"It's All One Big Circle": Welfare Discourse And The Everyday Lives Of Urban Adolescents, Staci T. Lowe Sep 2008

"It's All One Big Circle": Welfare Discourse And The Everyday Lives Of Urban Adolescents, Staci T. Lowe

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform succeeded, in part, because of discourse that characterized the poverty problem as one of long-term dependency and personal irresponsibility. Adolescent pregnancy was targeted as both cause and manifestation of a welfare crisis. This study examined how welfare reform was perceived and experienced by lowincome, urban adolescents. Findings from interviews revealed that adolescents agreed with many of the basic tenets of welfare reform, largely because they had appropriated much of the discourse prevalent in wider society. However, their complex life stories contained a powerful subtext concerning structural determinants of poverty that ran counter to prevailing notions of "personal responsibility."

Overexpression Of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 In Tumor Epithelial Cells Correlates With Colorectal Cancer Metastasis., David S Zuzga, Ahmara Vivian Gibbons, Peng Li, Wilhelm Johannes Lubbe, Inna Chervoneva, Giovanni Mario Pitari

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Colorectal cancer mortality largely reflects metastasis, the spread of the disease to distant organs. Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) is a key regulator of metastasis and a target for anticancer strategies in colon cancer. Here, the overexpression of MMP-9 in pure tumor epithelial, but nor stromal, cell populations was associated with metastatic progression of colorectal cancer, as defined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and confirmed by immunostaining. Thus, cancer cell MMP-9 represents a novel, selective prognostic and predictive factor that may be exploited for more effective disease stage stratification and therapeutic regimen selection in patients with colorectal cancer.

Rhabdomyosarcoma Embryonal Type: In A Three And A Half Year Old Girl, Ameer A Khowaja, Saqib Ali Gowani, Asmatullah Khan, Saulat H. Fatimi

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Rhadomyosarcoma is the most common tumour of the soft tissues in infants and children. We report a case of a 3 1/2 year old girl who presented with a swelling over the neck. Swelling was diagnosed as Rhabdomyosarcoma (embryonal type). Tumour mass was found to be unresectable initially. The patient was subjected to multiple courses of checmotherapy, which shrunk the tumour significantly. There was simultaneous development of cystic lesions in upper lobe of right lung. Excision of the remnant rhabdomyosarcoma mass and biopsy of right lung with cystectomy of right upper lobe cystic lesion was performed. The patient fully recovered …

Non-Blackbird Avian Occurrence And Abundance In North Dakota Sunflower Fields, Dionn A. Schaaf, George M. Linz, Curt Doetkott, Mark W. Lutman, William J. Bleier Sep 2008

Non-Blackbird Avian Occurrence And Abundance In North Dakota Sunflower Fields, Dionn A. Schaaf, George M. Linz, Curt Doetkott, Mark W. Lutman, William J. Bleier

The Prairie Naturalist

Sunflower fields are well-documented as foraging habitat for fallmigrating blackbirds (Family Icteridae). There is, however, a paucity of information on the use of sunflower fields by non-blackbirds. We assessed non-blackbird use of 12 ripening sunflower fields in the Prairie Pothole Region of central North Dakota. From mid-August to mid-October 2000, we counted 4,129 individual birds, consisting of 22 families and 61 species, in the sample fields and within 5 m of the field edges. We saw the largest number of birds from 18 September to 27 September. The Family Emberizidae (sparrows) accounted for 26% of the species and 20% of …

Meaning And Occupational Engagement In A Day Program For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Wanda Jean Mahoney

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

"September 2008" A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Occupational Therapy. Typescript Project Advisor : Elysa Roberts Occupational justice recognizes that all people have the right to occupational engagement because it is through occupational engagement that people experience well-being. Occupational injustice occurs when outside forces prevent people from engaging in occupation, require participation in activities that they find meaningless, or prevent people from making choices about their occupations. People with developmental disabilities in a day program are at risk for occupational injustice because they require environmental support in order to engage in …

The Emerging Field Of Travel Training Services: A Systems Perspective, Michael Wolf-Branigin, Karen Wolf-Branigin Sep 2008

The Emerging Field Of Travel Training Services: A Systems Perspective, Michael Wolf-Branigin, Karen Wolf-Branigin

