An Indistinct Earth: Stories, Stephen Janes Jan 2008

An Indistinct Earth: Stories, Stephen Janes

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

To write constitutes a supreme faith. Not merely in the idea of oneself as a writer, but also in the subject and in the audience. When something is put out into the universe, it floats there. If no one grabs it, it stays floating. Nabokov writes, "A work of art has no importance whatever to society. It is only important to the individual" (Nabokov, 22). It is the individual that makes up society. Therefore, art that does not touch one man cannot touch all men. The idea of a perfect audience or a perfect listener is comparable for man's search …

Middle School Teacher Acceptance Of Interventions For Adhd, Linda Latsko Castenova Jan 2008

Middle School Teacher Acceptance Of Interventions For Adhd, Linda Latsko Castenova

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The study explored the relationship between middle school teacher knowledge of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), their knowledge of common interventions for ADHD, and their perception of treatment acceptability. The study also investigated teacher characteristics and their relationship to teacher knowledge of ADHD and their ratings of acceptability of interventions. Fifty-eight general education middle school teachers completed a survey containing demographic information, an ADHD knowledge scale, and a survey on interventions for students with ADHD. Results indicated that teachers scored an average of 58% correct on the Knowledge of Attention Deficit Disorders Scale (KADDS), scoring significantly higher on the Symptoms/Diagnosis subscale compared …

Biographical Study Of A Woman With Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum: A Story Of Hope And Inspiration, Robin Comerford

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

School psychologists must be knowledgeable about brain development to help students in their care. The human brain has the capability to determine a person's happiness, effectiveness, and positive relationships with others. This biographical study examined how a young woman diagnosed with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC) and agenesis of the cerebellum came to live a productive, happy life. ACC is a low incidence form of brain damage marked by inconsistent behavioral and emotional manifestations throughout the lifespan. Personal life artifacts, school documents, and medical records were used to help organize her life experiences in the form of a narrative …

Construction Of The Structured Assessment Of Functioning And Effectiveness-Revised (Safe-R) : Validation Against The Million Adolescent Clinical Inventory (Maci) And Against Other Clinical Measures In An Adolescent Residential Setting, John Girard Kuna Jan 2008

Construction Of The Structured Assessment Of Functioning And Effectiveness-Revised (Safe-R) : Validation Against The Million Adolescent Clinical Inventory (Maci) And Against Other Clinical Measures In An Adolescent Residential Setting, John Girard Kuna

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Adolescents present with various emotional and mental health problems when admitted to residential settings. Such problems increase the probability that these clients represent a safety risk to themselves, to peers and to treatment staff. Psychometric devices can best meet the complex needs for assessment when such instruments are easily administered, well constructed, and diagnostically accurate. However, the usage of psychological assessment instruments labors under growing restrictions by time limited health care delivery systems. With a concerted effort, the field of psychology must respond with a sense of advocacy and a realistic explanation for the value and utility of assessments devices. …

A Survey Of Pennsylvania School Psychologists' Training, Knowledge And Evaluation Practice For Assessing And Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders, Loren M. Pearson

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The main purpose of this research was to survey Pennsylvania school psychologists regarding their training, knowledge and evaluation practices when assessing and diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A 65 question electronic survey focusing on four areas: A) training, B) knowledge, C) current practice and D) demographic information, was distributed to 908 certified school psychologists in Pennsylvania and completed by 243 respondents. Results found that school psychologists in Pennsylvania play a key role with assessment and diagnosis of ASD, yet have limited formal training in important aspects of ASD. Doctoral level school psychologists and school psychologists with the greatest number of …

Examination Of Health Adherence Behaviors And Cognitive Distortions In Patients With Chronic Illness , Clint C. Stankiewicz Jan 2008

Examination Of Health Adherence Behaviors And Cognitive Distortions In Patients With Chronic Illness , Clint C. Stankiewicz

