Bridging The Divide: Connecting Feminist Histories And Activism In The Classroom, Holly Blake, Melissa Ooten Oct 2008

Bridging The Divide: Connecting Feminist Histories And Activism In The Classroom, Holly Blake, Melissa Ooten

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

Learning about the historical traditions of social change movements is critical for today’s students. Students need social justice role models to understand what has changed as a result of people’s organized and individual efforts over time. Students need to learn from the successes and challenges of past movements in order to know that change is not only possible but that they, too, can be change agents. When exposed to the depth and breadth of activist histories – histories of which they usually have little to no knowledge of – students start to think more critically about their own education. They …

Toll-Like Receptor 2 Recognition Of The Microsporidia Encephalitozoon Spp. Induces Nuclear Translocation Of Nf-Κb And Subsequent Inflammatory Responses, Jeffrey Fischer, Colby Suire, Hollie Hale-Donze Oct 2008

Toll-Like Receptor 2 Recognition Of The Microsporidia Encephalitozoon Spp. Induces Nuclear Translocation Of Nf-Κb And Subsequent Inflammatory Responses, Jeffrey Fischer, Colby Suire, Hollie Hale-Donze

Faculty Publications

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that are ubiquitous in nature and have been recognized as causing an important emerging disease among immunocompromised individuals. Limited knowledge exists about the immune response against these organisms, and virtually nothing is known about the receptors involved in host recognition. Toll-like receptors (TLR) are pattern recognition receptors that bind to specific molecules found on pathogens and signal a variety of inflammatory responses. In this study, we show that both Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis are preferentially recognized by TLR2 and not by TLR4 in primary human macrophages. This is the first demonstration of host receptor …

Effect Of A Water Treatment Bmp On Nutrient Spiraling And Leaf Litter Breakdown In An Urban Stream, Megan Leclair Wheeler Oct 2008

Effect Of A Water Treatment Bmp On Nutrient Spiraling And Leaf Litter Breakdown In An Urban Stream, Megan Leclair Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

Alterations to stream conditions caused by urbanization can compromise valuable ecosystem services, such as nutrient attenuation and carbon processing. A best management practice (BMP) water facility was installed to restore an impaired urban stream in Columbus, GA. This study was conducted to determine the effect of this BMP on nutrient spiraling and leaf litter decomposition in a 2 km stretch of Weracoba Creek. I hypothesized the BMP would (1) reduce leaf mass loss over time and (2) interfere with nutrient concentrations and uptake lengths. I characterized leaf litter decomposition using tulip tree leaves {Liriodendron tulipifera) in 1mm mesh bags deployed …

The Reliability And Validity Of The Elderly Mobility Scale In The Acute Hospital Setting, Joanne Stacey Nolan, Lucinda Elaine Remilton, Margaret Mary Green Oct 2008

The Reliability And Validity Of The Elderly Mobility Scale In The Acute Hospital Setting, Joanne Stacey Nolan, Lucinda Elaine Remilton, Margaret Mary Green

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS) in an acute hospital setting. Intra-rater (n=15) and inter-rater (n=18) reliability were investigated using physiotherapists who viewed and scored video-recorded mobility assessments using the EMS on two occasions, one week apart. Latent class analysis of EMS scores showed that neither the occasion of testing (intra-rater reliability) (R2=0.0035, p=0.72), therapist (inter-rater reliability (R2=0.0051, p=1.00), years of experience (R2=0.0058, p=1.00) nor number of EMS assessments previously completed (R2=0.0048, p=1.00) had any impact on the EMS scores. The only factor which impacted on clustering was the EMS score (R2=0.8263, …

Ethical Considerations In Drafting And Enforcing Consumer Arbitration Clauses, Amy J. Schmitz Oct 2008

Ethical Considerations In Drafting And Enforcing Consumer Arbitration Clauses, Amy J. Schmitz

Faculty Publications

Attorneys face mixed messages regarding consumer arbitration: Mixed professional responsibility rules; mixed legal enforcement; mixed messages from commentators and policymakers; mixed evidence regarding efficiency, cost-savings and fairness. It is therefore doubtful that attorneys would face discipline for drafting or enforcing onerous consumer arbitration provisions they believe in good faith to be lawful. Professional discipline rules, however, merely set the floor for ethical conduct and can only go so far in dictating morals or teaching values. Indeed, an attorney's commitment to ethics and public service "must begin at home." Moreover, the bottom line is: "If you have the wrong values, your …

