Gender And Racial Cues During The 2008 Democratic Party's Presidential Candidate Nomination Process: Social Responsibility In The 21St Century., Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined a segment of the 2008 Presidential election, which presents a significant political pinnacle for the United States of America. For the first time in this young democracy’s history, a white woman (Hillary Rodham Clinton) and an African American man (Barack Obama) are frontrunners for the Presidency. However, during this inspiring moment in our nation’s history, one must realize research exists suggesting that agenda setting, framing, and gender or racial cues in the media can influence voters’ opinions of minority candidates. With that in mind, this study examined how race and gender are framed during the Democratic Presidential …

An Examination Of Worry And Emotion Regulation In Older And Younger Adults., Christine E. Gould Jan 2008

An Examination Of Worry And Emotion Regulation In Older And Younger Adults., Christine E. Gould

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The prevalence of anxiety disorders is lower in older adults compared to younger adults; however, this group of disorders is the most prevalent type of mental disorder in older adults. To date, few studies have examined the specific experience of anxiety among older adults. Further, some studies have found that older adults experience more interference in their lives due to anxiety. The present study aimed to identify age differences in one process related to anxiety: worry. Additionally, differences in self-reported control over one’s emotions and over one’s anxiety were explored. Fifty-one younger adults (M = 21.43, SD = 2.88 years) …

Novel Broadband Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer Employing Custom Fiber Arrays And Opto-Vlsi Processors, Feng Xiao, Budi Juswardy, Kamal Alameh, Yong Tak Lee

Research outputs pre 2011

A reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) structure based on using a custom-made fiber array and an Opto-VLSI processor is proposed and demonstrated. The fiber array consists of N pairs of angled fibers corresponding to N channels, each of which can independently perform add, drop, and thru functions through a reconfigurable Opto-VLSI beam steerer. Experimental results show that the ROADM structure can attain an average add, drop/thru insertion loss of 5.5 dB and a uniformity of 0.3 dB over a wide bandwidth from 1524 nm to 1576 nm, and a drop/thru crosstalk level as small as -40 dB.

Domestic Space: Virtually Underestimated?, Julie Dare Jan 2008

Domestic Space: Virtually Underestimated?, Julie Dare

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper discusses the concept of domestic space as a transformative communications environment; a space in which relationships among individuals, families and ultimately the community are sustained, and in some cases transformed. Drawing on a research project currently being conducted in Western Australia, this paper explores communication within domestic space from an historical (Fischer, 1992; Moyal, 1992) and empirical perspective (Frissen, 1995; Holloway & Green, 2004), and contends that the seemingly mundane quality of the domestic sphere has resulted in it being underestimated as an avenue for research. Moreover, a research focus on young people’s uptake of information and communications …

Information Systems Teaching And Research In West Australian Universities, Janice Burn, Craig Standing, Chad Lin Jan 2008

Information Systems Teaching And Research In West Australian Universities, Janice Burn, Craig Standing, Chad Lin

Research outputs pre 2011

The authors of this chapter examine the current state of the development of information systems (IS) teaching and research within Western Australia (WA). A brief overview of the WA environment is followed by an exploration of teaching and research in the four main universities. This is examined against the framework for the study and, in particular, the impact of social processes (Ariav et al. 1987; Klein et al. 1991) and local contingencies (Culnan et al. 1993; Checkland and Holwell 1998), which are found to be of relevance to historical developments.

Tunable Photonic Rf Signal Processor Using Opto-Vlsi, Budi Juswardy, Feng Xiao, Kamal Alameh Jan 2008

Tunable Photonic Rf Signal Processor Using Opto-Vlsi, Budi Juswardy, Feng Xiao, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

A tunable photonic RF signal processor is proposed and demonstrated. The filter structure comprises a reconfigurable Opto-VLSI processor for tunability, arrayed waveguide gratings for wavelength slicing and multiplexing, a custom-made fiber array for wavelength routing and dropping, and high-dispersion fibres for true-time delay generation. The processor structure enables positive and negative weights to be synthesised thus realising arbitrary responses. The proof-of-concept of the tunable photonic RF signal processor is experimentally demonstrated.

Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Pathogens Isolated From Patients With Community-Acquired Respiratory Tract Infections In Pakistan--The Active Study, Afia Zafar, Zahid Hussain, Eale Lomama, Sophie Sibille, Seema Irfan, Erum Khan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are amongst the most wide spread and serious infections, accounting for over 50 million deaths globally each year. In developing countries, infants under 4 years of age are at greatest risk of lower RTIs, whereas in developed countries the severity of infection and rate of mortality are greater in elderly. The objective of the survey was to determine the in vitro susceptibility of antibiotics commonly prescribed RTIs against Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP), Haemophilus influenzae (HI) and Streptococcus pyogenes, isolated from patients with community-acquired RTIs globally. This survey involved 9 countries. In this study we present the …

Hepatic Angiosarcoma With Metastasis To Small Intestine, Zubair Ahmad, Azizun Nisa, Romana Idrees, Khurram Minhas, Shahid Pervez, Khalid Mumtaz

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Hepatic angiosarcomas are rare tumours with poor prognosis, with patients usually dying within 6 months. Metastases mainly occur in lymph nodes, spleen, lungs, bones and adrenals. Metastasis to small intestine is even rarer. Similarly, primary or metastatic angiosarcomas in small intestine are extremely rare, often present with recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia, and have an extremely poor prognosis. Both primary or metastatic intestinal angiosarcomas may exhibit epithelioid morphology. It may be very difficult to differentiate between primary and secondary cases in intestine and especially when the tumour exhibits epithelioid morphology.

