Opportunities For Network Development In Kazakhstan - Wimax, Zhanibek Dossybayev
Theses
The purpose of this paper is to discuss Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wimax) technology-based network deployment opportunities in Kazakhstan. To be widely adapted and be profitable, even the very promising technology with advantageous features must experience market testing and meet user needs. This project consists of two parts; the first part consists of analysis while the second part focuses on implementation. In the first part, the telecommunications industry of Kazakhstan is divided into three main segments: fixed communication, mobile communication, and internet & data communication. Some market characteristics are viewed based on data from National Statistics Agency of Kazakhstan, …
Fixed Or Flexible: The Effect Of Negative Feedback On One's Religious Identity, Erika Brown
Fixed Or Flexible: The Effect Of Negative Feedback On One's Religious Identity, Erika Brown
Modern Psychological Studies
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of negative feedback on self-reported religious identity among Christian students. After initially rating themselves on a computer-administered continuous scale ranging from as religious as possible to not at all religious, participants completed a difficult Bible trivia quiz and received negative feedback regarding their performance. The participants were then made to believe that their initial computer ratings had been lost, and were asked to rate themselves a second time. Individuals also completed the Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale and were divided into high and low religiosity groups. Statistical analyses revealed that …
Changes In Breast Cancer Survivors' Prayer From Before Diagnosis To Currently: A Pilot Study, Jean C. Bilger, Jennifer Eldridge-Houser, Carol Cox
Changes In Breast Cancer Survivors' Prayer From Before Diagnosis To Currently: A Pilot Study, Jean C. Bilger, Jennifer Eldridge-Houser, Carol Cox
Modern Psychological Studies
The purpose of this pilot study is to compare the frequency, length, types, and experiences of prayer for breast cancer survivors before they were diagnosed and currently. Using the Cancer Survivor Prayer Scale (CSPS), survivors had a statistically significant (p < .05) increase in types of prayer, prayer experiences, and the closeness in their relationship with God. The main themes in the written responses were feelings of permanence regarding God's love, strong trust in God, feeling comforted during treatment by God and people, and requesting specific answers to prayers. The significant findings of this study demonstrate a need for further research into the prayer practices of breast cancer survivors and expansion of the study to a larger, more diverse sample.
International Technology Transfer For Climate Policy, David Popp
International Technology Transfer For Climate Policy, David Popp
Center for Policy Research
While the developed world is starting to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, emissions from the developing world are increasing as a result of economic growth. Reducing these emissions while still enabling developing countries to grow requires the use of new technologies. In most cases, these technologies are first created in high-income countries. Thus, the challenge for climate policy is to encourage the transfer of these climate-friendly technologies to the developing world. This policy brief reviews the economic literature on environmental technology transfer. It then discusses the implications of this literature for climate policy, focusing on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) …
Our Troubled Health Care System: Why Is It So Hard To Fix?, Judy Feder
Our Troubled Health Care System: Why Is It So Hard To Fix?, Judy Feder
Center for Policy Research
This brief draws heavily on Judith Feder, 2004, "Crowd-Out and the Politics of Health Reform," The Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics 32(3): 461-464. We all know that affordable health care is now back on the political agenda, and it's about time! Because all of us--families, businesses, and governments--are struggling with the ever-increasing costs of care. Every year about a million people are added to the rolls of the uninsured. In 2006, it was even more, over 2 million. The number of people without health insurance coverage has reached more than 47 million. People *with* insurance are seeing their benefits …
Public Sentiment And Tobacco Control Policy, Perry Singleton
Public Sentiment And Tobacco Control Policy, Perry Singleton
Center for Policy Research
The well-documented correlation between cigarette excise taxes and cigarette demand may not be entirely causal if excise taxes reflect public sentiment towards smoking. I consider whether proxies for smoking sentiment--the prevalence of smoking by education and intention to quit statuses--are correlated with support for and implementation of tobacco control laws. I find that cigarette excise taxes are most sensitive to the prevalence of educated smokers who do not want to quit. Additionally, when proxies for public sentiment are included, the estimated elasticity of cigarette demand declines from -2.0 to -1.3.

