Mentors’ Views About Developing Effective English Teaching Practices, Peter Hudson, Jan Millwater Oct 2008

Mentors’ Views About Developing Effective English Teaching Practices, Peter Hudson, Jan Millwater

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Effective mentoring in English is considered paramount to a preservice teacher’s development. What are mentors’ views about developing effective English teaching practices in their mentees? This study used quantitative data (survey) and qualitative data (questionnaire) on 24 mentors’ perceptions of mentoring second-year preservice teachers for teaching English and, in particular, the teaching of writing. Quantitative data measured mentors’ perceptions of their attributes and practices across five factors for mentoring (i.e., Personal Attributes, System Requirements, Pedagogical Knowledge, Modelling, and Feedback) with 67% or more of these mentors (n=24) agreeing or strongly agreeing they provided all of the advocated attributes and practices …

E-Learning Pedagogy In The Primary School Classroom: The Mcdonaldization Of Education, Matthew Etherington Oct 2008

E-Learning Pedagogy In The Primary School Classroom: The Mcdonaldization Of Education, Matthew Etherington

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper begins as an initial rejoinder to the ideas expressed by Ross (2000) in The Promise and Perils of E-Learning: A critical look at the new technology. In his article, Ross supports the traditional practices of pedagogy at the primary school level—face-to-face pedagogy— and then critiques what he describes as a ‘fetishisation’ of technological pedagogy—a fetishisation seen in the increase of E-learning pedagogy at the primary school level. The ideas expressed in this article gain their structure and momentum from Ross’s (2000) arguments against E-learning and extends a more cautious approach to the widespread belief in the success of …

A Survey Of Recent Illinois Ethics Law: Professionalism In Practice, Kate T. Hlava Oct 2008

A Survey Of Recent Illinois Ethics Law: Professionalism In Practice, Kate T. Hlava

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Professionalism should be a part of every Illinois lawyer’s daily practice. It is not enough to memorize the Rules of Professional Responsibility. Creating a legal practice that reflects one’s ethical duties and lives up the high degree of professionalism required by an attorney is a daily task and one that cannot be accomplished without effort. The rules can be unclear and ethical dilemmas can be ambiguous.

However, in many situations there are no excuses; the rules and case law make clear what is required. There are rules that every attorney should know and ethical duties that should always be implemented. …

Unleashing Electioneering: Analyzing The Court’S Decision In Federal Election Commission V. Wisconsin Right To Life, Inc., 127 S. Ct. 2652 (2007), Michelle D. Clark

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In the realm of political campaigns, money is speech. Millions of dollars are poured into federal campaigns and lobbying efforts aimed at political candidates every election year. For more than a century, since Congress first sought to regulate campaign financing, an uncomfortable tension has existed between freedom of political speech and curtailing corruption. Federal Election Commission v. Wisconsin Right to Life, Inc. (WRTL) marks the most recent swing in the campaign finance reform struggle. In WRTL, the Supreme Court found Section 203 of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA) unconstitutional as applied to three …

I Consented To Do What?: Posthumous Children And The Consent To Parent After-Death, Amanda Horner Oct 2008

I Consented To Do What?: Posthumous Children And The Consent To Parent After-Death, Amanda Horner

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This Comment advocates the implementation of a bright line test to establish paternity or maternity for children born posthumously. The Comment does not address whether posthumous children should inherit from intestate estates or receive social security benefits, but rather focuses on the current consent requirements nationwide and the revisions needed to help parents plan for the birth of their children long after their death.

Should Parties’ Disclosure Requirements For Arbitrators Be Honored By Courts: Positive Software Solutions, Inc. V. New Century Mortgage Corporation, Leonard E. Gross, Howard L. Wieder Oct 2008

Should Parties’ Disclosure Requirements For Arbitrators Be Honored By Courts: Positive Software Solutions, Inc. V. New Century Mortgage Corporation, Leonard E. Gross, Howard L. Wieder

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Courts should refuse to confirm arbitrators’ awards when arbitrators fail to comply with the terms of an arbitration agreement requiring them to disclose significant information about themselves. When Congress enacted the FAA, it made it clear that it wanted contracts to arbitrate enforced according to the parties’ agreement. The parties’ agreement includes the disclosure requirements to which the parties have negotiated themselves or to which they have agreed by electing to follow the procedures of an arbitration association such as the AAA. Parties to arbitration lack the protection that court litigants have from potentially biased judges. Consequently, there is a …

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams Oct 2008

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams

Masters Theses

Parents are continually looking for correct and effective ways to discipline and instruct their children. Often, parents will tell a personal narrative beginning with “when I was your age” to demonstrate to their children the appropriate way to think and behave. This thesis asks three research questions: What are the common themes in parental narratives that young adults remember in relation to instruction or discipline? How does the narrative structure demonstrate narrative coherence and fidelity? What do young adults self-report about the impact of the parental narrative on their cognitive dissonance? Through a content analysis of eighty completed surveys by …

Look Beyond And Rejoice : A Spiritual Intervention For Patients With Life-Threatening Illness Or Chronic Pain, Jung H. Park Oct 2008

Look Beyond And Rejoice : A Spiritual Intervention For Patients With Life-Threatening Illness Or Chronic Pain, Jung H. Park

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recently, the study of religious coping has increased dramatically. Researchers have recognized that cognitive-behavioral interventions imbued with spiritual dimensions may have greater impact when they incorporate a persons’ belief system. Based on scientific literature and Christian coping methods in the Bible, the Look Beyond & Rejoice [LB&R] Healing Model was developed to provide a theoretical framework for an intervention aimed at improving spiritual, mental, and physical health. The model includes: (a) positive reframing of illness that may change a patient’s perception from a threat to challenge and hope, and (b) daily transcendent visualization and verbalization, through looking beyond adversity and …

