Periplasmic Phosphorylation Of Lipid A Is Linked To The Synthesis Of Undecaprenyl Phosphate, Thierry Touzé, An X. Tran, Jessica V. Hankins, Dominique Mengin-Lecreulx, M. Stephen Trent Jan 2008

Periplasmic Phosphorylation Of Lipid A Is Linked To The Synthesis Of Undecaprenyl Phosphate, Thierry Touzé, An X. Tran, Jessica V. Hankins, Dominique Mengin-Lecreulx, M. Stephen Trent

ETSU Faculty Works

One-third of the lipid A found in the Escherichia coli outer membrane contains an unsubstituted diphosphate unit at position 1 (lipid A 1-diphosphate). We now report an inner membrane enzyme, LpxT (YeiU), which specifically transfers a phosphate group to lipid A, forming the 1-diphosphate species. 32P-labelled lipid A obtained from lpxT mutants do not produce lipid A 1-diphosphate. In vitro assays with Kdo2-[4′- 32P]lipid A as the acceptor shows that LpxT uses undecaprenyl pyrophosphate as the substrate donor. Inhibition of lipid A 1-diphosphate formation in wild-type bacteria was demonstrated by sequestering undecaprenyl pyrophosphate with the cyclic polypeptide antibiotic bacitracin, providing …

The Influence Of Veterinary Schools On The Veterinary Labor Market, Kyle Bosh Jan 2008

The Influence Of Veterinary Schools On The Veterinary Labor Market, Kyle Bosh

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Problem Statement:

Does the presence of a veterinary school in a state influence the supply of veterinarians practicing in that state? Citizens and animals in states without a veterinary school are at a disadvantage if the presence of a veterinary school significantly improves public health and access to medical services in those states that have a veterinary school.

Research Strategy:

The unit of analysis in this study is 50 states and the District of Columbia. The study is designed as a cross-sectional analysis of 2006 pet, 2002 livestock, 2006 human, labor, and economic data. The study uses simultaneous equations to …

Imagining Gun Control In America: Understanding The Remainder Problem Article And Essay, Nicholas J. Johnson Jan 2008

Imagining Gun Control In America: Understanding The Remainder Problem Article And Essay, Nicholas J. Johnson

Faculty Scholarship

Gun control in the United States generally has meant some type of supply regulation. Supply restrictions ranging from one-gun-a-month schemes to flat gun bans cannot work without a willingness and ability to reduce total inventory to levels approaching zero ("the supply-side ideal"). This is an impossible feat in a country that already has 300 million guns tightly held by people who think they are uniquely important tools. The average defiance ratio in places that have attempted gun confiscation and registration is 2.6 illegal guns for every legal one. In many countries defiance is far higher. None of those countries has …

Concentration-Dependent Degradation Of Three Termiticides In Soil Under Laboratory Conditions And Their Bioavailability To Eastern Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Raj K. Saran, Shripat T. Kamble Jan 2008

Concentration-Dependent Degradation Of Three Termiticides In Soil Under Laboratory Conditions And Their Bioavailability To Eastern Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Raj K. Saran, Shripat T. Kamble

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Degradation and bioavailability of imidacloprid, fipronil, and bifenthrin applied at label rates ([AI], wt:wt in soil) in the loamy soil of Nebraska were determined over a 6-mo duration. Based on the calculated half-lives of the three termiticides, it was concluded that the degradation rate was lowest when a termiticide was applied at the highest label rate. Bioassays of Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) conducted at 8, 31, 65, 90, 135, 160, and 180 d posttreatment showed an inverse relationship between the LT90 values and the variable concentrations. At day 180, exposures to all the termiticide-treated soil samples (concentration × …

Inheritance Of Cry1f Resistance In Laboratory-Selected European Corn Borer And Its Survival On Transgenic Corn Expressing The Cry1f Toxin, E. J. G. Pereira, N. P. Storer, Blair D. Siegfried Jan 2008

Inheritance Of Cry1f Resistance In Laboratory-Selected European Corn Borer And Its Survival On Transgenic Corn Expressing The Cry1f Toxin, E. J. G. Pereira, N. P. Storer, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A major assumption of the high-dose/refuge strategy proposed for insect resistance management strategies for transgenic crop plants that express toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis is that resistance traits that evolve in pest species will be recessive. The inheritance of Cry1F resistance and larval survival on commercially available Cry1F corn hybrids were determined in a laboratory-selected strain of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hu¨ bner), displaying more than 3000-fold resistance to Cry1F. Concentration-response bioassays of reciprocal parental crosses indicated that the resistance is autosomal and recessive. Bioassays of the backcross of the F1 generation with the selected strain were consistent with …

