Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann
Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann
The Geographical Bulletin
This research examines potential spatial accessibility of adult American Sign Language (ASL) learning opportunities in Los Angeles County, California (USA). Over 90% of all deaf children are born to hearing parents, who typically do not know sign language. Research has shown that deaf children whose parents learn sign language tend to have better outcomes than those who do not. Thus, adult accessibility to sign language classes is crucial for the success of deaf children. The Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method was used to calculate a provider-to-population ratio using network analysis and aggregate these ratios within population catchment areas. The …
Rethinking Poverty Indices: Unveiling The Unseen Realities Of India, Soumyabrata Mondal, Anand Prasad Mishra
Rethinking Poverty Indices: Unveiling The Unseen Realities Of India, Soumyabrata Mondal, Anand Prasad Mishra
The Geographical Bulletin
This article critically assesses India’s recent claims of rapid poverty reduction by examining the methodological, political, and data-related foundations of the Niti Aayog Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). It scrutinises key methodological choices such as indicator selection, weighting structures, and the dependence on NFHS (National Family Health Survey) data which only partially reflect the socioeconomic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on debates surrounding the Alkire–Foster framework, the essay highlights how modifications to the MPI such as the inclusion of widely achieved indicators and the exclusion of consumption expenditure may underestimate deprivation and produce overly optimistic trends. It argues that …
Prairie, Nature, Innovation: Midwest Identity Represented In State Quarters, Kady Nolte, Gillian Acheson
Prairie, Nature, Innovation: Midwest Identity Represented In State Quarters, Kady Nolte, Gillian Acheson
The Geographical Bulletin
The US Commemorative Quarter Program, begun in 1999, was wildly popular with millions of people collecting the coins. Fifty new designs were introduced for the quarter’s reverse that intended to represent each state’s unique history and identity. These coins are a piece of material culture that can be studied to understand how they represent place identity, specifically state and regional identity in the US Midwest. In this study, quarters were examined using content analysis to understand how each design represented its state. Coins were studied individually and then wholistically to identify commonalities shared within the Midwest. Three themes were identified …
Discussing Discus: Exploring Coaching Interactions In A Throws Training Environment, Alexandra Baltazar Hall
Discussing Discus: Exploring Coaching Interactions In A Throws Training Environment, Alexandra Baltazar Hall
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The literature on sport coaching has predominantly employed deductive and qualitative approaches to the study of pre-defined coach behaviours, and athlete self-reported perceptions of coaching communication. These methods overlook the inherently contextual and interactional nature of coaching, where the effective communication of sport-specific feedback and technical corrections are key to improving athletic ability. This study employs Discursive Psychology (DP) and Conversation Analysis (CA) to the inductive exploration of coaching interactions and practices in an indoor throws training environment, with a group of discus throwers. Audio-visual recordings of a training session were analysed using CA, and transcribed with Jefferson (2012) and …
Workplace Strain And Musculoskeletal Health In Nurses, Abriella Smith
Workplace Strain And Musculoskeletal Health In Nurses, Abriella Smith
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Musculoskeletal disorders are common among healthcare professionals due to repetitive movement, prolonged standing, and physically demanding work environments. In nursing, these challenges are intensified by psychosocial stressors such as staffing shortages, role ambiguity, and increased cognitive workload. Ergonomic assessments using the Hand Threshold Limit Value (TLV) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) revealed significant strain associated with patient transport, CPR, and extended administrative duties. The resulting discomfort contributes to chronic pain, fatigue, and decreased focus, which can impair overall job performance and long-term health. Implementing ergonomic interventions along with regular rest breaks and task rotation can alleviate physical strain, enhance …
Ergonomic Risks And Musculoskeletal Disorders In Construction And Maintenance Work: A Case Study Of Eddie’S Journey, Jasmine Cruz
Ergonomic Risks And Musculoskeletal Disorders In Construction And Maintenance Work: A Case Study Of Eddie’S Journey, Jasmine Cruz
