Antagonism Of Medetomidine Sedation In Goats By Atipamezole And Yohimbine, Mahmood B. Mahmood, Fouad K. Mohammad

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists atipamezole and yohimbine were used to antagonize medetomidine-induced sedation in 6-8-month-old native breed female goats. Intramuscular injection of medetomidine at the dose rate of 40 \mu g/kg body weight induced sedation and recumbency within 10-20 min in the goats. After recumbency, the goats were injected with saline (5 ml) (control group), atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg), or yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg) via the jugular vein. The duration of recumbency in the control group was 90 ± 9 min (mean ± SE). The effects of sedation continued in the control group goats even after regaining the righting reflex and standing. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A systemic infection with Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus is described in a 22-day-old female foal for the first time in Turkey. Clinically the foal was in poor condition and had severe pneumonia. Painful swellings of the carpal and tarsal joints were evident. Examination of the dam revealed clinical mastitis. Postmortem histopathological and microbiological examinations of samples from the foal revealed a disseminated infection with S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus. The causative agent was also recovered in pure culture from a milk sample of the mare.

Biased Assimilation, Polarization, And Cultural Credibility: An Experimental Study Of Nanotechnology Risk Perceptions, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, Paul Slovic, John Gastil, Geoffrey L. Cohen, Douglass A. Kysar

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

We present the results from the second in a series of ongoing experimental studies of public perceptions of nanotechnology risks. Like the first study, the current one found that members of the public, most of whom know little or nothing about nanotechnology, polarize along cultural lines when exposed to information about it. Extending previous results, the current study also found that cultural polarization of this sort interacts with the perceived cultural identities of policy advocates. Polarization along expected lines grew even more extreme when subjects of diverse cultural outlooks observed an advocate whose values they share advancing an argument they …

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The cultural cognition hypothesis holds that individuals are disposed to form risk perceptions that reflect and reinforce their commitments to contested views of the good society. This paper reports the results of a study that used the controversy over mandatory HPV vaccination to test the cultural cognition hypothesis. Although public health officials have recommended that all girls aged 11 or 12 be vaccinated for HPV - a virus that causes cervical cancer and that is transmitted by sexual contact - political controversy has blocked adoption of mandatory school-enrollment vaccination programs in all but one state. A multi-stage experimental study of …

A Model Compound Study: The Ecotoxicological Evaluation Of Five Organic Contaminants With A Battery Of Marine Bioassays, Ailbhe Macken, Michelle Giltrap, Barry Foley, Evin Mcgovern, Brendan Mchugh, Maria Davoren

Articles

This paper describes the ecotoxicological evaluation of five organic contaminants frequently detected in marine sediments (tributyltin, triphenyltin, benzo[a]pyrene, fluoranthene, and PCB 153) using three marine species (Vibrio fischeri, Tetraselmis suecica, and Tisbe battagliai). The sensitivity of each species varied for all compounds. The triorganotins were consistently the most toxic to all species. The applicability of each test system to assess the acute toxicity of environmental contaminants and their use in Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) is discussed. Suitability of the Microtox and T. battagliai tests for employment in TIE studies were further assessed through spiking experiments with tributyltin. Results demonstrated that …

Maximizing Special Education Teacher Retention: Teacher's Perceptions Of Administrative Support In Pre K-12 Public Schools As Implications For Improvement, Dawn R. Showers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of special education teachers regarding administrative support provided by their building principals as related to teacher retention, gender, and disability category taught. Research over the course of the past decade indicates that teachers are more likely to leave the teaching profession when they fail to receive an adequate amount of administrative support. A survey questionnaire was used to collect 125 responses from special education teachers working in South Central Pennsylvania public schools. The population sample consisted of teachers from four special education teacher certification categories including classroom and itinerant staff. …

Stages Of Relationship Change And Individual And Couple Adjustment, Jacob A. Lacoursiere Jan 2008

Stages Of Relationship Change And Individual And Couple Adjustment, Jacob A. Lacoursiere

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Although Prochaska and DiClemente (1984) considered the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) to be relevant to couples therapy, there is a paucity of research in this area. Understanding how couples initiate change in their relationship still proves difficult due to barriers in the collection of couple level data and the fact that the majority of research on the TTM is individualistic in nature (Fowers, 2001; Schneider, 2003). Schneider (2003) reported that research suggests a relationship between change processes and relationship adjustment in couples. To my knowledge this study is the first test of the reliability and correlates of relationship change, …

