Acute Atomoxetine Treatment Of Younger And Older Children With Adhd: A Meta-Analysis Of Tolerability And Efficacy., Christopher J. Kratochvil, Denái R. Milton, Brigette S. Vaughan, Laurence L. Greenhill Sep 2008

Acute Atomoxetine Treatment Of Younger And Older Children With Adhd: A Meta-Analysis Of Tolerability And Efficacy., Christopher J. Kratochvil, Denái R. Milton, Brigette S. Vaughan, Laurence L. Greenhill

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

BACKGROUND: Atomoxetine is FDA-approved as a treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients aged 6 years to adult. Among pediatric clinical trials of atomoxetine to date, six with a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design were used in this meta-analysis. The purpose of this article is to describe and compare the treatment response and tolerability of atomoxetine between younger children (6-7 years) and older children (8-12 years) with ADHD, as reported in these six acute treatment trials.

METHODS: Data from six clinical trials of 6-9 weeks duration were pooled, yielding 280 subjects, ages 6-7 years, and 860 subjects, ages 8-12 years with …

Rotational Grazing Adoption In Cattle Production Under A Cost-Share Agreement: Does Uncertainty Have A Role In Conservation Technology Adoption?, Seon Ae Kim, Jeffrey M. Gillespie, Krishna P. Paudel Sep 2008

Rotational Grazing Adoption In Cattle Production Under A Cost-Share Agreement: Does Uncertainty Have A Role In Conservation Technology Adoption?, Seon Ae Kim, Jeffrey M. Gillespie, Krishna P. Paudel

Faculty Publications

Rotational grazing has been promoted as a best management practice with environmental benefits and associated higher revenue. Its adoption rate has been relatively low. This study investigates the role of uncertainty in the adoption of rotational grazing with a cost-share by cattle producers. Mail survey results indicate that 63-71 per cent of cattle producers are uncertain about adoption with a government cost-share. The study suggests that the possibility of uncertainty should be considered in cases where willingness-to-pay is elicited in the context of adoption of technology. © Journal compilation © 2008 Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society Inc. and Blackwell …

Off-Label Psychopharmacologic Prescribing For Children: History Supports Close Clinical Monitoring., Julie M. Zito, Albert T. Derivan, Christopher J. Kratochvil, Daniel J. Safer, Joerg M. Fegert, Laurence L. Greenhill

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

The review presents pediatric adverse drug events from a historical perspective and focuses on selected safety issues associated with off-label use of medications for the psychiatric treatment of youth. Clinical monitoring procedures for major psychotropic drug classes are reviewed. Prior studies suggest that systematic treatment monitoring is warranted so as to both minimize risk of unexpected adverse events and exposures to ineffective treatments. Clinical trials to establish the efficacy and safety of drugs currently being used off-label in the pediatric population are needed. In the meantime, clinicians should consider the existing evidence-base for these drugs and institute close clinical monitoring.

Aquatic Ecosystem Response To Storm Water Abatement Measures In The Ravines Of The Gvsu Allendale Campus: Establishment Of Base-Line Biological Condition, Eric Snyder, Jason Nelson, Jason Drogowski, Michelle Harju

Technical Reports

The ravine tributary streams surrounding Grand Valley State Universities Allendale campus represent unique and understudied ecosystems, worthy of significant restoration efforts and of long-lasting protection. They are variously affected by storm water runoff, representing a spectrum from severely impacted to relatively pristine. Quantitative macroinvertebrate samples taken from six streams in late June 2007, indicated that insect diversity was positively correlated to ammonium (p=0.057), while total abundance was negatively correlated to phosphate and chlorophyll-a concentration (n.s.). In addition, phosphate, nitrate, sulfate and iron concentrations were elevated in streams that experience significant storm-water runoff and these streams also tended to have …

Interneuron Subtypes Are Differentially Altered In Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Amanda George Sep 2008

Interneuron Subtypes Are Differentially Altered In Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Amanda George

Theses and Dissertations

The propensity for seizures in patients with epilepsy is due to underlying cortical hyperexcitability, the mechanisms of which are poorly understood. Particularly difficult to treat are patients with developmental malformations of cortex. Using the freeze-lesion rat model of one such malformation, polymicrogyria, we identified, in lesioned cortex, alterations in specific interneuron subpopulations that may promote hyperexcitability. Previous studies demonstrate increased excitatory input to the paramicrogyral region. An increase in the frequency of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) recorded from pyramidal cells has also been shown. We report an increase in sEPSCs recorded from one subtype of interneuron, the low threshold-spiking …