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This study examines the long-term musculoskeletal effects experienced by Eddie, a 71-year-old retired construction worker and building superintendent. Over several decades, Eddie’s work involved repetitive lifting, bending, twisting, and heavy tool use, factors contributing to chronic pain in his knees, back, shoulders, and wrists. Two ergonomic analysis tools were applied: the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and the Hand Activity Threshold Limit Value (TLV). The REBA identified shoveling tasks as high-risk (score = 9), with excessive trunk flexion and repetitive motion driving strain. The Hand TLV showed Eddie’s right hand exceeded the threshold limit, indicating high ergonomic risk from repetitive, …
Arthritis: A Debilitating Condition For A School Teacher, Matthew Esty
Arthritis: A Debilitating Condition For A School Teacher, Matthew Esty
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Participant E is a sixty-four-year-old schoolteacher who suffers from severe arthritis. She sustained a majority of the damage to her knee from her time as a teacher. A car accident in December of 2024 caused significant damage to her knees, hip, and neck. She follows a consistent routine on weekdays when she has work. Her knee injuries have been made worse from falls she had and fights between students she had to stop. Her biggest struggle is fitting into certain things. She suffers from pain throughout the majority of her body. To analyze Participant E’s risk two different ergonomic tools …
Mission Ready, Physically Wrecked: Ergonomic Case Study Of Aircrew Bag Drags, Carissa Aumack
Mission Ready, Physically Wrecked: Ergonomic Case Study Of Aircrew Bag Drags, Carissa Aumack
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The following work is a case study of a retired United States Air Force officer, callsign Doppler, whose former roles included instructor pilot and aircraft commander for C-5 Galaxies. During their service as a commissioned officer, Doppler incurred multiple repetitive musculoskeletal injuries to their cervical and thoracic back, which they believe to have been exacerbated by the task design associated with “bag drags”. “Bag drags” are the processes by which all crew luggage is loaded onto the aircraft after receiving deployment orders, with each crew member (~9-12) bringing a minimum of five bags ranging between 50-60 lbs. each. In an …

ERAU RoboRacer's autonomous racing presents unique challenges for real-time decision-making, requiring vehicles to operate at the limits of performance while maintaining safety in dynamic environments. It aims to create a 1:10-scale autonomous race car that integrates perception, planning, and control to compete in RoboRacer competitions while serving as a research platform for high-speed autonomy. The system fuses data from LiDAR, cameras, and IMU sensors to perform simultaneous localization and mapping, detect obstacles and competitors, and plan optimal racing lines for both time-trial and head-to-head racing. Control is achieved through a hybrid approach combining pure pursuit, PID velocity control, and model …
Systemic Dehumanization In The Dprk: A Human Security Analysis, Aleksandria Pavlenko
Systemic Dehumanization In The Dprk: A Human Security Analysis, Aleksandria Pavlenko
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This paper examines personal security in North Korea, or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The case of DPRK shows how individual safety, dignity, and freedom are jeopardized in one of the most oppressive and militarized regimes of the world. Informed by scholarship, this case study shows how the oppressive tools of control, namely the system of ideological dominance, the caste-like songbun hierarchy, and the ubiquitous surveillance system, systematically dehumanize the population of North Korea. For the most part, the DPRK regime of control is an instance of structural violence, which uses psychological and emotional means of manipulation to …

The Exploration of Black Women Leaders in Rural Community Colleges
Abstract: Black women have a hunger for education and self-sufficiency. Among Black students in higher education, women are more likely than men to earn degrees: Black women obtain 64.1% of bachelor’s degrees, 71.5% of master’s degrees, and 65.9% of doctoral, medical, and dental degrees (AAUW, n.d.). Yet despite this drive, dedication, and ambition, there remains a scarcity of Black women leaders in rural areas, particularly in community colleges. And when a successful Black woman does rise to a position of influence, there isn't a blueprint or road map for others …
Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham
Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham
Global Tides
This study examines whether military expenditure reduces inequality-adjusted human development and how national governance quality moderates these effects. Using panel data covering 121 countries from 2010-2023, two-way fixed effects models are employed to estimate the relationship between military spending and the Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI). Three key findings emerge from the analysis based on the resulting data. First, a one percentage point increase in military spending reduces IHDI by 0.0012-0.0015 points. Second, the effects prove seven times larger in developed countries than in developing ones, which runs contrary to expectations and prior literature. Lastly, political stability emerged as a …
