Investigating Community Factors As Predictors Of Rural 11th-Grade Agricultural Science Students’ Choice Of Careers In Agriculture, Omolola A. Adedokun, Mark Balschweid

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This study investigates the links between community contexts/factors and rural 11th-grade agricultural science students’ choice of careers in agriculture. A logistic regression model was developed and tested to examine the extent to which nine measures of community contexts (i.e., membership in FFA, membership in 4-H, community attachment, community satisfaction, length of residency in the community, positive perception of local community, preference for residing close to nature, and participation in volunteer activities) influence the odds of a student choosing a career in agriculture. The results show that the major community factors influencing the choice of agriculture related careers are membership in …

The Impact Of A Home-Based Intervention Program On Maternal Reflective Functioning In First-Time Mothers, Maia Rebecca Miller Jan 2008

The Impact Of A Home-Based Intervention Program On Maternal Reflective Functioning In First-Time Mothers, Maia Rebecca Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The present study investigates the impact of "Minding the Baby," a home-based intervention program, on maternal reflective functioning (RF). It was hypothesized that the reflective capacity of mothers who received the MTB intervention would increase over the course of the study, and that this increase would be reflected in the quality of their responses to clinical interviews administered before and after birth. The guiding premise of the intervention was that helping mothers develop a reflective stance would enable them to become more regulating, sensitive, and autonomy-promoting caregivers and thus positively affect a range of developmental outcomes in their infants.

The Phenomenon Of Amoralism: An Investigation Of The Cognitive And Emotive Roots, Andrei G. Zavaliy Jan 2008

The Phenomenon Of Amoralism: An Investigation Of The Cognitive And Emotive Roots, Andrei G. Zavaliy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

An amoralist is defined as a person who rejects the claims of moral reasons to special authority, and systematically acts without regard to the generally accepted moral standards. A psychopath can be seen as a paradigm case of an extreme amoralist, although the less severe cases of selective amoralists are considered. The research into the typical behavioral pattern, motivational structure, and the value system of psychopaths can shed light on at least three aspects related to the analysis of the moral agency. First, it can help elucidating the emotive and cognitive conditions necessary for moral performance. Secondly, it can provide …

Essays On Dynamics Of Financial Markets, Esin Cakan Jan 2008

Essays On Dynamics Of Financial Markets, Esin Cakan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this study, the effects of different macroeconomic news on stock markets and different stock market co-movements are investigated. Impacts of good and bad macroeconomic news announcement surprises on the mean and conditional volatility of U.S. daily equity and Treasury bond market returns during economic recessions and expansions are examined. By jointly modeling returns and volatilities using a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models, it is found that surprise in unemployment news has no impact on stock returns during business cycles. On the other hand, the results indicate a significantly positive relation between the short term (long term) bond prices …

Characterization Of The Lipopolysaccharide Binding Site On The Plasma Protein High Molecular Weight Kininogen, Ryan Cory Perkins Jan 2008

Characterization Of The Lipopolysaccharide Binding Site On The Plasma Protein High Molecular Weight Kininogen, Ryan Cory Perkins

Honors Theses

Bradykinin (BK) participates in the control of local blood flow and blood pressure by causing vascular hyperemia and vascular inflammation. The Bradykinin generating pathway of human plasma consists of prolylcarboxypeptidase (PRCP), prekallikrein (PK), and high molecular weight kininogen (HK). When the complex of HK-PK assembles on endothelial cells or an artificial negatively charged surface, PK is immediately converted to kallikrein by the enzyme PRCP. The formed kallikrein then autodigests HK to liberate BK. The BK that is formed then plays an important role in vascular permeability by stimulating constitutive Bradykinin B2 and inducible B1 receptors to release prostacyclin and nitric …

The Construction Of Womanhood And Race In Novels By Caroline Lee Hentz And Augusta Jane Evans, Elizabeth L. Oliphant Jan 2008

The Construction Of Womanhood And Race In Novels By Caroline Lee Hentz And Augusta Jane Evans, Elizabeth L. Oliphant

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the development of racial and gender stereotypes in four novels: Caroline Lee Hentz’s Eoline and The Planter’s Northern Bride, and Augusta Jane Evans’s Beulah and Macaria. In identifying the formation of these stereotypes, this paper suggests that Hentz and Evans were contributing to the formation of Southern identity, and that their works were at the crux of the formation of a Southern social construct.

Optimization Studies Of The Important Drug Lead Kahalalide F Which Acts On A Novel Cancer Target Rps25, Kully Lynn Woodruff

Honors Theses

Kahalalide F (KF, 1) is the largest and most biologically active cyclic peptide of the naturally occurring kahalalide family of depsipeptides. Previous evaluations of the compound have shown significant in vitro and in vivo activity against various forms of cancer. KF has been investigated in phase I clinical trials and is being evaluated in phase II clinical studies. The objective of this experiment was to prepare analogues of KF through semisynthetic modification of the parent compound to optimize activity against a slate of pathogens, as well as cancerous cells. Data revealed that KF and analogues were not active against malaria, …

Historical Memory And Muslim Identity In Andalusia, Sarah Lynn Karp Jan 2008

Historical Memory And Muslim Identity In Andalusia, Sarah Lynn Karp

Honors Theses

This paper concerns the negotiation of the medieval history of Islamic Spain for the purposes of identity creation and Muslim minority integration in Andalucia. The argument challenges essentialist hypotheses positing that history is absolute and demonstrates ‘innate’ characteristics of a culture. It provides an example of a contested national past which involves both periods of conflict and periods of peaceful coexistence. Many of the sources used are original language media sources, including newspaper articles, organization websites, and government documents. Interviews, data, and analysis gathered by Gema Martm-Muhoz, Gunther Dietz, Bebee Bahrami, and Nadia el- Shohoumi are used in conjunction with …

