The Real Price Of Atlantic Salmon, Courtney Henson Oct 2008

The Real Price Of Atlantic Salmon, Courtney Henson

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Salmon aquaculture has developed commercially in countries with natural salmon populations since the 1970s. Aquaculture is the farming of fish under controlled conditions in natural water bodies or in closed systems. Fundación Chile, a nonprofit organization associated with the government whose goal is to foster Chilean business and industrial growth, introduced salmon aquaculture to Chile in the 1980s. The industry has boomed and Chile has become the world’s second largest salmon-producing country. Chilean salmon and trout exports have increased about 500% in the past decade. The expansion of commercial salmon aquaculture has resulted in the cost of salmon to consumers …

Rising Global Food Prices: The Need For Re-Regulating Commodity Futures, Megan S. Chapman Oct 2008

Rising Global Food Prices: The Need For Re-Regulating Commodity Futures, Megan S. Chapman

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The sharp rise in the price of basic foodstuffs in the last year has impacted consumers around the globe, but the ill effects are disproportionately felt in developing countries. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (“FAO”) reports seventy-five million more people living below the hunger line in 2007, raising the number of undernourished to 923 million worldwide; these numbers are likely to increase even more sharply in 2008. Food prices for staples such as flour, corn, and rice have risen fifty-two percent on average from 2007 to 2008. In developing countries, where families may spend as much as fifty to …

The Cradle Of The Deltaf508 Mutation, Danish Saleheen, Philippe M Frossard Oct 2008

The Cradle Of The Deltaf508 Mutation, Danish Saleheen, Philippe M Frossard

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder caused due to mutation/s in the CFTR gene. The most common mutation in CFTR worldwide is deltaF508 and cystic fibrosis genetic analysis consortium revealed that this mutation is responsible for approximately 66% of all CF chromosomes in the world. Studies looking at the DNA polymorphic haplotypes created by CF linked markers suggest that deltaF508 has a single origin as this mutation has been found associated exclusively with one marker haplotype. Despite a high prevalence of this mutation in CF patients in northern parts of Europe, findings suggest that this mutation …

Hepatitis B Virus Interacts With Albumin Precursor In Vivo, Saeeda Baig, Anwar Ali Siddiqui, Shamim Mushtaq, Jawed Shafqat Oct 2008

Hepatitis B Virus Interacts With Albumin Precursor In Vivo, Saeeda Baig, Anwar Ali Siddiqui, Shamim Mushtaq, Jawed Shafqat

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

A range of proteins has been recognized as mediators/hypothetical receptors for hepatitis B virus (HBV), but the results are conflicting and inconclusive especially regarding their biological significance. This study was aimed at identifying a novel HBV-interacting protein which would provide a better understanding of its transport in blood, attachment, fusion and entry into hepatocytes. Serum samples positive for HBV confirmed by PCR were subjected to ammonium sulfate fractionations at 50, 75, 100%, saturation. PCR of each fraction demonstrated amplification of HBV in 100% fraction. Protein analysis by SDS PAGE of fractions showed one band of approximately 69 kDa protein, in …

Folk Lore Uses Of Some Plants By The Tribes Of Madhya Pradesh With Special Reference To Their Conservation, Sumeet Dwivedi, Abhishek Dwivedi, S. N. Dwivedi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Madhya Pradesh sustains a very rich traditional medicinal plant wealth and inherits unique plant and animal communities. Due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and indiscriminate exploitation of wild and natural resources, many valuable herbs like Abrus precatorious, Bauhinia variegta, Mucuna prurita, etc., are at the verge of extinction. The present paper enumerates status, conservation strategies and traditional uses of 80 plant species by the tribes of Madhya Pradesh. The claims were gathered by interviewing tribes of the study area. Attempts were made to verify the efficacy of claims with actual beneficiaries, although this was not possible in all cases …

Preliminary Phytochemical Analysis Of Diospyros Species, Muthiah Maridass, S. Ghanthikumar, G. Raju

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Diospyros species are valuable traditional medicines of Chinese herbal medicine, Tibetan medicine, and Ayurvedic medicine. Extractive values and qualitative identification of phytochemicals constituents of 29 Diospyros species was carried out. The methanolic fruit extract yielded maximum percentage of Diospyros malabarica (5.61%), and minimum percentage of Diospyros foliosa (1.25%). Fruits of Diospyros species showed the presence of bioactive constituents of alkaloids (82%), flavonoids (68.97%), tannin (55.17%), terpenoids (100%), and essential oils (100%) were detected in 29 Diospyros species.

Embracing Unconscionability’S Safety Net Function, Amy J. Schmitz Oct 2008

Embracing Unconscionability’S Safety Net Function, Amy J. Schmitz

Faculty Publications

Despite courts' and commentators' denial of morality and focus on efficiency in contract law, fairness and flexibility have remained the bedrocks of the unconscionability doctrine. This Article therefore departs from the popular formalist critiques of unconscionability that urge for the doctrine's demise or constraint based on claims that its flexibility and lack of clear definition threaten efficiency in contract law. Contrary to this formalist trend, this Article proposes that unconscionability is necessarily flexible and contextual in order to serve its historical and philosophical function of protecting core human values. Unconscionability is not frivolous gloss on classical contract law. Instead, it …

The Patent Lottery: Exploiting Behavioral Economics For The Common Good, Dennis D. Crouch Oct 2008

The Patent Lottery: Exploiting Behavioral Economics For The Common Good, Dennis D. Crouch

Faculty Publications

Lotteries are immensely popular. Players are willing to give the organizer a large monetary cut of every ticket purchase in return for a chance at a jackpot. In some ways, our current patent system operates as a lottery as well. Most patents are relatively worthless, while a few are highly valuable. Reaching the major payout of a highly valuable patent takes perseverance in the face of tremendous uncertainty. Like lottery players, small entrepreneurial companies and individuals have shows signs of bounded rationality. In particular, what I call the patent lottery effect is associated with the phenomena of potential innovators overweighting …

Carcinogenicity Of Hexavalent Chromium, Amie L. Holmes, S. S. Wise, John P. Wise Sr.

