Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer
Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer
All ETDs from UAB
Objective: Previously we have shown that total free living energy expenditure (TEE) and greater fitness was associated with reduced long term weight gain and improved ability to estimate TEE from physical activity (PA) questionnaires. In the current study, it is hypothesized that women will overestimate questionnaire self reported energy expenditure (QEE). Furthermore, weight reduced women who exercise train will be better able to estimate TEE compared to weight reduced women who do not exercise train. Design: The participants consisted of 35 European American (EA) and 49 African American (AA) pre-menopausal women. These women were evaluated while overweight and when weight …

Too White To Be Regarded As Aborigines: An Historical Analysis Of Policies For The Protection Of Aborigines And The Assimilation Of Aborigines Of Mixed Descent, And The Role Of Chief Protectors Of Aborigines In The Formulation And Implementation Of Those Policies, In Western Australia From 1898 To 1940, Derrick Tomlinson
Theses
For much of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries, public policies for Western Australia’s Indigenous peoples were guided by beliefs that they were remnants of a race in terminal decline and that a public duty existed to protect and preserve them. If their extinction was unavoidable, the public duty was to ease their passing. The Aborigines Act 1905 vested the Chief Protector of Aborigines (after 1936 the Commissioner for Native Affairs), with lawful responsibility for the pursuit of that duty. All Aborigines caught by the terms of the Act, in particular Aboriginal children under the age …

Do Norms Still Matter? The Corrosive Effects Of Globalization On The Vitality Of Norms, Patrick J. Keenan
Do Norms Still Matter? The Corrosive Effects Of Globalization On The Vitality Of Norms, Patrick J. Keenan
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Why does the process of globalization undermine the power of social norms to regulate behavior? Norms are the social regularities that shape individual behavior and help to create vibrant--or dysfunctional--communities. Most theories of norms do not account for the many ways that globalization affects the foundations of norms. This Article fills the gap by developing a more robust theory of the informal regulation of behavior that considers the ways that the process of globalization can interfere with the creation of norms and erode their power.
Drawing on behavioral economics, sociology, and criminology, the theory proposed in this Article contains three …
Trade, Empires, And Subjects--China-Africa Trade, Uche E. Ofodile
Trade, Empires, And Subjects--China-Africa Trade, Uche E. Ofodile
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Since 2000, the interest of the People's Republic of China (China) in Africa has grown steadily. Trade between China and Africa has grown exponentially. China-Africa trade volume increased from $10 billion to $18 billion between 2000 and 2003. In 2005, total trade between Africa and China surged to $40 billion, and in 2006 China-Africa trade was valued at $55.5 billion. A third of China's crude oil imports come from Africa. In the West, reaction to China's involvement in Africa has bordered on suspicion and paranoia. Policy makers and analysts are concerned that China could gain control over Africa's vast and …
Tissue Tug-Of-War: A Comparison Of International And U.S. Perspectives On The Regulation Of Human Tissue Banks, Lisa C. Edwards
Tissue Tug-Of-War: A Comparison Of International And U.S. Perspectives On The Regulation Of Human Tissue Banks, Lisa C. Edwards
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Every day in the United States and around the world, patients and research participants at hospitals and doctors' offices give biological samples, whether in the form of surgically removed cancer tissue or a routine blood sample. Many of these patients are entirely unaware that their tissues were not thrown out as hazardous waste, and instead used by scientists for the development of new drugs and therapies. The courts in the United States in Moore v. Regents of the University of California, Greenberg v. Miami Children's Hospital Research Institute, and most recently Washington University v. Catalona have determined that a patient …
Gender Justice Through Public Interest Litigation: Case Studies From India, Avani M. Sood
Gender Justice Through Public Interest Litigation: Case Studies From India, Avani M. Sood
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article examines the application of the Supreme Court of India's enterprising Public Interest Litigation (PIL) mechanism to a subject of compelling global concern: violations of women's rights. India is currently receiving much international attention for its dynamism and innovation on various fronts, yet the country also remains steeped in centuries-old norms and conventions. This tension is reflected in the decisions of the Supreme Court, which has assumed an active role in enforcing women's rights through PIL but is sometimes limited in this regard by the complex cultural context in which it operates. Based on an analysis of Indian constitutional …
Comparative Models Of Reporting Mechanisms On The Status Of Trafficking In Human Beings, Mohamed Y. Mattar
Comparative Models Of Reporting Mechanisms On The Status Of Trafficking In Human Beings, Mohamed Y. Mattar
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
A comprehensive approach to combating trafficking in human beings requires precise knowledge of the scope of the problem and constant evaluation of government responses. Reporting on the status of human trafficking achieves both goals. This Article is designed to examine the various human trafficking reporting mechanisms, including reports that states are required to submit to the United Nations as well as national reports whereby governments engage in a process of self-assessment. Comparative models from Europe and the United States will be examined. The Article analyzes reports released by interministerial task forces as well as congressional hearings held on progress made …