Journal of Public Transportation

Travel training provides a promising approach for moving persons from paratransit to fixed-route transportation services. This study identifies current funding trends and discusses the volume and diversity of services within the travel training instruction field. Measuring the emergence of this field focused on four properties of systems: intention, boundary, resources, and exchange. We used these properties to facilitate sharing of information and learning among the participating organizations. Initial findings indicated that older, established programs tended to be larger and moved more persons to fixed routes, while programs that employed their own staff rather than contracting out staff produced more outputs …

Β-Funaltrexamine Inhibits Inducible Nitric-Oxide Synthase Expression In Human Astroglial Cells, Randall L. Davis, Daniel J. Buck, Neda Saffarian, Shekhar Mohan, Udaya Desilva, Samodha C. Fernando, Craig W. Stevens

Samodha C. Fernando Publications

The inducible isoform of nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) is involved in neuropathogenesis associated with infection and disease in the brain. Hence, there is considerable interest in the identification of therapeutic interventions to prevent iNOS-mediated pathology. Astroglia are a major site of iNOS expression during neuropathogenesis. To mimic a key component of neuroinflammation, human A172 astroglial cells were exposed in vitro to a cytokine mixture containing interferon γ, tumor necrosis factor α, and interleukin-1β, resulting in significant iNOS expression. Next, we assessed the effects of the mu opioid receptor antagonist, β-funaltrexamine (β-FNA), on cytokine induced iNOS expression in human astroglia. β-FNA dose-dependently …

The Potential Of Contract Document As Part Of Occupational Safety And Health Management System, K. Sulaiman, R. Sulaiman, H. Saleh, H.A. Hashim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Construction site is dangerous by its nature and are prone to accidents. Extensive efforts have previously been taken in order to minimise its risk. There was a major change in legislation and regulations to OSH with the introduction of Malaysian Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 by the government. However, it seems that the actions undertaken are still unsatisfactorily which statistic data shows little improvement in the number of accidents and fatalities. The construction activities need to be carried out in accordance to OSH best practice to avoid injuries and large significant financial loss. It is believed that these …

Universalism And The Law Of Sport: Muslim Women Negotiating Sports Leadership, M.W. Radzi Sep 2008

Universalism And The Law Of Sport: Muslim Women Negotiating Sports Leadership, M.W. Radzi

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Managing sport today is a serious business, and various rules of law as well as governance policies are being devised as such. Modern sport always insinuates the Modernity Agenda (Hargreaves 2001) while King (1995) suggests that the term 'modernity' have always been linked to the Enlightened 'West'. The West continued to exert global (economic) power long after the fall of the Empire through 'neo-liberalism' (Chong 2005). Few societies had resisted the transition to Modernity as fervently as the Muslim. Modern sport poses challenges to Muslim athletes, in that it conflicted with Muslim practices (Haji Omar 2000). Women issues on the …

Review Of Oral Oxymorphone In The Management Of Pain, Paul Sloan Sep 2008

Review Of Oral Oxymorphone In The Management Of Pain, Paul Sloan

Anesthesiology Faculty Publications

Chronic cancer and nonmalignant pain (CNMP) is a common and major health problem afflicting approximately 40 million persons in the US. Most cancer patients, and many patients with CNMP, require opioid analgesics to obtain adequate pain relief. Oral oxymorphone is a new formulation of an existing parenteral opioid that has become available for the treatment of significant pain: acute postoperative, chronic arthritis, chronic low back, and chronic cancer pain. Oxymorphone is a typical mu-opioid agonist that is effective in both immediate- and extended-release (IR and ER) formulations. Oxymorphone is more lipid soluble than morphine, resulting in a rapid onset of …

The Joint Role Of Locus Of Control And Perceived Financial Need In Job Search, Edwin A. J. Van Hooft, Craig Crossley Sep 2008

The Joint Role Of Locus Of Control And Perceived Financial Need In Job Search, Edwin A. J. Van Hooft, Craig Crossley

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Guided by economic rational choice theory and the behavioral-coping literature, the present study examined contrasting perspectives of the role of job-search locus of control (JSLOC) and perceived financial need in predicting job-search intensity. Data were collected in two independent studies in the Netherlands and in the United States, both using a two-wave longitudinal design. Results from both studies suggested that job seekers with external JSLOC and high perceived financial need engaged in more intense search behavior to compensate for anticipated difficulties in finding employment. Findings suggested that stress may mediate this relation, and may play a positive role in the …