Beyond Patient Satisfaction: Physician Ambivalence, Authenticity, And The Challenges To Patient-Centered Medicine, Kiera S. Levine Jan 2008

Beyond Patient Satisfaction: Physician Ambivalence, Authenticity, And The Challenges To Patient-Centered Medicine, Kiera S. Levine

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Despite tremendous and increasing clinical opportunities for cure and comfort, patients often still feel dissatisfied in their relationship with their doctor. That patient dissatisfaction has endured, even in the face of increasing medical knowledge and capacity, suggests a failing not in the quality of medical treatment but in the way it is administered. Increasingly, the modern medical movement toward patient-centered medical care (and away from doctor-centered care) has attempted to address this failing, looking to patient-satisfaction as one of its primary measures of success in these efforts. However, its willingness to overlook the importance of the basis of reported satisfaction, …

Taxation And Doing Business In Indian Country, Erik M. Jensen Jan 2008

Taxation And Doing Business In Indian Country, Erik M. Jensen

Faculty Publications

Furthering investment in Indian country (a term that includes, but is not limited to, reservations) is an important goal, but potential investors are hesitant - and with reason. One disincentive to invest is uncertainty about tax liability. Understanding taxation in Indian country requires knowledge not only of traditional tax law, but also of American Indian law principles dating from the early nineteenth century, and not many practitioners are up to that task. This article tries to make sense, as much as is possible, of the doctrines that have developed over the centuries.

The article first discusses some basics: the concept …

"Dirty Pretty Things" And The Law: Curing The Organ Shortage & Health Care Crises In America, Jennifer M. Smith Jan 2008

"Dirty Pretty Things" And The Law: Curing The Organ Shortage & Health Care Crises In America, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

There is an organ shortage crisis in the world, especially for kidneys and livers, resulting in approximately 6,000 deaths annually in the United States alone. There is also a health care crisis in the United States, with roughly sixteen percent of the population uninsured, resulting in approximately 18,000 deaths annually. In 1984, the National Organ Transplant Act ("NOTA') banned the acquisition of human organs in exchange for valuable consideration, primarily to prevent the exploitation of poor people--those who are most likely to sell their organs. Transplant professionals are increasingly pushing to legalize the outright sale of human organs from living …

Transport Of Blue Crab Larvae In The Middle Atlantic Bight: A Wet And Windy Journey, Charles E. Epifanio, Charles E. Tilburg Jan 2008

Transport Of Blue Crab Larvae In The Middle Atlantic Bight: A Wet And Windy Journey, Charles E. Epifanio, Charles E. Tilburg

Journal of Marine Research

This paper describes the 25-year evolution of a program of research into the larval ecology of the Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) near the mouth of Delaware Bay on the east coast of the USA (38.5N, 75.1W). The investigation began as a biological study; eventually incorporated a physical component; and finally added a mathematical modeling aspect. Early work was strictly biological and demonstrated that C. sapidus larvae are exported from the estuary to the adjacent coastal ocean where larval development occurs. Once this fact was established, it was clear that further progress demanded an understanding of shelf circulation. …

Two Thumbs Down: In The Absence Of Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Ill-Conceived Bills Flood The Virginia General Assembly, Leigh A. Sellers

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

On July 26, 2007, a federal court ruled it unconstitutional for city officials in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, to implement a local anti-immigrant ordinance that punished employers and landlords for doing business with undocumented immigrants. Despite this well-grounded landmark decision, local governments throughout the nation continue to develop patchwork solutions to a broken federal immigration system, endangering the health and well-being of communities and people alike. Virginia has positioned itself at the forefront of America's immigration debate. Leading up to the 2008 General Assembly session, localities throughout the state developed public statements on immigration, reaffirmed English as the official language, and considered …

Evaluation Of Suspected Renal Colic Patients With Unenhanced Low-Dose Multidetector Computed Tomography (Mdct), Nebayosi Twahirwa Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Suspected Renal Colic Patients With Unenhanced Low-Dose Multidetector Computed Tomography (Mdct), Nebayosi Twahirwa

Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology

Acute renal colic is probably one of the most excruciatingly painful event a person can endure. [1]. Though this is typical of urinary tract calculi, it’s important to note that non-calculus and non-genitourinary conditions can present in a similar manner. Unenhanced helical CT (CT KUB), originally described by Smith et al [2] in 1995, is one single radiological test that has proven successful in the valuation of patients presenting with renal colic. This technique has been shown to be more accurate compared to abdominal radiography [3,4], ultrasound and has replaced excretory urography in the detection of urinary tract calculi in …