Mediterranean Diet And Breast Density In The Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study, Marilyn Tseng, Thomas A. Sellers, Robert A. Vierkant, Lawrence H. Kushi, Celine M. Vachon
Kinesiology and Public Health
Mediterranean populations’ lower breast cancer incidence has been attributed to a traditional Mediterranean diet, but few studies have quantified Mediterranean dietary pattern intake in relation to breast cancer. We examined the association of a Mediterranean diet scale (MDS) with mammographic breast density as a surrogate marker for breast cancer risk. Participants completed a dietary questionnaire and provided screening mammograms for breast density assessment using a computer-assisted method. Among 1,286 women, MDS was not clearly associated with percent density in multivariate linear regression analyses. Because of previous work suggesting dietary effects limited to smokers, we conducted stratified analyses and found MDS …

Dietary Patterns And Breast Density In The Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study, Marilyn Tseng, Robert A. Vierkant, Lawrence H. Kushi, Thomas A. Sellers, Celine M. Vachon
Kinesiology and Public Health
Objective Whether dietary patterns, rather than single foods or nutrients, are associated with breast density is not known. We investigated this in the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study. Methods Participants completed a 153-item food frequency questionnaire and provided screening mammograms for breast density assessment using a computer-assisted method. We used multivariate linear regression to quantify dietary pattern–breast density associations. Results Among 3,147 women with dietary information, three dietary patterns emerged from principal components analysis: a fruit–vegetable–cereal pattern, a salad–sauce–pasta/ grain pattern, and a meat–starch pattern. Among 1,286 women with breast density estimates, the fruit–vegetable–cereal and salad–sauce–pasta/grain patterns were inversely associated …

Kinesiology and Public Health
Data regarding convenient, valid methods for measuring U.S. isoflavone intake are limited. We evaluated a soy food questionnaire (SFQ), the Willett food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and overnight urine samples relative to excretion in 24-h urine samples. We also described intake among women in a high-risk program for breast or ovarian cancer. Between April 2002 and June 2003, 451 women aged 30 to 50 yr with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer completed the SFQ and FFQ. Of them, 27 provided four 24-h and overnight urine specimens. In these women, 24-h sample measures were correlated with SFQ estimates of …

Metabolic Syndrome And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Obese Individuals Seeking Weight Reduction, Adam Gilden Tsai, Thomas A. Wadden, David B. Sarwer, Robert I. Berkowitz, Leslie G. Womble, Louise A. Hesson, Suzanne Phelan, Rebecca Rothman
Kinesiology and Public Health
Background: No previous research has examined the association between metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using standard criteria for defining MetSyn. We hypothesized that MetSyn would be associated with lower HRQoL on measures of physical and mental health.
Methods and Procedures: Participants were 361 individuals in two randomized weight loss trials. MetSyn was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Panel criteria. The Medical Outcomes Study, Short Form-36 (SF-36) was used to assess HRQoL. Differences in HRQoL and in clinical and psychosocial characteristics were compared among participants with and without MetSyn. Multiple regression was used to determine predictors …

An objective of a health process is one where patients can stay healthy with the support of expert medical advice when they need it, at any location and any time. An associated aim would be the development of a system which places increased emphasis on preventative measures as a first point of contact with the patient. This research is a step along the road towards this type of preventative healthcare for cardiac patients. It seeks to develop a smart mobile ECG monitoring system that requests and records context information about what is happening around the subject when an arrhythmia event …

Open And Accessible: The Relationship Between Closures And Circulation In School Library Media Centers, Gail Dickinson, Karen Gavigan, Shana Pribesh
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
A hallmark of school library media best practice is for the library media center to be open and accessible to patron use before, during, and after the school day and throughout the entire school year. Anecdotal evidence and informal discussion among school library media specialists indicate that library media facilities are sometimes used for activities unrelated to the mission of the school library media program in the school. These activities may close the library media center to regular patron use for all or part of the school day. This study surveyed school library media specialists in two states and examined …

