On Measuring Progress In Animal Welfare, James A. Serpell Oct 2008

On Measuring Progress In Animal Welfare, James A. Serpell

Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection

Improvements in the welfare of animals arise from two primary sources: Changes in public attitudes and beliefs regarding what constitutes acceptable treatment of animals, and mandatory changes in behavior toward animals imposed by governments and regulatory authorities. During the last 30-40 years, public and political support for improvements in animal welfare has increased dramatically in many countries. Funding from both governmental and non-governmental sources continues to grow, and the relatively new field of animal welfare science has emerged and expanded to support and inform these efforts. Many experts in the field recognize, however, that there is still a distinct gap …

Cannabis & Psychosis: The Interface Emerging Frontiers For Research, Amresh Shrivastava Oct 2008

Cannabis & Psychosis: The Interface Emerging Frontiers For Research, Amresh Shrivastava

Psychiatry Presentations

INTRODUCTION: CANNABIS CONTINUES TO AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH. ITS ABUSE IS ON RISE GLOBALLY. IN CANADA A RISE BY 30% IN LAST TEN YEARS HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. INTERRELATIONSHIP OF CANNABIS WITH PSYCHOSIS AND SCHIZOPHRENIA IS A COMPLEX ONE. CANNABIS IS HIGHLY COMORBID WITH PSYCHOSIS, & RELATED TO FUNCTIONAL DISABILITY AND OUTCOME. IT POSES SEVERAL CHALLENGES IN UNDERSTANDING CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP FOR COMORBIDITY, UNDERLYING NEUROCHEMICAL BASIS AND SPECIFICS OF SERVICE DEVELOPMENT. PREVALENCE OF CANNABIS VARIES FROM 20 TO 50% EARLY PSYCHOSIS. OBJECTIVE OF THIS PAPER IS TO REVIEW AVAILABLE LITERATURE TO IDENTIFY CHALLENGES FOR NEWER TARGETS OF RESEARCH AND …

Transcriptional Response Of Mexican Axolotls To Ambystoma Tigrinum Virus (Atv) Infection, Jennifer D. Cotter, Andrew Storfer, Robert B. Page, Christopher K. Beachy, S. Randal Voss Oct 2008

Transcriptional Response Of Mexican Axolotls To Ambystoma Tigrinum Virus (Atv) Infection, Jennifer D. Cotter, Andrew Storfer, Robert B. Page, Christopher K. Beachy, S. Randal Voss

Biology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the immunological responses of amphibians to pathogens that are causing global population declines. We used a custom microarray gene chip to characterize gene expression responses of axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) to an emerging viral pathogen, Ambystoma tigrinum virus (ATV).

RESULT: At 0, 24, 72, and 144 hours post-infection, spleen and lung samples were removed for estimation of host mRNA abundance and viral load. A total of 158 up-regulated and 105 down-regulated genes were identified across all time points using statistical and fold level criteria. The presumptive functions of these genes suggest a robust innate immune …

Overview And Summary Of Design Ideas From The High Performance Green Relocatable Classroom Charrette, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr. Oct 2008

Overview And Summary Of Design Ideas From The High Performance Green Relocatable Classroom Charrette, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr.

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Past research has shown that energy use can be reduced by 81% in improved new portable classrooms in Florida. On June 2-3, 2008 a design charrette was held in Palm Beach Gardens with the goal of developing qualities that should be considered for a High-Performance Green Relocatable Classroom (HPGRC) standard for Florida or other regions in hot and humid climates. This charrette is just one of many steps that would be involved in development and acceptance of a HPGRC standard. It is hoped that the results of this can be shared with others and used to build on the development …

Identification Of Two Gene Clusters And A Transcriptional Regulator Required For Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Glycine Betaine Catabolism, Matthew J. Wargo, Benjamin S. Szwergold, Deborah A. Hogan Oct 2008

Identification Of Two Gene Clusters And A Transcriptional Regulator Required For Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Glycine Betaine Catabolism, Matthew J. Wargo, Benjamin S. Szwergold, Deborah A. Hogan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Glycine betaine (GB), which occurs freely in the environment and is an intermediate in the catabolism of choline and carnitine, can serve as a sole source of carbon or nitrogen in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Twelve mutants defective in growth on GB as the sole carbon source were identified through a genetic screen of a nonredundant PA14 transposon mutant library. Further growth experiments showed that strains with mutations in two genes, gbcA (PA5410) and gbcB (PA5411), were capable of growth on dimethylglycine (DMG), a catabolic product of GB, but not on GB itself. Subsequent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments with 1,2-(13)C-labeled choline …
