Evaluating River Restoration Success Using The California Rapid Assessment Method, Cara Clark Oct 2008

Evaluating River Restoration Success Using The California Rapid Assessment Method, Cara Clark

SNS Master's Theses

Although there has been significant expenditure on stream restoration, no unified monitoring and assessment strategy for these projects exists. This study evaluates California's success at improving stream condition by assessing state-sponsored restoration projects and comparing them to high quality reference sites using the California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM). CRAM evaluates stream condition using universal attributes that are each evaluated with specific metrics. Restoration sites were randomly selected from a database of restoration projects in California Regional Water Quality Control Board Region 3, the Central Coast. Reference sites were chosen to characterize the best attainable condition in the region. CRAM scores …

Cures Like A Charm: Acupuncture And Its Integration Into Modern Medicine, Ivana Miljic Oct 2008

Cures Like A Charm: Acupuncture And Its Integration Into Modern Medicine, Ivana Miljic

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. As part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture aims to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body. In the United States, where practitioners incorporate healing traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries, acupuncture is considered part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This paper discusses Acupuncture and how the modern medical field has integrated it into its field. This paper also argues that Acupuncture has risen above all other alternative medicines because of its incredible healing ability, minimum side effects, and cost-effectiveness.

"Say That To The Anorexic Girl": Eating Disorders And America’S Next Top Model, Stephanie Mccarthy Oct 2008

"Say That To The Anorexic Girl": Eating Disorders And America’S Next Top Model, Stephanie Mccarthy

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Today, reality television stars often become heroes to children. One such hero type is young women with ideal but unrealistic thin bodies that the show America’s Next Top Model for instance exalts. But stick-thin women should be one of the last types of heroes our society should encourage our children glorifying. My presentation will demonstrate how this show sends a contradictory message about the female body: it idealizes thin female bodies while ostensibly advocating good health and high self-esteem as well as giving warning about the dangers of eating disorders. I argue that the show’s hypocritical promotion of the internalization …

Florida Red Tide And Brevetoxins: Association And Exposure In Live Resident Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncates) In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, U.S.A., Spencer Fire, Leanne Flewelling, Zhihong Wang, Jerome Naar, Michael Henry, Richard Pierce, Randall Wells

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) along the Gulf of Mexico are frequently exposed to blooms of the toxic alga, Karenia brevis, and brevetoxins associated with these blooms have been implicated in several dolphin mortality events. Studies on brevetoxin accumulation in dolphins have typically focused on analyses of carcasses from large-scale die-offs; however, data are scarce for brevetoxin loads in live individuals frequently exposed to K. brevis blooms. This study investigated in vivo brevetoxin exposure in free-ranging bottlenose dolphins resident to Sarasota Bay, Florida, utilizing samples collected during health assessments performed during multiple K. brevis blooms occurring from 2003 …

Fisheries Research Report No. 181 - Developing Long-Term Indicators For The Sub-Tidal Embayment Communities Of Cockburn Sound, Danielle Johnston, C. Wakefield, A Sampey, J Fromont, D C. Harris

Fisheries Research Reports

Swan Catchment Council Project – 01-0506 T 2006 – 2008 program

The geomorphology of Cockburn Sound is unique to the lower west coast of Australia due to the relative paucity of sheltered nearshore marine embayments along this coastline. Numerous studies on many of the commercially and/or recreationally important species that inhabit Cockburn Sound have demonstrated that for many of them this marine embayment constitutes an integral part of their life history. Since the commencement of industrial and urban development in the mid 1950s, in the waters and along the shores of Cockburn Sound, the marine fauna utilising this area have …

LSAY Briefing Reports

University study holds a distinct place in Australian society, as it provides a pathway into professional occupations. University graduates are consistently shown to have superior outcomes, in terms of employment and earnings. Does VET study provide an equivalent pathway for young people interested in non-academic careers? Are there similar benefits for those who participate in VET programs? The data for this Briefing are from the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY). The findings reported here are from three recent LSAY research reports, which are listed at the end of this Briefing. The cohort comprises young people …

Traditional Culture And Global Commodification, Albert Borgmann Oct 2008

Traditional Culture And Global Commodification, Albert Borgmann

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We can think of technology and Christianity as competing forms of life. Technology promises a life of ever greater liberty and prosperity where liberty is the liberation from the limits and burdens of the human condition and prosperity is the variety and refinement of pleasures. Christianity bears the good news of salvation, the assurance that the coming of Christ has enabled us to live a life of grace and love that is affirmed by eternal life in the presence of God.

Immune Evasion By Rabies Viruses Through The Maintenance Of Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity., Anirban Roy, Douglas C. Hooper

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The attenuated rabies virus (RV) strain Challenge Virus Standard (CVS)-F3 and a highly pathogenic strain associated with the silver-haired bats (SHBRV) can both be cleared from the central nervous system (CNS) tissues by appropriate antiviral immune mechanisms if the effectors are provided access across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In the case of SHBRV infection, antiviral immunity develops normally in the periphery but fails to open the BBB, generally resulting in a lethal outcome. To determine whether or not an absence in the CNS targeted immune response is associated with the infection with other pathogenic RV strains, we have assessed the …

Children And Nature Forum Update, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors Oct 2008

Children And Nature Forum Update, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The fifty-four member Forum is dedicated to reconnecting kids with nature. By doing so, the Forum seeks to improve children's health and overall well-being, while encouraging them to rediscover America's landscape. The Forum believes that children's disconnect from nature, if left unchecked, shortchanges their health and happiness now-- and creates a future generation of adults that is less healthy, productive and able to value and protect our country's natural resources.

Entamoeba Histolytica: Lipid Rafts Are Involved In Adhesion Of Trophozoites To Host Extracellular Matrix Components, K. Mittal, B. H. Welter, Lesly A. Temesvari

Publications

Adhesion is an important virulence function for Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amoebic dysentery. Lipid rafts, cholesterol-rich domains, function in compartmentalization of cellular processes. In E. histolytica, rafts participate in parasite–host cell interactions; however, their role in parasite–host extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions has not been explored. Disruption of rafts with a cholesterol extracting agent, methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD), resulted in inhibition of adhesion to collagen, and to a lesser extent, to fibronectin. Replenishment of cholesterol in MβCD-treated cells, using a lipoprotein–cholesterol concentrate, restored adhesion to collagen. Confocal microscopy revealed enrichment of rafts at parasite–ECM interfaces. A raft-resident adhesin, the …