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The relationship between health adherence behaviors and cognitive distortions among patients with chronic illness were investigated. One-hundred eleven participants from two outpatient medical clinics were administered the Health Adherence Behavior Inventory (HABIT) and the Inventory for Cognitive Distortions (lCD), and the Health Adherence Behavior Survey was utilized to obtain demographic information. Results indicated participants who had a thinking style characterized by the use of cognitive distortions tended to engage in fewer health promoting behaviors. This finding was consistent with the predicted hypothesis. In fact, a significant correlation at the .05 level of -.173 was found between the ICD and the …

Effects Of Statin Medications On Health Related Behaviors, Stephen M. Timchack Jan 2008

Effects Of Statin Medications On Health Related Behaviors, Stephen M. Timchack

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The current study focuses on the psychological effects of statin medications. Specifically, this study examines the health related beliefs and behaviors that may be altered by the consumption of this fast acting class of life saving drugs. Although the statin class of medication generally produces favorable physiological results, as evidenced by reduced levels of serum cholesterol, and in some case increases in high density lipoproteins, the health related belief system and heath related behaviors may actually be altered in a negative fashion by engendering a sense of overconfidence; this in turn may alter beliefs and diminish the importance of adhering …

Evaluation Of The Construct And Predictive Validity Of A Resiliency Matrix, Bobby R. Van Divner Jan 2008

Evaluation Of The Construct And Predictive Validity Of A Resiliency Matrix, Bobby R. Van Divner

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Following a comprehensive review of the literature, the present study undertook the development and evaluation of a Resiliency Matrix to assess for the presence of protective and vulnerability factors. The factors, which emerged from the literature review, to promote the expression of resiliency were organized and operationalized into a Resiliency Matrix. Resiliency Matrix Protective Factor Composite scores were evaluated for construct validity through correlations with the Resiliency Scale of the BASC-2 and BASC-2 Depression T-scores, a measure of psychopathology. Resiliency Matrix Protective Factor Composite scores were then evaluated for predictive validity against measures of successful academic and behavioral adjustment to …

Understanding The Relationship Between The Diligence Inventory-Higher Education Edition And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator In The Admission Of College Students To An Orthopaedics-Based Honors Program, Michael A. Harstine Jan 2008

Understanding The Relationship Between The Diligence Inventory-Higher Education Edition And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator In The Admission Of College Students To An Orthopaedics-Based Honors Program, Michael A. Harstine

Dissertations

Problem. The Orthopaedic Scholar Institute (OSI) Team realized its need for a more objective selection and admission process that, as much as possible, quantified the characteristics desired in OSI students rather than relying solely on referral perception, intuition, and an interview, but it did not have a clear method or approach to do so. Administering standardized inventories that highlighted these desired characteristics and aided in the selection and admission process seemed to be an objective approach to obtain more quantifiable data. The problem for my study was, therefore, whether the Myers- Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) alone could measure a student’s …

A Different Departure: A Reply To Shany's "Redrawing Maps, Manipulating Demographics: On Exchange Of Populated Territories And Self-Determination", Timothy W. Waters Jan 2008

A Different Departure: A Reply To Shany's "Redrawing Maps, Manipulating Demographics: On Exchange Of Populated Territories And Self-Determination", Timothy W. Waters

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Anyone reading Yuval Shany's response to my article, "The Blessing of Departure -- Exchange of Populated Territories: The Lieberman Plan as an Abstract Exercise in Demographic Transformation," would hardly characterize it as "agreement." In part this is because Shany builds his case by assuming I am saying something about self-determination that misses -- at least misplaces -- my real point. This is unfortunate, both as it masks the fact that Shany and I actually agree transfers can be legal, and it distracts attention from the points of real, substantive disagreement. The misreading is not an accident, rather the product of …

The Temporal Dimension Of Land Pollution: Another Perspective On Applying The Breaking The Logjam Principles To Waste Management, John S. Applegate Jan 2008

The Temporal Dimension Of Land Pollution: Another Perspective On Applying The Breaking The Logjam Principles To Waste Management, John S. Applegate

