The Role Of Zooxanthellae In Marine Invertebrates, Jonathan Wallen Dec 2008

The Role Of Zooxanthellae In Marine Invertebrates, Jonathan Wallen

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The importance of zooxanthellae in marine environments cannot be understated. Their role as a source of nutritive energy to corals underpins the success of reef-building systems worldwide, forming some of the most productive ecosystems on earth. The diversity of these unicellular symbiotic algae, which belong to the genus Symbiodinium, is enormous. Multiple hosts, multiple types of algae and the diverse habitats in which these organisms are found suggests a diverse reservoir of symbiont types in almost every region. This review focuses on the functional and genetic diversity of Symbiodinium, the specificity and flexibility of the host-algal association, and the implications …

Is There A Visitor Effect On Abyssinian Ground Hornbills (Bucorvus Abyssinicus), Papuan Wreathed Hornbills (Aceros Plicatus), Wrinkled Hornbills (Aceros Corrugatus) And Toco Toucans (Ramphastos Toco) In A Captive Zoo Environment?, Susanna Frances Thicks

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Research into the possible effects that zoo visitors have on the captive animals they come to visit is still relatively poorly understood. Most of the studies all ready completed have used non-human primate subjects, but there is a distinct lack of studies using non-primate species. One of the groups that are in particular need of this kind of research is birds. This study examines a potential visitor effect in captive Abyssinian Ground Hornbills (Bucorvus abyssinicus), Papuan Wreathed Hornbills (Aceros plicatus), Wrinkled Hornbills (Aceros corrugatus) and Toco Toucans (Ramphastos toco) at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park®. This study also investigates the evenness …

Does He Know I'M His Brother? A Multi-Method Inquiry Into Sibling Relationships Involving Children With Disabilities, Annabel David Dec 2008

Does He Know I'M His Brother? A Multi-Method Inquiry Into Sibling Relationships Involving Children With Disabilities, Annabel David

The Plymouth Student Scientist

A mixed method approach was used to investigate the impact of disability and family-size on sibling relationships. The quantitative component used a questionnaire to analyse 191 sibling dyads in terms of companionship, empathy, teaching / caring, rivalry, aggression / conflict, and avoidance. Lower levels of positive behaviours and higher levels of negative behaviours were reported when one of the children was disabled. Non-disabled children displayed more positive and less negative behaviour towards their disabled siblings in three-child-families, compared with those in two-child-families. The qualitative component consisted of interviews with four families and the data was analysed using a grounded theory …

Examining The Laws Of War And The Necessity Of Evolving Legal Principles To Counter Terrorism, Erik Leigh Dutkiewicz Dec 2008

Examining The Laws Of War And The Necessity Of Evolving Legal Principles To Counter Terrorism, Erik Leigh Dutkiewicz

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the dilemma surrounding the quest for an internationally binding legal solution to countering terrorism. It examines the evolution of international laws of war and the definition of terrorism, and the shortcomings of these laws and principles in the classification and adjudication of acts of international terrorism. In doing so, it examines the applicable treaties on the laws of war, including the Geneva Conventions of 1949, various multilateral and regional treaties, and various domestic laws. Recommendations include a proposed definition of terrorism for use in the revision of international laws and a proposed …

A Critical Evaluation Of The Symbiotic Association Between Tropical Tube-Dwelling Polychaetes And Their Hermatypic Coral Hosts, With A Focus On Spirobranchus Giganteus (Pallas, 1766), Sonia Rowley Dec 2008

A Critical Evaluation Of The Symbiotic Association Between Tropical Tube-Dwelling Polychaetes And Their Hermatypic Coral Hosts, With A Focus On Spirobranchus Giganteus (Pallas, 1766), Sonia Rowley

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Coral reefs are high in species diversity with a low effective population size for most species and a high incidence of specific co-evolved relationships. Hermatypic corals are associated with, and attract a variety of, symbionts and commensals which helps to maintain coral reef biodiversity. However, little is known about such associations. Tropical tube-dwelling polychaetes provide an interesting surrogate in the enhancement of current understanding of such associations posing the question: what is the nature of the symbiotic association between tropical tube-dwelling polychaetes and their hermatypic coral hosts? This question is addressed by reviewing the life history and ecology of the …

The Role Of Racial Attitudes And Identity In Black Client-White Counselor Dyads, Tara Michelle Ferguson Dec 2008

The Role Of Racial Attitudes And Identity In Black Client-White Counselor Dyads, Tara Michelle Ferguson

Dissertations

The therapeutic alliance has become an important area of investigation in the psychotherapy literature due to its demonstration of a moderate and consistent relationship with therapy outcomes. Some researchers have suggested that barriers to alliance formation may exist in cross-ethnic dyads due to different worldviews, race related socialization experiences, and racial attitudes. Although past research has indicated that racial identity and attitudes played a role in predicting various counseling processes, no studies in this area have examined their influence in actual counseling dyads. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of Black racial identity and attitude …