The Perils Of Privatizing Water: The Case Of Buenos Aires In Comparative Perspective, Joshua Lee Norris Jan 2008

The Perils Of Privatizing Water: The Case Of Buenos Aires In Comparative Perspective, Joshua Lee Norris

Honors Theses

In 1993, the water providing service of Buenos Aires was privatized in order to increase the number of constituents with water access and improve water quality. The government also needed an infusion of cash to pay off foreign debt and support a new monetary policy pegged to the dollar. Given these two situations, privatization seemed to provide the most logical answer to each of these problems. However, after ten years of water rate increases that prohibited many citizens fi*om receiving water access, the state renationalized water service in Buenos Aires, Although privatization is generally accepted as the most efficient means …

At The Roots Of Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of The History And Appeal Of Buddhism And Christianity In Comtemporary China, Megan Christine Rogers Jan 2008

At The Roots Of Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of The History And Appeal Of Buddhism And Christianity In Comtemporary China, Megan Christine Rogers

Honors Theses

In the late 1970s, China emerged from its Cultural Revolution as a society ostensibly free from religion. In the subsequent years, however, religious belief has grown at an astounding rate, so much so that by the year 2005, around 31.4% of Chinese adults identified themselves as religious. Given the size of China’s population, this percentage translates to over three hundred million believers. Perhaps most remarkably, not only traditional religions such as Buddhism but foreign ones—Protestantism in particular—have reflected this increase. Such rapid growth has often astonished observers and left them struggling to explain the phenomenon: in a largely secular society …

The Use Of Presidential Decrees In New Democracies: A Study Of Argentina And Chile, Lindsey Michelle Stringer Jan 2008

The Use Of Presidential Decrees In New Democracies: A Study Of Argentina And Chile, Lindsey Michelle Stringer

Honors Theses

The presidents of both Argentina and Chile have the power to issue decrees under various circumstances. However, these powers have been used more extensively in Argentina. In this thesis I answer the questions of how presidential decree powers have been used in Argentina and Chile and how these uses have affected democracy. In Chapter 1,1 define decree powers and describe the powers held by presidents in Argentina and Chile since the more recent transitions to democracy. In Chapters 2 and 3, I analyze how these powers have been used in first Argentina, then Chile. Finally, in Chapter 4,1 suggest how …

An Evaluation Of 529 Savings And Prepaid Tuition Plans, Joshua Charles Rorie Jan 2008

An Evaluation Of 529 Savings And Prepaid Tuition Plans, Joshua Charles Rorie

Honors Theses

The pui*pose of this thesis was to evaluate the two types of Internal Revenue Code (IRC) 529 college savings plans; the savings plan and the prepaid tuition plan. The investment returns of the college savings plans and, indirectly, prepaid tuition plans were compared to the current tuition inflation environment to determine which method provided the investor the most favorable return. In addition, the circumstances surrounding prepaid plans that have recently closed to new enrollment were used to evaluate the condition of the prepaid alternative. A sample of state college savings plans returns were examined along with four currently suspended prepaid …

An Adventist Missiological Response To Traditional Beliefs In Kenya, Festus Felix Gumbo Jan 2008

An Adventist Missiological Response To Traditional Beliefs In Kenya, Festus Felix Gumbo

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Seventh-day Adventist Christians in Kenya struggle to practice pure biblical teaching because many still practice African traditional beliefs. Many traditional beliefs are inconsistent with biblical teachings. This problem has contributed to syncretism that has weakened the Adventist message in Kenya. Many of the church members follow traditional beliefs because they fear to be condemned by members in society. The traditional belief that says a dead person continues to live and can communicate with the family is still strongly supported by many people in Kenya. This traditional belief contradicts biblical teaching concerning the dead. Other traditional issues church members struggle …

County-Level Analysis Of Small Business And Entrepreneurship In West Virginia: Impact On Rural Economic Growth., Semoa Costa De Sousa-Brown Jan 2008

County-Level Analysis Of Small Business And Entrepreneurship In West Virginia: Impact On Rural Economic Growth., Semoa Costa De Sousa-Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

West Virginia is one of the nation’s most rural states and historically its economy has been more unstable than that of most states. Over the years, West Virginia has devoted efforts through national and local policy programs to induce economic prosperity, curtail out-migration, and mitigate poverty, yet many of its counties remain economically depressed with high unemployment, deeply rooted poverty, low human capital formation, out-migration, and a shrinking economic base. This means, that the state policy makers need to shift or broaden their policy focus to incorporate small businesses and entrepreneurship approach to development. Studies have shown that small businesses …

Physical Activity Assessed With Three Different Methods And The Framingham Risk Score On 10-Year Coronary Heart Disease Risk, Richard Suminski, Walker Poston, John P. Foreyt, Sachiko St. Jeor

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: Physical activity (PA) protects against coronary heart disease (CHD) by favorably altering several CHD risk factors. In order to best understand the true nature of the relationship between PA and CHD, the impact different PA assessment methods have on the relationships must first be clarified. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between the Framingham Risk Score on 10-year estimated risk of CHD (10-year CHD risk) and three different PA assessment methods.

Material/methods: Female (n=143) and male (n=155) adults wore activity monitors and recorded PA in logs during a seven-day period after which they completed a seven-day …