Development And Reform Of The Iraqi Police Forces, C. Anthony Pfaff Dr.
Development And Reform Of The Iraqi Police Forces, C. Anthony Pfaff Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Despite 4 years of millions of dollars in aid, equipment, education, and advisors, Iraqi police force development lags far behind the military. Numerous reasons are offered to account for this gap: corrupt practices left over from the previous regime, infiltration by militias, weak leadership, competition by better armed and organized criminal and militant groups, and so on. However, the military is also subject to these same influences, thus none of these explanations by themselves or in combination are satisfactory. The author argues that the poor political and security environment impacts social, political, and cultural factors in ways that are predictable, …
A Comparison Of Oral Motor And Production Training For Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Karen Forrest, Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel
A Comparison Of Oral Motor And Production Training For Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Karen Forrest, Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel
Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Despite the many debates about the usefulness of nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs) in the treatment of speech disorders, few controlled experiments have evaluated their efficacy in the remediation of phonological/articulatory disorders (PADs). More importantly, the relative effect of NSOMEs compared with traditional production treatment (PT) has not been established. The current study employed an alternating treatment design to evaluate changes in production of sounds targeted by NSOMEs and PT in nine children with PAD. Each subject received treatment on two linguistically distinct sounds in which one sound was treated with NSOMEs and the second sound was targeted with PT. …
Rethinking The Role Of Clinical Trial Data In International Intellectual Property Law: The Case For A Public Goods Approach. Law: From Private To Public Good?, Jerome Reichman
The Honorable Helen Wilson Nies Memorial Lecture
Prof. Reichman describes the growth and consequences of new intellectual property rights given to pharmaceutical developers, and it advocates treating clinical trials as a public good. Although the soaring cost of clinical trials is well known and discussed, too little attention is given to the underlying rationale for allowing drug developers to recoup their costs through the new intellectual property rights provided in multilateral, regional, and bilateral agreements. Known in the US as 'market exclusivity' and in Europe as 'data exclusivity,' these rights prohibit would-be generic producers from obtaining regulatory approval based on the original producers’ undisclosed test data.

Researching African Women And Gender Studies: New Social Science Perspectives, Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Josephine Beoku-Betts, Mary J. Osirim
Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Research on African women and gender studies has grown substantially to a position where African-centered gender theories and praxis contribute to theorizing on global feminist scholarship. Africanist scholars in this field have explored new areas such as transnational and multiracial feminisms, both of which address the complex and interlocking conditions that impact women's lives and produce oppression, opportunity and privilege. In addition, emergent African-centered research on women and gender explores those critical areas of research frequently addressed in the global North which have historically been ignored or marginalized in the African context such as family, work, social and political movements, …