Prisons and jails pose a significant challenge to the rule of law within American boundaries. As a nation, we are committed to constitutional regulation of governmental treatment of even those who have broken society’s rules. And accordingly, most of our prisons and jails are run by committed professionals who care about prisoner welfare and constitutional compliance. At the same time, for prisons—closed institutions holding an ever-growing disempowered population—most of the methods by which we, as a polity, foster government accountability and equality among citizens are unavailable or at least not currently practiced. In the absence of other levers by which …

"Think Glocal, Act Glocal": The Praxis Of Social Justice Lawyering In The Global Era, Lauren Carasik
Faculty Scholarship
Millions of people in the world struggle to survive in extreme economic deprivation, and deteriorating conditions have highlighted the failure of international development policies to "lift all boats." The complex and globalized context of poverty compels social justice lawyers to innovate transnational advocacy strategies, expanding human rights norms as part of those efforts. This Article suggests a cross-border, collaborative advocacy model for clinical education. The model is premised on theories of global interconnectedness that integrate progressive lawyering, social change theory and anti-poverty work in the global era, thereby contributing to the discourse about and praxis of combating international economic injustice. …

Ankyrin-G In Renal Epithelia: Identification Of Novel Isoforms And The Interaction Between Ankyrin-G And H+/K+-Atpase Alpha 2 Subunit, Jun Li
All ETDs from UAB
Ankyrins are multifunctional membrane adaptors which link diverse membrane proteins to the spectrin-based membrane cytoskeleton. Ankyrin-G (Ank-G, encoded by the Ank-3 gene) is broadly expressed and exhibits alternative splicing in different tissues, giving rise to isoforms ranging in Mr from 100-480 kDa. However, little is known about the alternative promoter usage and alternative splicing patterns of the Ank-3 gene in kidney, particularly at the N-terminus. In the first study, a novel full-length Ank-G cDNA and two novel Ank-G amino termini were isolated from mouse kidney by cDNA library screening and RNA ligase-mediated rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RLM-RACE). Their distinct …

Evaluating The Effects Of Sensory Focus And Distraction On Ethnic Differences In Reports Of Laboratory Induced Pain, Regina Lynette Mcconley
All ETDs from UAB
There is consistent evidence of ethnic group differences in pain response in clinical and laboratory settings. However, few studies have examined potential contributors to the group differences, or assessed the efficacy of interventions to reduce pain across ethnic groups. The aims of the study were to: 1. Compare African Americans and non-Hispanic Whites’ (NH Whites) scores on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, 2. Compare the pain responses (e.g., pain threshold, tolerance, intensity and unpleasantness) of African Americans and NH Whites in response to the Cold Pressor Procedure (CPT), and 3. Evaluate the effects of sensory focus and distraction interventions on pain …

Free -Knot Splines And Bootstrapping For Nonlinear Modeling In Complex Samples, Scott W. Keith
All ETDs from UAB
Studies on body mass index (BMI) as it relates to headache or mortality have noted considerable nonlinearity. Approaches to rigorously analyzing these relationships have been limited to generalized linear models and survival models using either categorizations or polynomials of BMI. I have designed, evaluated, and implemented a piecewise linear logistic regression framework for modeling nonlinearity between a binary outcome and a continuous predictor, such as BMI, adjusted for covariates in complex samples. Least squares and maximum likelihood estimation methods were used to numerically optimize free-knot splines. Inference methods utilized both parametric and nonparametric bootstrapping. Parameter estimates were structured for interpretability …

The purpose of this investigation was to describe and compare patterns of hospice use in Alabama and to assess barriers to receiving such care as perceived by hospice providers across the state. We used death certificate and other administrative records from the Alabama Center for Health Statistics to ascertain hospice use during the years 2002 to 2005. Crude rates of hospice use were calculated across individual and area-level characteristics. Prevalence ratios were calculated using modified Poisson regression to evaluate the impact of these factors on hospice use. To assess barriers to hospice care, all hospices in Alabama (N = 193) …