PURPOSE: Angiogenesis plays an important role in pancreas cancer pathobiology. Pancreatic tumor cells secrete vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), activating endothelial cell protein kinase C beta (PKC beta) that phosphorylates GSK3 beta to suppress apoptosis and promote endothelial cell proliferation and microvessel formation. We used Enzastaurin (Enz) to test the hypothesis that inhibition of PKC beta results in radiosensitization of endothelial cells in culture and in vivo. MATERIALS/METHODS: We measured PKC beta phosphorylation, VEGF pathway signaling, colony formation, and capillary sprout formation in primary human dermal microvessel endothelial cells (HDMECs) after Enz or radiation (RT) treatment. Microvessel density and tumor …

Intracerebral Hemorrhage For The Palliative Care Provider: What You Need To Know., B Brent Simmons, Susan M Parks Dec 2008

Intracerebral Hemorrhage For The Palliative Care Provider: What You Need To Know., B Brent Simmons, Susan M Parks

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) makes up 10%-30% of all strokes. Palliative care providers are often asked to get involved with ICH cases to aid with development of short-term and long-term goals. Prognosis can be calculated using the ICH score (based on Glasgow Coma Score score, ICH volume, presence of intraventricular hemorrhage, age, and location of origin) or the Essen score (based on age, NIH Stroke Scale [NIHSS], and level of consciousness). Do-not-resuscitate (DNR) status is important to discuss with families. Expert consensus states DNR is appropriate if the patient has two of the following: severe stroke, life-threatening brain damage, or significant …

Characterization Of The Ompl1 Gene Of Pathogenic Leptospira Species In China And Cross-Immunogenicity Of The Ompl1 Protein, Haiyan Dong, Ye Hu, Feng Xue, Dexter Sun, David M. Ojcius, Yafei Mao, Jie Yan

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Background: The usefulness of available vaccine and serological tests for leptospirosis is limited by the low cross-reactivity of antigens from numerous serovars of pathogenic Leptospira spp. Identification of genus-specific protein antigens (GP-Ag) of Leptospira would be important for development of universal vaccines and serodiagnostic methods. OmpL1, a transmembrane porin of pathogenic leptospires, was identified as a possible GP-Ag, but its sequence diversity and immune cross-reactivity among different serovars of pathogenic leptospires remains largely unknown.

Results: PCR analysis demonstrated that the ompL1 gene existed in all 15 official Chinese standard strains as well as 163 clinical strains of pathogenic leptospires isolated …

Ultra Dynamised And Undynamised Dilutions Of Alloxan At Micro-Doses Influence Selective Pancreatic Beta Cell And Hormonal Profile: An Experimental Approach, Sunil Kumar, C Nayak

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Dynamised and Undynamised preparations of Alloxan 6x, 30x, 200x, and 1000x were examined for its anti-diabetic activities in Alloxan induced diabetes mellitus albino rats. Oral administration of dynamised potencies of Alloxan 6x, 30x, 200x, and 1000x at dose level of 50μ1/100 g.b.w. daily for 30 days regularly exhibited slow and steady fall in blood sugar level accompanied with perceptible increase in serum growth hormone (GH) i.e. p < 0.01 (less significant) and p < 0.001 (significant) respectively when compared to dynamised and Undynamised control as well as Undynamised Alloxan fed groups under identical conditions. Histological and histo-morphometric studies also revealed reactivation of Pancreatic β-cells. Dynamised dilutions of Alloxan acts steadily through hypothalamo-hypophysial- pancreatic β-cells axis producing selective reactivation of β-cells at micro-doses, steadily viz 6x < 30x < 200x < 1000x. The drug may indirectly release Releasing factors (RF) from hypothalamic neurons, stimulating the secretion of growth hormone which in turn triggers optimum insulin secretion from β-cells. The therapeutic action of the test drug in dynamised dilutions at micro dose and relatively high dilutions on pancreatic β-cells confirms the phenomenon of "Potentization" & "Similia Similibus Curentur" and lack of acute and sub-acute toxicity at fairly large dosage may open up new prospects in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and throw light in elucidating the mechanism of action at higher dilutions. It was noticed that the dynamised dilutions of alcohol fed control group is more toxic and lethal to animals than the dynamised and Undynamised dilutions of Alloxan and Undynamised alcohol fed control groups. Furthermore, it was also discernible that blood sugar and growth hormone levels were stabilized even after withdrawal of test drug in its 30x, 200x and 1000x potencies.