Microbial Community Structure Dynamics In Ohio River Sediments During Reductive Dechlorination Of Pcbs, Andres Enrique Nunez
Microbial Community Structure Dynamics In Ohio River Sediments During Reductive Dechlorination Of Pcbs, Andres Enrique Nunez
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The entire stretch of the Ohio River is under fish consumption advisories due to contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, natural attenuation and biostimulation of PCBs and microbial communities responsible for PCB transformations were investigated in Ohio River sediments.
Natural attenuation of PCBs was negligible in sediments, which was likely attributed to low temperature conditions during most of the year, as well as low amounts of available nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon. Moreover, surface sediments were relatively oxidized, as indicated by the prevalence of aerobic bacteria such as beta- Proteobacteria, alpha-Proteobacteria, Sphingobacteria, and Nitrospira in 16S rRNA sediment …
Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz
Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Marcel Proust wrote “What we call our future is the shadow that our past projects in front of us.” For the federal documents universe, this is only partially correct. We should attend more to how it has felt to be documents librarians, instead of trying to reconcile the past with all those wishful digital delivery monologues. A lack of courage on our part now—or relying solely upon that handy silhouette—will jeopardize the prospect of tomorrow's federal documents and their use. That absence of daring, or the use of that crutch, will guarantee that whatever results we are handed in our …
Getting Past Conflict Resolution: A Complexity View Of Conflict, Leticia Andrade, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon
Getting Past Conflict Resolution: A Complexity View Of Conflict, Leticia Andrade, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The traditional view of conflict, as a problematic condition always requiring reduction or elimination and whose conditions or outcomes can be predicted, is incompatible with a complex adaptive systems view of organizations. Thus, conventional approaches to reducing conflict are often futile because the fundamental properties of complex adaptive systems are the source of much organizational ‘conflict.’ In this paper we offer an alternative view of conflict as pattern fluctuations in complex adaptive systems. Rather than needing reduction or elimination, conflict is the fuel that drives system growth and enables learning and adaptive behaviors, making innovation possible. Instead of focusing on …
Canine Vector-Borne Diseases In Brazil [Review], Filipe Dantas-Torres
Canine Vector-Borne Diseases In Brazil [Review], Filipe Dantas-Torres
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are highly prevalent in Brazil and represent a challenge to veterinarians and public health workers, since some diseases are of great zoonotic potential. Dogs are affected by many protozoa (e.g. Babesia vogeli, Leishmania infantum, and Trypanosoma cruzi), bacteria (e.g. Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis), and helminths (e.g. Dirofilaria immitis and Dipylidium caninum) that are transmitted by a diverse range of arthropod vectors, including ticks, fleas, lice, triatomines, mosquitoes, tabanids, and phlebotomine sand flies. This article focuses on several aspects (etiology, transmission, distribution, prevalence, risk factors, diagnosis, control, prevention, and public health …
A Synopsis Of Nebraska Grasshopper Distributions, Mathew L. Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright
A Synopsis Of Nebraska Grasshopper Distributions, Mathew L. Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Between 2005 and 2007, 656 new county records and eight new state records were obtained for Nebraska’s short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae and Romaleidae). This represents an increase of 30% in the known grasshopper county records in Nebraska. Based on the large number of new distribution records, it appears that the previous distributions of Nebraska’s grasshoppers greatly underestimated the actual distributions. The new grasshopper state records were: Boopedon gracile, Chloealtis abdominalis, Encoptolophus subgracilis, Melanoplus bispinosus, Melanoplus borealis, Melanoplus punctulatus, Paratylotropidia brunneri, and Psinidia fenestralis were obtained. These new records will aid in both grasshopper monitoring for pest outbreaks and in conservation of …

Simulations With Elaborated Worked Example Modeling: Beneficial Effects On Schema Acquisition, Debra K. Meier, Karl J. Reinhard, David O. Carter, David W. Brooks
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Worked examples have been effective in enhancing learning outcomes, especially with novice learners. Most of this research has been conducted in laboratory settings. This study examined the impact of embedding elaborated worked example modeling in a computer simulation practice activity on learning achievement among 39 undergraduate students within a classroom environment. The students from one introductory forensic science course were randomly assigned to one of two groups that worked through computer-based simulations containing worked example modeling conditions presented in varied order. The computer software administered the modeled simulations, prior knowledge test, pretest, posttests, and a second domain test. Findings from …