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Unlike air and water pollution, pollution from dangerous solid and liquid wastes on land remains a relatively concentrated, active hazard for long periods of time. Uncontrolled, land pollution moves through the environment slowly and often without significant diminution of toxicity. Persistence, in fact, is often regarded as the defining quality of dangerous land pollutants. Hazardous and nuclear waste regulation is very much concerned with the problem of maintaining the isolation of solid and liquid materials over decades, centuries, and even millennia, and, the author argues, there is good reason to believe that waste management practices and institutions are not well …

Guarding Life's Dark Secrets: Legal And Social Controls Over Reputation, Propriety, And Privacy Book Review, Alex Lubin Jan 2008

Guarding Life's Dark Secrets: Legal And Social Controls Over Reputation, Propriety, And Privacy Book Review, Alex Lubin

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

This short but well-researched and well-written book adds to the existing literature about the origins of the Cold War national security state and about the link between international crisis and domestic surveillance. The book confirms previous portraits of FDR as a president with a somewhat relaxed view of civil liberties, and it shows compellingly how Hoover perfected the use of criminal investigations, launched to find evidence of unlawful activities and to gather, file, and disseminate political and other forms of noncriminal intelligence. It therefore fills a void in the scholarship on the FBI, which has tended to focus on the …

On The Internal Border: Colonial Difference, The Cold War, And The Locations Of "Underdevelopment", Alyosha Goldstein Jan 2008

On The Internal Border: Colonial Difference, The Cold War, And The Locations Of "Underdevelopment", Alyosha Goldstein

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1962, the recently established Peace Corps announced plans for an intensive field training initiative that would acclimate the agency's burgeoning multitude of volunteers to the conditions of poverty in "underdeveloped" countries and immerse them in "foreign" cultures ostensibly similar to where they would be later stationed. This training was designed to be "as realistic as possible, to give volunteers a 'feel' of the situation they will face." With this purpose in mind, the Second Annual Report of the Peace Corps recounted, "Trainees bound for social work in Colombian city slums were given on-the-job training in New York City's Spanish …

Lessons From The Emu For Asian Regional Integration, Sarkis Joseph Khoury, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2008

Lessons From The Emu For Asian Regional Integration, Sarkis Joseph Khoury, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Critical costs and benefits of creating an EMU-like structure in Asia are identified. Analyzing the EU, we pay particular attention to two kinds of economic benefits and costs that do not appear much in conventional economic analysis. First, there are benefits and costs of harmonization in different areas including the monetary area. Second, giving up sovereignty within a policy area can provide many countries with a kind of insurance against domestic institutional, legal, and political weaknesses. Although we emphasize economic arguments it is necessary to recognize that the EU is very much a politically motivated project. Politics may well be …

Government Data Mining: The Need For A Legal Framework, Fred H. Cate Jan 2008

Government Data Mining: The Need For A Legal Framework, Fred H. Cate

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The article examines the government's growing appetite for collecting personal data. Often justified on the basis of protecting national security, government data mining programs sweep up data collected through hundreds of regulatory and administrative programs, and combine them with huge datasets obtained from industry. The result is an aggregation of personal data - the "digital footprints" of individual lives - never before seen. These data warehouses are then used to determine who can work and participate in Social Security programs, who can board airplanes and enter government buildings, and who is likely to pose a threat in the future, even …

Of Persons And The Criminal Law: (Second Tier) Personhood As A Prerequisite For Victimhood, Luis E. Chiesa

Journal Articles

This article examines the implications of the Michael Vick case for the criminal law in general and for the law of victimhood in particular. It takes as its point of departure the NFL star's agreement to pay close to one million dollars to the various entities that assumed custody of the pit bulls in order to "make restitution for the full amount of the costs associated with the disposition of all dogs" that were involved in his illegal operation. According to the agreement, the authority to order such payments stems from 18 U.S.C. ý 3663, which allows for the issuance …