Applied Medical Sciences [Discontinued]

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a commonly used industrial metal, is a well known human lung carcinogen. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that the particulate Cr(VI) compounds, specifically the water insoluble compounds, are the more potent carcinogens, however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains unknown. Here we summarize recent Cr(VI)-induced human tumour, in vivo, cell culture and in vitro studies and put the data into context with three major paradigms of carcinogenesis: multistage carcinogenesis, genomic instability, and epigenetic modifications. Based on these studies, we propose a mechanism for chromate carcinogenesis that is primarily driven by the genomic instability paradigm.

Analysis And Lessons Learned Instituting An Instant Messaging Reference Service At An Academic Health Sciences Library: The First Year, Daniel G. Kipnis

The Selected Works of Dan Kipnis

In February 2006, Thomas Jefferson University went live with a new instant messaging (IM) service. This paper reviews the first 102 transcripts to examine question types and usage patterns. In addition, the paper highlights lessons learned in instituting the service. IM reference represents a small proportion of reference questions, but based on user feedback and technological improvements, the library has decided to continue the service.

A Proposal For Creating A Master Of Divinity Specialization In Stewardship And An Ma In Stewardship And Development Program, John R. Frank Oct 2008

A Proposal For Creating A Master Of Divinity Specialization In Stewardship And An Ma In Stewardship And Development Program, John R. Frank

Doctor of Ministry

Critics and research indicate that inadequate leadership in stewardship education has led to inaccurate teaching, wrong attitudes, and a lack of generosity in the Christian church and parachurch ministries. This teaching has led tnany churches and parachurch organizations to etnphasize fundraising rather than the steward's spiritual journey and relationship with God. The dissertation addresses the need for a new look at stewardship, the theology of stewardship, and how stewardship is presented to the local church and parachurch.

The thesis of this project is that in order to itnprove stewardship in the Christian church, leadership must teach cotnprehensive, biblical stewardship with …

The Political Economy Of Criminal Law And Procedure: The Pessimists' View, Richard H. Mcadams Oct 2008

The Political Economy Of Criminal Law And Procedure: The Pessimists' View, Richard H. Mcadams

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

In The Pathological Politics of Criminal Law, Bill Stuntz provides a powerful critique of the modern American criminal justice system. Other commentators have criticized legislatures for constantly adding to an already overbroad set of criminal prohibitions. Stuntz explains the political dynamic that makes this outcome inevitable. The ultimate result is that the modern prosecutor defines what is criminal by her selection of cases to charge, while criminal legislation is a mere “side-show.” Stuntz concludes that this state of affairs is “lawless” and pathological. As a solution, he proposes that courts resurrect or expand certain constitutional doctrines to reclaim some of …

Patient-Tailored Medicine, Part One: The Impact Of Race And Genetics On Medicine, Corrine Parver Oct 2008

Patient-Tailored Medicine, Part One: The Impact Of Race And Genetics On Medicine, Corrine Parver

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

One of the more controversial elements of advancing technology is the use of race and genetics to help create more specific types of medicines that will help combat diseases and conditions that appear to be more prevalent within certain races or ethnic groups than in others. Considering the history of discrimination and inadequate treatment of individuals on the bases of race and gender in the United States, there is justifiable concern that race or gender-based treatment could be used to legitimate discrimination. On the other hand, there is substantial proof that the current method of creating medicines for the general …

A Multidisciplinary Concept Analysis Of Empowerment : Implications For Nursing., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Linda Holbrook Freeman

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

According to the Institute of Medicine, nursing has failed to effectively shape the health care system and to advocate successfully for patients. Empowerment may be a potent tool to fulfill these responsibilities, yet nurses have not benefited from considering application of the concept to the continuum of health care advocacy in their communities, in their relationships with clients, and in their professional roles within health care organizations. This paper uses concept analysis to examine the attributes, characteristics, and uses of empowerment within diverse disciplines to clarify its meaning and explore its potential application to nursing's challenges that cross settings, disciplines, …

Supportive Housing: Implications For Its Efficacy As Intervention With Special Needs Low-Income African Americans, Carol S. Collard, Rufus Larkin Oct 2008

Supportive Housing: Implications For Its Efficacy As Intervention With Special Needs Low-Income African Americans, Carol S. Collard, Rufus Larkin

Faculty Articles

In this pilot study, the authors examine the efficacy of supportive housing, which combines affordable housing with social services, in helping low-income single mothers in substance abuse recovery with relapse prevention and acquiring life skills to improve their economic conditions. Study subjects were residents of Delowe Village Apartments, a supportive housing development in East Point, Georgia, who participated in Project GROW, an on-site program intended to help residents maintain sobriety and reduce their dependence on welfare. The authors hypothesize that the length of residency in supportive housing correlates to prolonged sobriety, improved functioning, and increased employment. Findings indicate a substantial …
