It examined the relationship between the five most …

Synthesis And Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Carbohydrate And Polyhydroxylated Non-Carbohydrate Fatty Acid Ester And Ether Derivatives, Aoife Smith, Patricia Nobmann, Gary Henehan, Paula Bourke, Julie Dunne Oct 2008

Synthesis And Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Carbohydrate And Polyhydroxylated Non-Carbohydrate Fatty Acid Ester And Ether Derivatives, Aoife Smith, Patricia Nobmann, Gary Henehan, Paula Bourke, Julie Dunne

Articles

A series of fatty acid ester and ether derivatives have been chemically synthesised based on carbohydrate and non-carbohydrate polyhydroxylated scaffolds. The synthesised compounds, along with their corresponding fatty acid monoglyceride antimicrobials, were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Of the derivatives synthesised several of the carbohydrate based compounds have antimicrobial efficacy comparable with commercially available antimicrobials. The results suggest that the nature of the carbohydrate core plays a role in the efficacy of carbohydrate fatty acid derivatives as antimicrobials.

Many adults may not realize the many benefits of carpooling to/from work. Decision makers at many organizations may also not encourage employees to carpool because they do not realize the benefits of carpooling. Decision makers may not realize that by having employees …

Problem-Based Educational Games: Connections, Prescriptions, And Assessment, Andrew Walker, Brett E. Shelton

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The overwhelming success of the commercial game market has brought increased attention to emerging work in educational game design. Despite apparent similarities between the two fields, there has been no formal effort to explore the connections between them. This conceptual paper examines the basic tenants of PBL with an eye toward making prescriptive recommendations for the design and use of problem-based educational games. Examples within existing educational games are …

Tobacco Control And The Role Of Litigation: A Survey Of Issues In Law, Policy, And Economics, Basil C. Bitas, Pedro P. Barros Oct 2008

Tobacco Control And The Role Of Litigation: A Survey Of Issues In Law, Policy, And Economics, Basil C. Bitas, Pedro P. Barros

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

This article examines the course of tobacco litigation in the United States and its implications for law and policy on both the national and international levels. In our view, the disparate legal traditions and attitudes of countries outside the United States will lead the majority of such states to opt for the direct and transparent regulation of tobacco activities through formal and perhaps consensual channels. This will likely promote effective tobacco control without the policy mix encompassing a period of prolonged litigation buttressed by settlement and regulation, which has characterized the U.S. process. Therefore, despite some increased litigation in the …

This article will examine recent laptop computer search cases in light of the border search doctrine and will consider the implications for lawyers and business professionals who travel abroad with confidential information on laptops and other electronic-storage devices. The article will also consider the implications of such …

Hemoptysis. A Rare Presentation Of A Vallecular Cyst, Saad A. Alsaleh, Ahmed Y. Al-Ammar

Saudi Medical Journal

Hemoptysis is a frightening experience for both patient and clinician and warrants prompt evaluation and diagnosis. We report a case of a vallecular cyst (VC) in a 30-year-old gentleman presenting with hemoptysis. Carbon dioxide laser dissection of the VC after needle decompression was carried out with no complications or recurrence in a 2 months follow-up. In such rare lesions, the authors tend to have conflicting opinions in their classification, evaluation, and management. In this report, these opinions are reviewed and discussed.

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was launched in 2000. To understand why some national programs have been more successful than others, a panel of individuals with expertise in LF elimination efforts met to assess available data from programs in 8 countries. The goal was to identify: 1) the factors determining success for national LF elimination programs (defined as the rapid, sustained reduction in microfilaremia/ antigenemia after repeated mass drug administration [MDA]); 2) the priorities for operational research to enhance LF elimination efforts.

Of more than 40 factors identified, the most prominent were 1) initial level of LF …
