Biological ice nucleators (IN) function as catalysts for freezing at relatively warm temperatures (warmer than -10°C). We examined the concentration (per volume of liquid) and nature of IN in precipitation collected from Montana and Louisiana, the Alps and Pyrenees (France), Ross Island (Antarctica), and Yukon (Canada). The temperature of detectable ice-nucleating activity for more than half of the samples was ≥ -5°C based on immersion freezing testing. Digestion of the samples with lysozyme (i.e., to hydrolyze bacterial cell walls) led to reductions in the frequency of freezing (0-100%); heat treatment greatly reduced (95% average) or completely eliminated ice nucleation at …

Resonance Raman Interrogation Of The Consequences Of Heme Rotational Disorder In Myoglobin And Its Ligated Derivatives, Freeborn Rwere, Piotr J. Mak, James R. Kincaid
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Resonance Raman spectroscopy is employed to characterize heme site structural changes arising from conformational heterogeneity in deoxyMb and ligated derivatives, i.e., the ferrous CO (MbCO) and ferric cyanide (MbCN) complexes. The spectra for the reversed forms of these derivatives have been extracted from the spectra of reconstituted samples. Dramatic changes in the low-frequency spectra are observed, where newly observed RR modes of the reversed forms are assigned using protohemes that are selectively deuterated at the four methyl groups or at the four methine carbons. Interestingly, while substantial changes in the disposition of the peripheral vinyl and propionate groups can be …

The Nature And Dynamics Of Internet Pornography Exposure For Youth., Chiara Sabina, Janis Wolak, David Finkelhor
The Nature And Dynamics Of Internet Pornography Exposure For Youth., Chiara Sabina, Janis Wolak, David Finkelhor
Sociology
Abstract
We examined exposure to Internet pornography before the age of 18, as reported by college students (n = 563), via an online survey. Ninety-three percent of boys and 62% of girls were exposed to online pornography during adolescence. Exposure prior to age 13 was relatively uncommon. Boys were more likely to be exposed at an earlier age, to see more images, to see more extreme images (e.g., rape, child pornography), and to view pornography more often, while girls reported more involuntary exposure. If participants in this study are typical of young people, exposure to pornography on the Internet can …
Studies Of Verapamil Binding To Human Serum Albumin By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Rangan Mallik, Michelle J. Yoo, Sike Chen, David S. Hage
Studies Of Verapamil Binding To Human Serum Albumin By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Rangan Mallik, Michelle J. Yoo, Sike Chen, David S. Hage
David Hage Publications
The binding of verapamil to the protein human serum albumin (HSA) was examined by using high performance affinity chromatography. Many previous reports have investigated the binding of verapamil with HSA, but the exact strength and nature of this interaction (e.g., the number and location of binding sites) is still unclear. In this study, frontal analysis indicated that at least one major binding site was present for R- and S-verapamil on HSA, with estimated association equilibrium constants on the order of 104 M−1 and a 1.4-fold difference in these values for the verapamil enantiomers at pH 7.4 …

In Vitro Phytochemical Screening And Antibacterial Activity Of Aqueous And Methanolic Leaf Extracts Of Tridax Procumbens Against Bovine Mastitis Isolated Staphylococcus Aureus, Rangasamy Dhanabalan Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Tridax procumbens Linn is a tropically distributed medicinal plant. Antimicrobial activity of aqueous and methanol extracts of this plant was investigated by agar disc and well-diffusion method against bovine mastitis causing Staphylococcus aureus strains. The plant extracts showed inhibitory activity against the tested organisms. Phytochemical screening of the plant revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids. The study scientifically validates the use of this plant in traditional and ethnoveterinary medicine.

Anti-Hyperglycaemic And Insulin Release Effects Of Coccinia Grandis (L.) Voigt Leaves In Normal And Alloxan Diabetic Rats, Asirvatham Doss, Rangasamy Dhanabalan
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt (Cucurbitaceae), occurs throughout the world and has intensive popular use in the treatment of infections. The main aim of the present work was to investigate the antidiabetic effects of aqueous extracts of leaves of C. grandis obtained by Decoction method. Graded doses of the aqueous extract were administered to normal and experimental diabetic rats for 10 days. Significant (p < 0.05) reduction in fasting blood glucose levels were observed in the normal as well as in the treated diabetic animals. Serum insulin levels were not stimulated in the animals treated with the extract. The changes in body weight, serum lipid profiles, liver glycogen levels were assessed in the extract treated diabetic rats and compared with diabetic control and normal animals.

Revitalization Of Siddha Medicine In Tamilnadu, India - Changing Trends In Consumer’S Attitude: A Survey, A. Krishnan Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Socioeconomic characteristics have significant impact on consumer’s attitude towards the usage of traditional system of medicine. Though traditional systems of medicine have made significant contributions towards fulfilling healthcare needs of the people in the past, impacts of modern medicine have been so large that traditional medicine witnessed a dark period in southern part of India. While such practices are common in the rural/ remote areas, of late, change in the trend with respect to the usage of Siddha medicine as complementary alternative therapy among urban population has been observed. Present study aims to evaluate the resurgence of interest in Siddha …

Gender, Health And Mobility: Health Concerns Of Women Migrant Farm Workers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin
Gender, Health And Mobility: Health Concerns Of Women Migrant Farm Workers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin
Health Studies
The economic impacts of temporary labour migration, for both migrants and host countries, often overshadow and render invisible the social consequences.
Based on three years of ethnographic research in Mexico, Jamaica and Canada, this article addresses issues of health and health care among women migrant workers in Canada’s Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP). This temporary labour migration program annually employs some 20,000 workers from Mexico and the Caribbean in the Canadian agricultural industry.
Approximately three per cent of SAWP participants are women. In FOCALPoint’s 2007 Special Edition on Migration, Kerry Preibisch demonstrated the ways in which women’s migration is characterized …

Gorbachev, Yeltsin And Putin: Soviet-Russian Foreign Relations With The United States From 1990 Through The Fall Of 2008: A Strategic Analysis, Terry W. Simmons
Open Access Dissertations
Cold War Soviet foreign policy was driven by a strategic competition. A competition-detente cycle based on the superpower rivalry between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, including the Warsaw Pact dependencies, and the United States of America and its respective alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) existed for over forty-five years. Following the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact and the implosion of the USSR, remnant Soviet and subsequent Russian foreign policy, changed dramatically. Though some fragmentary Soviet style vertical controls of the foreign policy of the transitional Gorbachev years and the first years of Yeltsin's first administration were recognizable, …

Industrial sensing, monitoring and automation offer a lucrative application domain for networking and communications. Wired sensor networks have traditionally been used for these applications because such networks adequately meet two vital requirements, i.e., low latency and high reliability, needed for an industrial deployment. Wired sensor networks, however, are not very cost effective due to higher components’ cost. These networks also lack the flexibility needed for subsequent topological changes. Wireless sensor networks (WSN), on the other hand, are less expensive and offer high degree of flexibility. Wireless networks, therefore, can offer an attractive and viable solution for industrial sensing and automation. …