"No Cherries Grow On Our Trees": A Social Policy Research Paper For The Take Action Project, A Public Policy Initiative To Address Women’S Poverty And Violence Against Women, Wendy Komiotis, Nora Currie, Janet Mosher

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

This is a project about women, not as a homogeneous and objectified category, but about women as agents whose lives are shaped by the multiple dimensions of their identities, including their Aboriginal status, age, class, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and status (be it family, immigration, or health). It is a project that speaks to the realities of women’s lives, in particular the harsh realities of poverty and violence. It is also a project about you. Given the high rates of both poverty and violence, many of you will share these experiences. Many of you may be one job, …

Hope For Homeowners: Too Little, Too Late, Carole O. Heyward Oct 2008

Hope For Homeowners: Too Little, Too Late, Carole O. Heyward

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Heyward argues that the HOPE for Homeowners Act of 2008 is too little, too late for the many homeowners who faced foreclosure in 2007 and the three million homeowners who are predicted to default. Given the significant barriers to success, it is unlikely that the program will prevent a significant number of foreclosures or that it will stabilize the mortgage market. Providing help to 400,000 homeowners is simply not enough, given the magnitude of the problem. The housing market is plagued by 12 million homeowners who owe more than their homes are worth. The problem is compounded by the record …

Do Multiple Stroke-Related Educational Opportunities Enhance Stroke Knowledge Among Students Enrolled In Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs?, Kristen S. Lankford, E. Lauren Marshall, Amanda D. Pittman, Charles Ellis

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Stroke education modules have been added to medical school curriculums to improve stroke knowledge in graduate physicians, and this has resulted in positive outcomes. These findings suggest that similar strategies may be successful in graduate programs such as Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of multiple stroke-related education opportunities on students enrolled in CSD programs. Methods: Seventy-six first and second year students enrolled in a Communication Sciences and Disorders program completed a survey of stroke risk factors and early warning signs of stroke. Results: Risk factor knowledge - 97% identified …

Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish Oct 2008

Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Methadone is commonly used for the treatment of pregnant opiate-addicts. But, it can have severe effects on the neonate including Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, increased length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, and intrauterine growth retardation. Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome includes neurological excitability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and autonomic signs. Because of these adverse effects, studies have been conducted to determine what can help reduce the severe complications caused by methadone. Varied dosages of methadone and alternative medications, such as buprenorphine, slow-release morphine, and others have been studied. Most of the alternative medications, especially buprenorphine, are gaining popularity in Europe where there …

The Evolution Of Decision And Experienced Utilities, Arthur Robson, Larry Samuelson Oct 2008

The Evolution Of Decision And Experienced Utilities, Arthur Robson, Larry Samuelson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Psychologists report that people make choices on the basis of “decision utilities” that routinely overestimate the “experienced utility” consequences of these choices. This paper argues that this dichotomy between decision and experienced utilities may be the solution to an evolutionary design problem. We examine a setting in which evolution designs agents with utility functions that must mediate intertemporal choices, and in which there is an incentive to condition current utilities on the agent’s previous experience. Anticipating future utility adjustments can distort intertemporal incentives, a conflict that is attenuated by separating decision and experienced utilities.

Rapid Comparison Of Properties On Protein Surface, Lee Sael, David La, Bin Li, Raif Rustamov, Daisuke Kihara Oct 2008

Rapid Comparison Of Properties On Protein Surface, Lee Sael, David La, Bin Li, Raif Rustamov, Daisuke Kihara

Faculty Publications

The mapping of physicochemical characteristics onto the surface of a protein provides crucial insights into its function and evolution. This information can be further used in the characterization and identification of similarities within protein surface regions. We propose a novel method which quantitatively compares global and local properties on the protein surface. We have tested the method on comparison of electrostatic potentials and hydrophobicity. The method is based on 3D Zernike descriptors, which provides a compact representation of a given property defined on a protein surface. Compactness and rotational invariance of this descriptor enable fast comparison suitable for database searches. …