Cloning, Characterization And Subcellular Localization Of The N (Nucleocapsid) And P (Phosphoprotein) Protein Of The Sydv (Potato Yellow Dwarf Virus Sanguinolenta Strain), Debasish Ghosh Jan 2008

Cloning, Characterization And Subcellular Localization Of The N (Nucleocapsid) And P (Phosphoprotein) Protein Of The Sydv (Potato Yellow Dwarf Virus Sanguinolenta Strain), Debasish Ghosh

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Potato yellow dwarf virus (PYDV) is the type member of the genus Nucleorhabdovirus. The virus replicates in the nuclei of infected cells and mature virions accumulate in the perinuclear space after viral cores bud through the inner nuclear membrane. The virus was first described as an extremely destructive pathogen of potato (Solanum tuberosum) and other members of family Solanaceae. There are two different strains of PYDV based on their insect-vector specificity, namely SYDV (sanguinolenta strain) and CYDV (constricta strain). PYDV is considered a model system to study virus-vector relationship, particularly for agriculturally harmful rhabdoviruses. However, very little is known about …

Clinical Functional Testing In People 30-60 Years Old. Expected Performance Values And Correlations To Muscle Fitness And Activity Level, Robert A. (Tony) English Jan 2008

Clinical Functional Testing In People 30-60 Years Old. Expected Performance Values And Correlations To Muscle Fitness And Activity Level, Robert A. (Tony) English

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Activity and fitness levels decline through the years from 30 to 60 years of age. Minimal research is available regarding functional assessment tools in this population. Reliable functional tools are needed to reintroduce individuals to appropriate physical activity levels following an injury and to maintain high levels of participation through their lifespan. The purposes of this study were multiple: 1) determine if three functional tests correspond with neuromotor fitness levels, 2) establish a model of functional tests, activity levels and descriptive data that distinguishes the most from the least fit, 3) describe expected mean functional test performances, and 4) demonstrate …

Comparing Personality Disorder Models: Ffm And Dsm-Iv-Tr, Douglas B. Samuel Jan 2008

Comparing Personality Disorder Models: Ffm And Dsm-Iv-Tr, Douglas B. Samuel

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) defines personality disorders as categorical entities that are distinct from themselves and from normal personality traits. However, many scientists now believe that personality disorders can best be conceptualized using a dimensional model of traits that span normal and abnormal personality, such as the Five-Factor Model (FFM). Many research studies have indicated that the current personality disorder system can be adequately conceptualized using the FFM. However, if the FFM or any dimensional model is to be considered as a credible alternative to …

Application Of Linear Free Energy Relationships In The Prediction Of Triglyceride/Water Partition Coefficients And Lipid Bilayer Permeability Coefficients Of Small Organic Molecules And Peptides, Yichen Cao Jan 2008

Application Of Linear Free Energy Relationships In The Prediction Of Triglyceride/Water Partition Coefficients And Lipid Bilayer Permeability Coefficients Of Small Organic Molecules And Peptides, Yichen Cao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Computational methods such as linear free energy relationships (LFERs) offer a useful high-throughput solution to quickly evaluate drug developability, e.g. membrane permeability, organic solvent/water partition coefficients, and solubility. LFERs typically assume the contribution of structural components/functional groups to the overall properties of a given molecule to be constant and independent. This dissertation describes a series of studies in which linear free energy relationships were developed to predict solvation of small organic molecules in lipid formulations, specifically, triglyceride containing solvents and phospholipid-based liposomes. The formation of intermolecular HBs in triglyceride solvents (homogenous with H-bond accepting ability) and intramolecular HBs within the …

In 2003, the American Political Science Association (APSA) selected New Orleans as the site for its 2012 annual meeting.

