Sepsis And Septic Shock. A Global Perspective And Initiative, Niranjan Kissoon Oct 2008

Sepsis And Septic Shock. A Global Perspective And Initiative, Niranjan Kissoon

Saudi Medical Journal

Sepsis and septic shock are major contributors to mortality in children worldwide. While many factors may contribute to poor outcomes, resource limitations play a role in developing countries. However, early recognition and aggressive therapy using simple measures can reverse shock in most children. Indeed, great gains have been realized in some areas with limited resources. In this manuscript, the significant gains over the last few years are outlined, and issues to consider in resource limited environments are discussed. In addition, an invitation is extended to participate in a global sepsis initiative.

Historic And Recent Distributions Of Elk In Nebraska, Kent A. Fricke, Michael A. Cover, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Hugh H. Genoways, Scott R. Groepper, Kit Hams, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Elk (Cervus elaphus) were historically found throughout North America but were extirpated from Nebraska and much of the Great Plains in the 1880s due to consumptive uses by settlers, miners, market hunters, and others. Elk began to reappear in Nebraska in the 1950s and 1960s, and established a stable, nonmigratory population that currently consists of seven herds and an estimated 1,400 individuals throughout western and central Nebraska. The reappearance and subsequent persistence of elk in Nebraska suggests there is adequate habitat to support a self-sustaining population. The general movement of elk eastward may lead to an eventual statewide …

The Visual Analysis Of Heterogeneous Sex Role Interactions: A Content Analysis Of Popular Music Videos, Deanna Niccole Kimbrel

Theses

Hip Hop cultured music videos have raised concern among our nation’s leaders, parents and communities. Since the introduction of music videos in the early 1980s the medium has crossed cultural, regional and ethnic boundaries (Rose, 1994). This medium has been well researched since the 1980s. The focus of this study is Hip Hop cultured music videos from years 1989-2006. The uniqueness of this study is that it focuses on nonverbal sex role interactions in this genre of music videos. This study found many useful trends. For example, men were portrayed as more dominant and/or vertical than women in the sampled …

Lessons In Access To Justice: Racialized Youths In Ontario's Safe Schools, Janet E. Mosher Oct 2008

Lessons In Access To Justice: Racialized Youths In Ontario's Safe Schools, Janet E. Mosher

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Access to justice is often equated with access to institutionalized dispute resolution processes, and the objective barriers that hinder such access-costs and delay most particularly-are commonly identified as the primary objects of reform efforts. In sharp contrast, when interviews and focus groups were conducted with racialized youths in Toronto regarding their experiences of access to justice in the context of school disciplinary matters, accounts of access to dispute resolution processes being impeded by costs and delay did not figure prominently. The interviews and focus groups revealed that many racialized youths scarcely ever considered accessing institutionalized dispute resolution processes largely because …

Leveraging News And Advertising To Introduce New Brands On The Web, Anca C. Micu, Esther Thorson Oct 2008

Leveraging News And Advertising To Introduce New Brands On The Web, Anca C. Micu, Esther Thorson

WCBT Faculty Publications

Previous studies using the integrated marketing communications framework have examined the increased effectiveness of combining either multiple media or different tactics when promoting a brand. This study considers integrating advertising and publicity to promote an unknown brand on the Internet. Experiment results indicate that when exposure to advertising combines with exposure to objective news about a new brand, effectiveness increases in terms of both brand attitudes and behavioral intentions. For sequencing exposures for technical brands, the news-then-advertising condition offers more effectiveness than the reverse sequence. When introducing non-technical brands on the Web though, using advertising first is more effective in …

International Coffee Regulation: A Comparison Of The International Coffee Organization And The Fair Trade Coffee Regimes, Scott B. Weese Oct 2008

International Coffee Regulation: A Comparison Of The International Coffee Organization And The Fair Trade Coffee Regimes, Scott B. Weese

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note examines the challenges in coffee farming due to oversupply and evaluates two regulatory attempts: the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and the Fairtrade Labelling Organization (FLO). While the ICO focuses on sustainability and the FLO on creating demand, both fail to address the root issue of overproduction. The note argues that these efforts are insufficient because they do not reduce supply, suggesting that market correction through producer exit is necessary.

Does Place Explain Racial Health Disparities? Quantifying The Contribution Of Residential Context To The Black/White Health Gap In The United States, Brian K. Finch, D. Phuong Do, Ricardo Basurto-Davila, Chloe E. Bird, José J. Escarce, Nicole Lurie Oct 2008

Does Place Explain Racial Health Disparities? Quantifying The Contribution Of Residential Context To The Black/White Health Gap In The United States, Brian K. Finch, D. Phuong Do, Ricardo Basurto-Davila, Chloe E. Bird, José J. Escarce, Nicole Lurie

Faculty Publications

The persistence of the black health disadvantage has been a puzzling component of health in the United States in spite of general declines in rates of morbidity and mortality over the past century. Studies that have focused on well-established individual-level determinants of health such as socio-economic status and health behaviors have been unable to fully explain these disparities. Recent research has begun to focus on other factors such as racism, discrimination, and segregation. Variation in neighborhood context - socio-demographic composition, social aspects, and built environment - has been postulated as an additional explanation for racial disparities, but few attempts have …

Breast cancer affects thousands each year in the United States, and disproportionately affects certain subgroups. For example, the incidence of breast cancer in South Carolina is lower in African American compared with European American women by ~12% to 15%, but their mortality rate is twice as high as in European American women. The purpose of the study was to assess factors associated with breast cancer mortality between African American and European American women. Participants (n = 314) in South Carolina's Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (SCBCCEDP), which provides breast cancer screening and treatment services, during the years …

Why America Still Needs Affirmative Action, Jonathan K. Stubbs Oct 2008

Why America Still Needs Affirmative Action, Jonathan K. Stubbs

Law Faculty Publications

Affirmative action has gotten a bad rap. Many people think of affirmative action as race-based policies that favor unqualified persons because of the color of their skin. Resentments and misunderstandings flow from such perceptions in part because race remains America’s most inflammatory unfinished business.

To ignite a spirited, thoughtful discussion as well as practical action regarding affirmative action, this article briefly discusses what constitutes affirmative action; evaluates why affirmative action programs that consider race, gender, and class remain necessary; and offers some thoughts regarding when affirmative action should end.
