Characteristics Of Male Pre-Service Elementary Education Candidates In North Dakota: An Exploratory Study, Daphne S. Ghorbani
Characteristics Of Male Pre-Service Elementary Education Candidates In North Dakota: An Exploratory Study, Daphne S. Ghorbani
Theses and Dissertations
In 2003 the National Education Association annual survey revealed that male teachers currently make up 35% of America's kindergarten through 12 th grade classroom teaching cadre. In grades kindergarten through sixth grade, men comprise 9% of the classroom teachers, and only 2% of classroom teachers inkindergarten through third grade are men. In 1994 Sadker and Sadker published Failing at Fairness, which examined gender biases in American kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms, including the effects of the overwhelmingly-female faculties. At the National Education Association's 2002 Representative Assembly, members adopted a measure to "identify, recognize, recruit and retain," more male teachers, …
Molecular Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Phosphorylation And Regulation, Balachandra Kumar Gorentla
Molecular Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Phosphorylation And Regulation, Balachandra Kumar Gorentla
Theses and Dissertations
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a presynaptic membrane phosphoprotein that terminates dopaminergic synaptic transmission by clearing dopamine (DA) back into presynaptic neuron by a reuptake process. DAT is also a molecular target for psychostimulants such as cocaine, amphetamine (AMPH) and methamphetamine (METH) that increase DA synaptic levels either by blocking reuptake or by inducing DA efflux. DAT phosphorylation and transport down regulation are best demonstrated with the treatment of Protein kinase C (PKC) activators such as (phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate) PMA. Serine(s) and threonine(s) are known to be involved in DAT phosphorylation.
Pretreatment with psychostimulant substrates such as AMPH and METH …
Deer–Vehicle Collision Trends At A Suburban Immunocontraception Site, Allen T. Rutberg, Ricky E. Naugle
Deer–Vehicle Collision Trends At A Suburban Immunocontraception Site, Allen T. Rutberg, Ricky E. Naugle
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Observations of extended estrus seasons in female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) vaccinated with porcine zona pellucida (PZP) immunocontraceptives have led to speculation that management use of PZP would, perversely, increase the rate of deer–vehicle collisions. To test this hypothesis, we studied PZP-treated female deer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Maryland. PZP-treated female deer did not differ from untreated female deer in risk of death by vehicle collision, and the number of deer killed in vehicle collisions was uncorrelated with the number of deer treated with PZP, whether or not population size was controlled for. …

Human–Wildlife Interactions
Paul Eugene “Gene” Bucklin (1942–2008), a wildlife specialist with USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services, was killed in a fatal car accident near his home in Chinook, Montana, on February 16, 2008. Born in Billings, Montana, he was raised on a sheep and cattle ranch in Redstone, Montana, where he learned to trap and hunt. Gene spent his life on the prairies of the “Highline,” the northern part of Montana that stretches from the Rocky Mountains of Glacier National Park to the North Dakota border. In 1979 he began a lifelong career with USDA/APHIS/ Wildlife Services in Chinook.

Lake Roosevelt is a large reservoir in northeast Washington State formed by the Grand Coulee Dam. The reservoir, which inundates portions of the Columbia River, the Spokane River, and other rivers and streams, is the focus of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LARO) that is managed by the National Park Service. LARO encompasses 100,390 acres (40,625 ha) and includes significant cultural and recreational resources. The surface area, volume, and shoreline length of Lake Roosevelt at full pool is 82,691 acres (33,490 ha), 9.41 × 1010 acre-ft (1.16 × 1010 m3) (Nigro et. al. 1981), and …

Research, Reports, and Publications
A report of a three-day conference on nonprofit leadership, held in Grand Rapids, MI in July 2007, identified that there is a leadership deficit, mentoring is needed for emerging leaders, structural challenges create barriers to nonprofit careers, and Generation X and Y believe the nonprofit sector needs more diversity. Funder support for infrastructure and operating costs, and communication to facilitate the generational leadership transition were identified as key to mitigating the leadership deficit.
When Deterrence And Death Mitigation Fall Short: Fantasy And Fetishes As Gap-Fillers In Border Regulation, Mary D. Fan
When Deterrence And Death Mitigation Fall Short: Fantasy And Fetishes As Gap-Fillers In Border Regulation, Mary D. Fan
Articles
Drawing on fieldwork and political theory with Lacanian psychoanalytic influences, this article analyzes how fantasy and fetishes help sustain strategies shown to be no solution to U.S. border control problems. More than a decade after the official launch of the border control paradigm of "prevention through deterrence," predicated on the assumption that ramping up walls, barriers, policing, and the human costs of border crossing would deter, there has been scant evidence of deterrence and much evidence of diversion of migrants to more dangerous crossing points where death rates have soared. Attempts to mitigate the cost to life have also proved …
Transitioning The Family Business, Dwight Drake
Transitioning The Family Business, Dwight Drake
Articles
By any measure, family-dominated businesses are the backbone of the American economy. Although a large majority of family businesses are managed by senior family members who are older than age 55 and more than 80 percent of such senior family members claim that they want the business to remain in the family, less than 30 percent of such businesses have tackled the challenge of developing a plan for transitioning the business to the next generation.
For over 90 percent of such families, this planning challenge is aggravated by the fact that they have no diversified wealth: the family’s wealth is …
Promoting Supportive Relationships In Youth Programs: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Mat D. Duerden, Ann Gillard
Promoting Supportive Relationships In Youth Programs: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Mat D. Duerden, Ann Gillard
Faculty Publications
Although research suggests that positive contact with nonparental adults is developmentally beneficial for youth; many adolescents do not have access to such relationships. It is important that adults structure existing relationships to optimize positive youth development. Relationships with adults, who support youth’s needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence, provide youth with scaffolding as they navigate their way through adolescence. Self-Determination Theory offers a straight-forward approach to understanding the elements of contexts that best promote the development of supportive relationships. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature concerning youth-adult relationships, including their associated prevalence and developmental benefits across …

