Resiliency In Hispanic Middle School Students: A Direct Assessment, Randy Horner
Resiliency In Hispanic Middle School Students: A Direct Assessment, Randy Horner
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to identify the level of resiliency found in middle school Latinos in the south suburbs of Chicago. The Hispanic population is currently booming with the most growth coming from Mexican Immigrants. Many young Hispanics face munerous stressors attributed to cultural issues and low Socioeconomicstatus (SES). Few studies have examined resiliency in young Hispanics. Resiliency plays an integral part in adjusting to life, and a lack of, or passel of it can lead to maladjustment or negative outcomes. This study compared the level of resiliency between Hispanic middle school males and Caucasian middle school males. …
Predicting Eating Disordered Behavior In Adolescent Boys, Kurt Wagner
Predicting Eating Disordered Behavior In Adolescent Boys, Kurt Wagner
Masters Theses
Although much research exists on eating disorders, little exists regarding the prevalence and correlates of eating disordered behavior among males, particularly at the peak age of onset: early adolescence. The current study hypothesizes that eating disordered behavior in male adolescents is most correlated with self-dissatisfaction of musculature, then dissatisfaction of apparent body fat, drive for muscularity, their reasons for exercise, and body mass index. High school males (n = 148) were surveyed regarding these attitudes and beliefs, and about symptoms of eating disordered behavior. The purpose was to determine correlates of eating disordered behavior among adolescent boys, then develop a …
Examining The Impact Of A Little Book Intervention On The Early Literacy Skills Of Children In Head Start Via The Individual Growth And Development Indicators, Laura J. Holstius
Examining The Impact Of A Little Book Intervention On The Early Literacy Skills Of Children In Head Start Via The Individual Growth And Development Indicators, Laura J. Holstius
Masters Theses
This study examined whether or not exposure to Rhyme and Letter Little Books significantly increased the rhyming and initial sound/alliteration recognition skills of academically at-risk preschool children. Twice a week for eight weeks, students in a Head Start program listened to a researcher present a lesson with either the Rhyme and Letter Little Books or the original Little Books. It was hypothesized that statistically significant differences in the rhyming and initial sound recognition skills between the two groups would exist at the end of the intervention because the Rhyme and Letter Little Books were created to foster phonological awareness skills …
Predictors Of Stress And Help Seeking: Exploring Group Differences Among Traditional And Nontraditional Female College Students, Stacey Priya Raj
Predictors Of Stress And Help Seeking: Exploring Group Differences Among Traditional And Nontraditional Female College Students, Stacey Priya Raj
Masters Theses
Enrollment of nontraditional women in colleges continues to increase but despite their academic strengths, nontraditional students have higher attrition rates. Although psychological counseling may support the academic pursuits of nontraditional women, little is known about their attitudes toward help seeking. Recognizing the diversity among nontraditional female students, this study explores factors which predict stress and help seeking among 3 groups of female students: traditional age (24 and younger), nontraditional age (25 and older) non-parents, and nontraditional age parents. One hundred seventy-six female students between the ages of 18 and 57 completed measures of role responsibility and support, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem …
Sexual Cognitions Of Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors, Christa M. Smith
Sexual Cognitions Of Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors, Christa M. Smith
Masters Theses
Studies have examined the effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) including the relationship between CSA and force cognitions (Renaud & Byers, 2005). However, no studies have researched the relationship between CSA and sexual abuse cognitions, despite limited clinical literature reporting that this may be a problem (e.g., Wilson & Wilson, in press). Two-hundred twenty-seven females completed revised versions of the Childhood Sexual Abuse Questionnaire the Sexual Cognitions Checklist. Results found that female CSA survivors reported more sexual abuse cognitions and greater arousal to these cognitions than those who had not experienced CSA. Results indicate that compared to women with no …

The Failure Of Breast Cancer Informed Consent Statutes, Rachael Anderson-Watts
The Failure Of Breast Cancer Informed Consent Statutes, Rachael Anderson-Watts
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Informed consent is a common law concept rooted in the idea that "[e]very human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his own body."' Its aim is to ensure that each patient gets the information she needs to meaningfully consent to medical procedures. Coming of age in the 1970s alongside other important rights movements, informed consent purported to solve medicine's paternalism: doctors too often dictating treatments rather than discussing options. Combating medical paternalism seems a worthwhile goal, given abuses in the past century, but moreover to improve everyday physician-patient encounters. …
Fear Of Crime Among Older Persons : An Exploratory Qualitative Study In Different Environments In Hong Kong, On Fung Chan
Fear Of Crime Among Older Persons : An Exploratory Qualitative Study In Different Environments In Hong Kong, On Fung Chan
Lingnan Theses
Fear of crime among various groups has long been studied in Western societies. Many studies have concluded that older persons tend to exhibit higher levels of fear of crime than other age groups even though they are generally at a lower risk of being victims of crime. However, there have been relatively few studies on fear of crime and associated reasons amongst older persons in Asian cities and Chinese societies. Moreover, most existing studies have generally utilized quantitative methods to examine the possibly causal relationships between fear of crime and its underlying factors, and subjective evaluations by older people themselves …

Information Technology Usage And Quality Of Life Among Older Persons : A Qualitative Study In Hong Kong, Wing Fung, Chad Chan
Lingnan Theses
INTRODUCTION: In this high technology era, rapid developments in information technology (IT) have the potential to transform the lives of older persons. Ageing tends to be associated with reductions in health status and resources, which can be potentially affect the adoption of new technology. However, the role of IT is becoming ever more influential in our daily living though the digital services such as email, e-banking and e-shopping. Therefore, older persons inevitably come across various IT-related products, especially computers and the Internet, in their everyday lives. Moreover, the quality of life of older persons is important and has been identified …