In 2004, 78 percent of Louisiana voters (including 54 percent in Orleans Parish) passed the following amendment to their state constitution:

Marriage in the state of Louisiana shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman. No official or court of the state of Louisiana shall construe this constitution or any state law to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any member of a union other than the union of one man and …

God’S Littlest Children And The Right To Live: The Case For A Positivist Pro-Life Overturning Of Roe, Raymond B. Marcin Jan 2008

God’S Littlest Children And The Right To Live: The Case For A Positivist Pro-Life Overturning Of Roe, Raymond B. Marcin

Scholarly Articles

For those who understand that God's littlest children have the same right to life that all God's children have, the day on which the United States Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade was a day that echoed the grief and frustration that, more than a century earlier, accompanied the decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford. And the day on which the United States Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade and all the other pro-abortion decisions will be a day of heart-felt thanksgiving. From the pro-life perspective, however, it will not be enough, that the Supreme Court merely overturns …

Peer Victimization, Depression, And Suicidality In Adolescents, Anat Brunstein Klomek, Frank Marrocco, Marjorie Kleinman, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Madelyn S. Gould

Publications and Research

The association between specific types of peer victimization with depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts among adolescents was examined. A self-report survey was completed by 2,342 high-school students. Regression analyses indicated that frequent exposure to all types of peer victimization was related to high risk of depression, ideation, and attempts compared to students not victimized. Infrequent victimization was also related to increased risk, particularly among females. The more types of victimization the higher the risk for depression and suicidality among both genders. Specific types of peer victimization are a potential risk factor for adolescent depression and suicidality. It is important …

Objective: To determine whether maternal violence-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), reflective functioning (RF), and/or quality of mental representations of her child predicts maternal behavior within a referred sample of mothers exposed to interpersonal violence and their children (aged 8–50 months). Method: A total of 41 dyads completed 2 videotaped visits including measures of maternal mentalrepresentations and behavior. Results: Negative and distorted maternal mental representations predicted atypical behavior (Cohen’s d > 1.0). Although maternal PTSD and RF impacted mental representations, no significant relationships were found between PTSD, RF, and overall atypical caregiving behavior. Severity of maternal PTSD …

Scholarly Articles

This article, which draws on the author's experience as a member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee of the Organization of American States, focuses on the problem of crafting an appropriate hemispheric regime for the protection of consumer rights. The subject is now a major element in the agenda of the OAS Specialized Conference on Private International Law (know also under its Spanish acronym as the CIDIP process), in part because of the increased salience of the issue in light of increasing e-commerce. The article, based on the author's presentation at a symposium at the St. Thomas School of Law in …

Bonded Labor In India, Devin Finn Jan 2008

Bonded Labor In India, Devin Finn

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Bonded labor, which is characterized by a long-term relationship between employer and employee, is usually solidified through a loan, and is embedded intricately in India’s socio-economic culture—a culture that is a product of class relations, a colonial history, and persistent poverty among many citizens. Also known as debt bondage, bonded labor is a specific form of forced labor in which compulsion into servitude is derived from debt. Categorized and examined in the scholarly literature as a type of forced labor, bonded labor entails constraints on the conditions and duration of work by an individual. Not all bonded labor is forced, …

The Economic Foundations Of Contemporary Slavery, Justin Guay Jan 2008

The Economic Foundations Of Contemporary Slavery, Justin Guay

Human Rights & Human Welfare

“Slavery existed before money or law” (Hochschild 2005). Indeed the “peculiar institution” is one of humanity’s oldest. It has, however, evolved and manifested itself quite distinctly in different periods of history. In contrast to historical views of slavery that are associated with Chattel Slavery, numerous forms fall under the umbrella term of contemporary slavery. The United Nations (U.N.) Working Group recognizes such radically new forms as: child labor, children in conflict, trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, and the sale of children. The International Labor Office (ILO) approaches the topic through the lens of forced labor. The ILO recognizes slavery and …

Forced Labor In The United States: A Contemporary Problem In Need Of A Contemporary Solution, Chrissey Buckley

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Legal slavery ended in the United States in 1865, yet the practice of forcing individuals to work against their will, oftentimes in inhumane conditions, continues today. Currently there are around 50,000 people working in forced labor situations in the United States (Bales 47). Although this number is smaller than it was during the 18th century, finding and freeing these individuals is difficult because they are hidden away and exploited. The United States is now at a critical juncture in its struggle to end forced labor. In 2000, the U.S. Government enacted legislation that holds perpetrators of forced labor accountable, and …