Encouraging Physical Activity In Teens. Can Technology Help Reduce Barriers To Physical Activity In Adolescent Girls?, Tammy Toscos Phd, Anne Faber, Kay Connelly, Adity Mutsuddi Upoma
Health Services and Informatics Research
Physical activity levels of girls decline dramatically during adolescence and may be a contributor to the increasing number of obese teens in the United States. Research has shown that social support is positively correlated with physical activity levels in adolescents, particularly girls. We present the findings from a three week field study of a mobile phone application designed to create a support group for physical activity within an existing social network of adolescent girls. Our findings suggest design considerations for technologies that encourage physical activity for this user group.
Presented at 2008 Second International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for …

On The Impact Of Winter Conditions On The Dynamics Of An Isolated Population, Lev V. Nedorezov, E. V. Volkova, Alexandr M. Sadykov
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
This chapter is devoted to the analysis of single-species population dynamics models with overlapping and non-overlapping generations. Within the framework of all models it is assumed that there are no activities of individuals during the wintertime (as, for example, is the case for forest insect populations in the boreal zone), and changes in population size at these moments are described with a broken trajectory (“jump down”). Also, it is assumed that the fecundity of individuals is constant and that the quota of individuals surviving winter depends on the within-year population dynamics. The dynamics of the models, which are determined by …

Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) are important pests of Solanaceae in many countries. Several studies have demonstrated that T. urticae is an acceptable prey to many predatory mites, although the suitability of this prey depends on the host plant. T. evansi, has been shown to be an unfavorable prey to most predatory mites that have been tested against it. The predator Phytoseiulus fragariae Denmark and Schicha (Acari: Phytoseiidae) has been found in association with the two species in Brazil. The objective of this work was to compare biological parameters of P. fragariae on T. …

Seasonal Variation In The Physical Characteristics Of The Copepod Calanus Finmarchicus (Gunnerus) Along The North Atlantic, A. A. Yusuf, L. Webster
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Physical oceanographic changes such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, which manifested in the 1990s, are said to affect the seasonal/stage dependent, vertical migrations and life cycle of Calanus finmarchicus. C4-C6 stages of C. finmarchicus collected during spring and summer in 2002 from the Irminger Sea, Greenland Sea, Iceland shelf and the Raykjanes Ridge were analysed microscopically for their prosome and total body lengths and gravimetrically for dry weights. Dry weight ranged from 60 μg individual-1 in C4 to 326.6 μg individual-1 in C6 stages. Total body lengths showed an increase with sample stage and season (2.10 mm in spring C4 …

Concentration-Dependent Parsimonious Releaser Roles Of Gregarious Male Pheromone Of The Desert Locust, Schistocerca Gregaria, Edwin Rono, Peter G.N. Njagi, Magzoub O. Bashir, Ahmed Hassanali
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The responses of (i) groups of crowd-reared mature males of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria to a choice of two columns of air, one permeated with different concentrations of phenylacetonitrile (PAN), the major component of gregarious-phase male-produced pheromone, and the other untreated, and (ii) individual crowd-reared mature males of the insect to varying concentration gradients of PAN, were studied in two different types of arena. In the choice assay, locusts preferred to be within PAN-permeated air column at low relative doses of the pheromone, but away from PAN at high relative doses. In the second assay, individual locusts were arrested close …

Over two billion people in tropical countries are at risk from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, hemorrhagic fever, malaria and filariasis. The search for effective vaccines against these diseases is still in progress. It is estimated that US $ 2 billion is spent on malaria control and treatment programmes in Africa annually. The problem has become increasingly difficult to manage because of the spread of resistance to antimalarial drugs by the parasites resulting in increased severity of the disease. Protection from mosquito bites is still the most important measure to control the disease. However, vector resistance to insecticides is …