"Selling Sin" In A Hostile Environment: A Comparison Of Ukrainian And American Tobacco Advertising Strategies In Magazines, Olesya Venger, Joyce M. Wolburg Oct 2008

"Selling Sin" In A Hostile Environment: A Comparison Of Ukrainian And American Tobacco Advertising Strategies In Magazines, Olesya Venger, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Given that “sin” products must navigate different regulatory environments, it is important to compare cigarette advertising across cultures. Using text analysis, this study examined the message strategies and the ideological beliefs in cigarette advertising in American and Ukrainian magazines within the context of their different regulatory environments. The messages across the two countries differed in their use of creative appeals to ego, social needs, and sensory pleasure as well as their adherence to regulation. Many of the Ukrainian campaigns were reminiscent of earlier American campaigns and offer unique comparisons of cultures that are at different places historically, economically, and ideologically.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to characterize the inflammatory infiltrate in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm in patients with Marfan syndrome, familial thoracic aortic aneurysm, or nonfamilial thoracic aortic aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic aortic aneurysms are associated with a pathologic lesion termed "medial degeneration," which is described as a noninflammatory lesion. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are a complication of Marfan syndrome and can be inherited in an autosomal dominant manner of familial thoracic aortic aneurysm.

METHODS: Full aortic segments were collected from patients undergoing elective repair with Marfan syndrome (n = 5), familial thoracic aortic aneurysm (n = 6), and thoracic aortic aneurysms (n …

Enhancement Of Unusual Color In Aerial Video Sequences For Assisting Wilderness Search And Rescue, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan D. Rasmussen, Daniel Thornton Oct 2008

Enhancement Of Unusual Color In Aerial Video Sequences For Assisting Wilderness Search And Rescue, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan D. Rasmussen, Daniel Thornton

Faculty Publications

The use of aerial video for search and surveillance has been popularized by the increased use of camera-equipped unmanned aerial vehicles. For many search applications, objects may also be missed by observers due to their small size, brief visibility, or the inherent monotony of the scene. This paper presents a novel method for automatically emphasizing unusually colored objects to improve their detectability. We use a hue histogram and a local saliency measure to find unusually colored objects, then boost the saturation of these objects while desaturating more common colors, thus drawing the observer’s attention and facilitating video search.

BACKGROUND: Whole-body hypothermia reduced the frequency of death or moderate/severe disabilities in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in a randomized, controlled multicenter trial.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate outcomes of safety and effectiveness of hypothermia in infants up to 18 to 22 months of age.

DESIGN/METHODS: A priori outcomes were evaluated between hypothermia (n = 102) and control (n = 106) groups.

RESULTS: Encephalopathy attributable to causes other than hypoxia-ischemia at birth was not noted. Inotropic support (hypothermia, 59% of infants; control, 56% of infants) was similar during the 72-hour study intervention period in both groups. Need for blood transfusions …

Are You Still My Mother, Interstate Recognition Of Adoption By Gays And Lesbians , Rhonda Wasserman Oct 2008

Are You Still My Mother, Interstate Recognition Of Adoption By Gays And Lesbians , Rhonda Wasserman

American University Law Review

Parents and their biological children routinely cross state borders safe in the assumption that the parent-child relationship will be recognized wherever they go. The central issue raised in this Article is whether the law guarantees parents and their adopted children the same security if the parents are gay. This question is part of a broader debate about the obligation of states to recognize changes in family status effected under the laws of other states, such as same-sex marriages and migratory divorces. The debate is divisive because it pits the family against the state; one state against another; and the needs …

Breaking The Silence Surrounding Hepatitis C By Promoting Self-Efficacy: A Study Of Hepatitis C Public Service Announcements, Jean M. Grow, Stephanie A. Christopher Oct 2008

Breaking The Silence Surrounding Hepatitis C By Promoting Self-Efficacy: A Study Of Hepatitis C Public Service Announcements, Jean M. Grow, Stephanie A. Christopher

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Hepatitis C (HCV) is the most common chronic blood borne virus in the United States. Despite this fact, there is a startling lack of awareness about HCV among individuals who may have contracted the virus. This study, grounded in self-efficacy theory, analyzes public service announcements (PSAs) for HCV. Using focus groups to contextualize the responses of individuals living with HCV, the authors conclude that stigma and structural barriers pose the greatest challenges for health communicators trying to reach at-risk populations. The findings suggest that expanded use of celebrity appeals, realistic drug portrayals, more extensive use of social networking in tandem …

Familial Chylomicronemia In A Nine Months Old Infant, Saira Waqar Lone, Aamer Imdad, Abdul Gaffar Billoo Oct 2008

Familial Chylomicronemia In A Nine Months Old Infant, Saira Waqar Lone, Aamer Imdad, Abdul Gaffar Billoo

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Familial chylomicronemia syndrome is a rare disorder of lipoprotein metabolism due to familial lipoprotein lipase or apolipoprotein C-II deficiency or the presence of inhibitors to lipoprotein lipase. It manifests as eruptive xanthomas, acute pancreatitis, and lipaemic plasma due to marked elevation of triglyceride and chylomicrons levels. We report a rare case of familial chylomicronemia in a 9-month-old infant, who was diagnosed after his plasma was incidentally found to be milky. Lipid profile showed familial chylomicronemia (Type 1 Hyperlipidemia). The infant was started on a low fat diet and advised a regular follow-up.