Invasion Of Europe By The Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera: Multiple Transatlantic Introductions With Various Reductions Of Genetic Diversity, M. Ciosi, Nicholas Miller, R. Giordano, A. Estoup, T. Guillemaud, S. Kim Jan 2008

Invasion Of Europe By The Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera: Multiple Transatlantic Introductions With Various Reductions Of Genetic Diversity, M. Ciosi, Nicholas Miller, R. Giordano, A. Estoup, T. Guillemaud, S. Kim

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The early stages of invasion involve demographic bottlenecks that may result in lower genetic variation in introduced populations as compared to source population/s. Low genetic variability may decrease the adaptive potential of such populations in their new environments. Previous population genetic studies of invasive species have reported varying levels of losses of genetic variability in comparisons of source and invasive populations. However, intraspecific comparisons are required to assess more thoroughly the repeatability of genetic consequences of colonization events. Descriptions of invasive species for which multiple introductions from a single source population have been demonstrated may be particularly informative. The western …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Eleven spectral vegetation indices that emphasize foliar plant pigments were calculated using airborne hyperspectral imagery and evaluated in 2004 and 2005 for their ability to detect experimental plots of corn manually inoculated with Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) neonate larvae. Manual inoculations were timed to simulate infestation of corn, Zea mays L., by first and second fiights of adult O. nubilalis. The ability of spectral vegetation indices to detect O. nubilalis-inoculated plots improved as the growing season progressed, with multiple spectral vegetation indices able to identify infested plots in late August and early September. Our findings also indicate that for …

Agroecossistemas Orizícolas Irrigados: Insetos-Praga, Imimigos Naturais E Manejo Integrado, Leila Lucia Fritz, Elvis Arden Heinrichs, Marciele Pandolfo, Silvia Martins De Salles, Jaime Vargas De Oliveira, Lidia Mariana Fiuza

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Payday Lending: Can "Reputable" Banks End Cycles Of Debt?, Michael Kenneth Jan 2008

Payday Lending: Can "Reputable" Banks End Cycles Of Debt?, Michael Kenneth

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Article argues that banks, which face both regulatory and public pressures to maintain good practices, should be "invited" to take over the industry. Banks can not only offer lower interest rates than payday lenders, but they can also place limitations on the use of payday loans that discourage repeat borrowing without sacrificing the convenience that attracts customers to payday loans.

Writing Resistance Into International Law, Ruth Buchanan Jan 2008

Writing Resistance Into International Law, Ruth Buchanan

All Papers

This essay considers the problem of theorizing resistance within international law through a close reading of two recent contributions to the TWAIL literature. It is concerned less with their critiques of contemporary developments, than with how these scholars map the possible spaces for resistance of third world states and peoples to international legal institutions and discourses. Do they argue that third world resistance has the potential to transform international law, and move us in the direction of a more just international order? If so, how is that process of change envisioned? While the answers to these questions are, not surprisingly, …

The purpose of this project was to determine what social and communication patterns could be detected early in infants who are later diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Investigators carried out a qualitative analysis collecting descriptive data through retrospective video analysis addressing two main areas of development in infants later diagnosed with ASD: (a) social interactions, and (b) communication and language development. The intent of this research project was to highlight specific social communication behaviors: (1) eye gaze, (2) response to name, (3) communicative forms (both vocalizations and gestures), and (4) communicative intent & function (behavior regulations, social interaction, …

Economic Systems In Africa, Michael Kevane Jan 2008

Economic Systems In Africa, Michael Kevane

Economics

An enormous variety of experiences and possibilities characterized African economic systems at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Small village communities continued to till the soil and raise goats, sheep, cows, and chickens using the same techniques of their grandfathers, renewing all the while traditions of social solidarity and hospitality that have characterized rural Africa for centuries.Overhead, however, multinational corporations owned and operated by African nationals organized transcontinental air travel, microwave and satellite transmissions, and cell phone networks. Africa globalized with the rest of the world, though in different ways. Exports of goods and services stagnated even as migration generated new …