Clinical Evaluation Of Homoeopathic Therapy In The Management Of Hyperlipoproteinemia, J Govekar, V Paul, K Singh, Praveen Oberai, Varanasi Roja

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Objectives: This study aimed at evolving a group of useful homoeopathic medicines in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinaemia, to identify their reliable indications, most useful potencies, frequency of administration and relationship with other medicines. Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out during the period 1992-2003. Three hundred and twenty two patients with hyperlipoproteinaemia and various clinical presentations were studied. Patients of more than 30 years of age, with cholesterol > 200mg/dl, triglycerides > 170mg/dl, LDL > 150mg/dl, VLDL > 50mg/dl and HDL < 35 mg/dl were included in this study. Specific parameters were followed to assess the intensity of complaints and the improvement status. Homoeopathic medicines were prescribed in different potencies (Q to 10M), basing on the presenting complaints, mental and physical attributes of the patients. The patients were advised to have low calorie diet and regular exercise. Results: Two hundred ninety three (293) patients were followed up regularly and varying degrees of improvement were observed, viz. marked improvement in 77 patients, moderate improvement in 113 patients, mild improvement in 100 patients and no improvement in 03 patients. Abroma augusta 30, Gelsemium 30, Lycopodium 1M, Bryonia alba 30, Pulsatilla 30, Nux vomica 30 were found to be useful among the other prescribed medicines. Conclusion: Results obtained from the study are encouraging with findings that 26% of the patients improved markedly with an evidence of changes in laboratory parameters. However, an experiment in controlled setting with improved protocol and clearer outcome parameters is required.

The Impact Of Divorce On Physical, Social, Psychological, And Socioeconomic Well-Being, Robyn J. Barrus Dec 2008

The Impact Of Divorce On Physical, Social, Psychological, And Socioeconomic Well-Being, Robyn J. Barrus

Theses and Dissertations

Divorce brings unprecedented changes. The prevalence of divorce today constitutes a need to thoroughly study the well-being of divorced peoples. This study used a multidimensional definition of well-being to study divorced peoples and other marital statuses. Physical, social, psychological, and socioeconomic well-being were used. This study hypothesized that the married and remarried have higher well-being than the never married who in turn have higher well-being than the divorced or separated. It was also hypothesized that some are pre-disposed to divorce. ANCOVA analysis was used to test these hypotheses in a sample of approximately 9,863 respondents from the NSFH study. Support …

Regulation With Placebo Effects, Anup Malani Dec 2008

Regulation With Placebo Effects, Anup Malani

Duke Law Journal

A growing scientific literature supports the existence of placebo effects from a wide range of health interventions and for a range of medical conditions. This Article reviews this literature, examines the implications for law and policy, and suggests future areas for research on placebo effects. In particular, it makes the case for altering the drug approval process to account for, if not credit, placebo effects. It recommends that evidence of placebo effects be permitted as a defense in cases alleging violations of informed consent or false advertising. Finally, it finds that tort law already has doctrines such as joint and …

Rape As A Weapon Of Genocide, Alllison Ruby Reid-Cunningham Dec 2008

Rape As A Weapon Of Genocide, Alllison Ruby Reid-Cunningham

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Sexual violence against women during war and genocide is a pressing problem. Rape is used as a tactic of war and genocide because of its physical and psychosocial consequences for individuals, families, and communities. The physical and emotional sequelae of individual assaults are magnified when rape is committed on a mass scale, as in Bosnia-Herzegovina (1992–1996), Rwanda (1994), and Darfur, Sudan (2003–present). The victimization of raped women affects the community through the collective responses of survivors and their families, friends, and neighbors. Forced intercourse and impregnation represent a symbolic conquest of the woman by the rapist. This conquest becomes generalized …

Churchill In Munich: The Paradox Of Genocide Prevention, Robert Melson

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

A catastrophe averted is likely not to be viewed as a catastrophe. A predicted event that fails to materialize is a non-event, something that did not happen, and politicians who expend wealth and lives on something that fails to happen cannot expect to reap the rewards of their decisions. Quite to the contrary, politicians who spend lives and treasure to prevent catastrophes such as genocide are likely to be vilified and punished for their efforts: to the extent that their actions succeed in averting a catastrophe, there is no proof of their success, only of the costs of their efforts. …

Advancing The Knowledge Of Local Health Care Policy Through The Growth Machine Thesis., David P. Houvenagle 1965-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A disciplined-configurative case study design was carried out to explore whether a growth machine exists and shapes local healthcare policy in Louisville. A historical analysis first explored whether a growth machine existed in Louisville in the past and shaped healthcare policy. Second, a network analysis was used to identify the recent contours of the Louisville growth machine. Third, qualitative interviews were conducted with central individuals as indicated by the social network analysis to assess the degree to which local healthcare policy is shaped and driven by the growth machine. The results show that Louisville has consistently had a growth machine …