Recognizing Our Dangerous Gifts: Applying The Social Model To Individuals With Mental Illness, Rachel Anderson-Watts
Recognizing Our Dangerous Gifts: Applying The Social Model To Individuals With Mental Illness, Rachel Anderson-Watts
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Our society and laws allow a space for a multitude of identities and forms of expression. Many kinds of differences are legally protected in various ways, such as differences in race, religion, and gender. Sometimes protection takes the form of requiring social institutions to adapt to the unique needs of certain individuals or groups. Rights for disabled individuals, as exemplified by the Americans with Disabilities Act, rest on the principle that impairment disables because the world is structured around an incompatible model of human ability; not because of a fundamental deficit within the individual. This conception, termed the social model …
The New Role For Assurance Services In Global Commerce, Margaret M. Blair
The New Role For Assurance Services In Global Commerce, Margaret M. Blair
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In this Article we examine the rapid emergence and expansion of a private-sector compliance and enforcement infrastructure that we believe increasingly may be providing a substitute for public and legal regulatory infrastructure in global commerce, especially in developing countries where rule of law is weak and court systems are absent or inadequate. This infrastructure is provided by a proliferation of performance codes and standards, and a rapidly growing global army of privately trained and authorized inspectors and certifiers that we call the "third party assurance industry. " The growth in the third party assurance business has been phenomenal in the …

Experts, Mental States, And Acts, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This article, written for a symposium on "Guilt v. Guiltiness: Are the Right Rules for Trying Factual Innocence Inevitably the Wrong Rules for Trying Culpability?," argues that the definition of expertise in the criminal justice system, derived in the federal courts and in most states from Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals Co., should vary depending on whether the issue involved is past mental state or past conduct. While expert psychological testimony about past acts ought to be based on scientifically verifiable assertions, expert psychological testimony about subjective mental states relevant to criminal responsibility need not meet the same threshold. This …
Capitalism And The Tax System: A Search For Social Justice, Beverly I. Moran
Capitalism And The Tax System: A Search For Social Justice, Beverly I. Moran
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
America is a country founded on ideas. The Enlightenment was one set of ideas that attended our birth and one Enlightenment belief as strong today as during the revolution is our faith in capitalism and the protection of private property. Yet, the United States tax system manages to violate fundamental capitalist principles as outlined in the extensive writings of Adam Smith - the father of capitalism. Comparing Smith's vision to the current United States tax system reveals many important inconsistencies, particularly the current penchant for simultaneously taxing wages while exempting (or delaying) taxes on wealth and wealth appreciation. The article …

Federal regulations are among the most important and widely used tools for implementing the laws of the land – affecting the food we eat, the air we breathe, the safety of consumer products, the quality of the workplace, the soundness of our financial institutions, the smooth operation of our businesses, and much more. Despite the central role of rulemaking in executing public policy, both regulated entities (especially small businesses) and the general public find it extremely difficult to follow the regulatory process; actively participating in it is even harder.
E-rulemaking is the use of technology (particularly, computers and the World …

Welfare, Privacy, And Feminism, Michele E. Gilman
Welfare, Privacy, And Feminism, Michele E. Gilman
University of Baltimore Law Forum
Feminism has long been concerned with privacy. Second-wave feminists assailed the divide between the public and the private spheres that trapped women in the home, excluded them from the workforce, and subjected them to domestic abuse. Second-wave feminists also argued in favor of a sphere of privacy that would allow women to make reproductive choices without state interference. These were powerful critiques of existing power structures, but they tended to overlook the experiences of poor women. As a condition of receiving welfare benefits, poor women have been subjected to drug tests, and they continue to face unannounced home inspections by …

Delineation Of Malignant Areas In Histological Images Of Head -Neck Cancer, Mutlu Mete
Delineation Of Malignant Areas In Histological Images Of Head -Neck Cancer, Mutlu Mete
Theses and Dissertations
Histopathology remains one of the most critical steps in diagnosis and treatment of any kind of cancer. Recently, the improvements in imaging techniques led to the discovery of virtual histological slides, which in fact are high resolution images with a resolution of 0.25 μm/pixel. These images enabled researchers to investigate cancer cell morphologies at the finest level. Traditionally, assessment of tumor margins is done manually by a histopathologist. The procedure requires histological processing of the tumor and examining multiple tissue sections. The number of sections varies based on the size, location, and type of tumor. The recognition of cancer areas …

Evaluating Cancer Protein Identification From Mass Spectroscopy Data, Philip Hudson Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Early detection of ovarian cancer substantially increases patient survivability. Mass spectrometry data sets for the purpose of research into early detection methods have been funded by the National Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Program, gynecologic oncology clinic at Northwestern University Chicago IL, USA. Researchers have applied different machine learning methods for classification on several of the spectra data sets, (including the most recent produced on an ABI Hybrid Pulsar QqTOF instrument (Q-Star) mass spectrometer) for the purpose of predicting cancer. While identification of the proteins or metabolites within these spectra is not required for early detection, it would give a better …

Growing Up Separate: An Oral History Of The College Educational And Career Outcomes Of Black Graduates From A Rural, Segregated Public High School From 1954 To 1969, George Ann Newsome Stallings
Theses and Dissertations
Using an oral history format, the qualitative study of graduates from Sparkman Training School, an all-Black small, rural school in Sparkman, Arkansas, sought to identify factors evident in this segregated school that enhanced the chances for those graduates in becoming successful in college. The four research questions of the study sought factors in the segregated experience that motivated participants to attend college, helped prepare them for college, contributed to their academic persistence to college graduation, and contributed to a successful collegiate experience. Seven former teachers and 24 of the 35 identified college graduates from 1954 to the school’s closing in …
