends that having conflicts is a necessary part of the process of finding solutions to complex policy issues. He spoke to Knowledge@SMU on policy issues relating to the crisis in global health care. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
