Weight Regain Is Related To Decreases In Physical Activity During Weight Loss, Xuewen Wang, Mary F. Lyles, Tongjian You, Michael J. Berry, Jack Rejeski, Barbara J. Nicklas

Faculty Publications

Purpose—To examine whether adaptations in physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) during weight loss were associated with future weight regain in overweight/obese, older women.

Research Methods and Procedures—Thirty-four overweight/obese (BMI=25–40 kg/m2), postmenopausal women underwent a 20-week weight loss intervention of hypocaloric diet with (low- or high-intensity) or without treadmill walking (weekly caloric deficit was ~11760 kJ), with a subsequent 12-month follow-up. RMR (via indirect calorimetry), PAEE (by RT3 accelerometer) and body composition (by DXA) were measured before and after intervention. Body weight and self-reported information on physical activity were collected after intervention, …

Living With Alzheimer’S Disease: A Study Of Adult Day Health Services In Massachusetts, Nina M. Silverstein, Cathy M. Wong, Kristen E. Brueck

Gerontology Institute Publications

The role of adult day health care (ADHC) is gaining increased attention as the nation prepares for the large cohort of baby boomers entering their later years. Many boomers are aging with physical and cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Projections indicate that Massachusetts, along with the nation as a whole, is experiencing an increasing rate of older persons as baby boomers enter late-life. The Commonwealth can expect that persons with Alzheimer's disease and their care partners will need community-based services that are specifically designed for adults with cognitive impairments. However, a report by the Robert Wood Johnson …

Does Place Explain Racial Health Disparities? Quantifying The Contribution Of Residential Context To The Black/White Health Gap In The United States, Brian K. Finch, D. Phuong Do, Ricardo Basurto-Davila, Chloe E. Bird, José J. Escarce, Nicole Lurie Oct 2008

Does Place Explain Racial Health Disparities? Quantifying The Contribution Of Residential Context To The Black/White Health Gap In The United States, Brian K. Finch, D. Phuong Do, Ricardo Basurto-Davila, Chloe E. Bird, José J. Escarce, Nicole Lurie

Faculty Publications

The persistence of the black health disadvantage has been a puzzling component of health in the United States in spite of general declines in rates of morbidity and mortality over the past century. Studies that have focused on well-established individual-level determinants of health such as socio-economic status and health behaviors have been unable to fully explain these disparities. Recent research has begun to focus on other factors such as racism, discrimination, and segregation. Variation in neighborhood context - socio-demographic composition, social aspects, and built environment - has been postulated as an additional explanation for racial disparities, but few attempts have …

Recovery From Supraspinal Fatigue Is Slowed In Old Adults After Fatiguing Maximal Isometric Contractions, Sandra K. Hunter, Gabrielle Todd, Jane E. Butler, Simon C. Gandevia, Janet L. Taylor Oct 2008

Recovery From Supraspinal Fatigue Is Slowed In Old Adults After Fatiguing Maximal Isometric Contractions, Sandra K. Hunter, Gabrielle Todd, Jane E. Butler, Simon C. Gandevia, Janet L. Taylor

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

This study compared the contribution of supraspinal fatigue to muscle fatigue in old and young adults. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of motor cortex was used to assess voluntary activation during maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of elbow flexor muscles in 17 young adults (25.5 ± 3.6 yr; mean ± SD) and 7 old adults (73.0 ± 3.3 yr). Subjects performed a fatigue task involving six sustained MVCs (22-s duration, separated by 10 s). Young adults exhibited greater reductions in maximal voluntary torque (67 ± 15% of baseline) than the old (37 ± 6%; P < 0.001). Increments in torque (superimposed twitch) generated by TMS during sustained MVCs increased for the young and old(P < 0.001) but were larger for the old adults at the start of the sustained contractions and during recovery (P < 0.05). Voluntary activation was less for the old adults at the start of some sustained contractions and during recovery(P = 0.02). Motor-evoked potential …

Examining Neurophysiological Evidence Of Age-Related Interactions Of Sensory And Cognitive Processes During Speech Processing, Cady Kristen Block

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study sought to examine the contribution of sensory and cognitive factors on speech processing as evidenced by ERP measures and to find support for the Sensory Cognitive Interaction Theory (SCIT) and the Effortfulness Hypothesis in that older adults. who experience sensory deficits with normal aging. must put forth increased effort during early sensory stages of speech processing that may compromise subsequent semantic performance and recall of information. In the present investigation. younger and older adults performed a sentence verification task at low and high presentation levels (PL). Accuracy and response time to sentence verifications were assessed along with …

Principles Of Effective Behavior Change: Application To Extension Family Educational Programming, Clara Pratt, Sally Bowman Oct 2008

Principles Of Effective Behavior Change: Application To Extension Family Educational Programming, Clara Pratt, Sally Bowman

Journal of Extension

Principles of effective behavior change are described in terms of their implications for Extension educational programming. These principles are drawn from evidence-based models for child, youth, and family programs. Examples include: build specific behavioral skills; increase environmental conditions that support desired behaviors; modify behavior sequentially; train in naturalistic conditions; teach specific cognitive principles to guide behavior; practice the desired behavior; higher dosage leads to greater response; facilitate supports for behavior; and attribute success to the individual. Implications include offering more multi-session classes, maintaining model fidelity, and utilizing evaluations to assess readiness for behavior change.

The Class Of ’65: Boomers At Sixty Recall Turning Points That Shaped Their Lives A Narrative Approach, Mary C. Poole

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the lives of baby boomers turning sixty as they use narrative to review their past by focusing on turning points. They reflect upon their present, and anticipate their future. The story begins at the St. Pius X High School Class of 1965's fortieth reunion, and proceeds to a class sixtieth birthday celebration and focus group. In addition, five members of the class record their life stories retrospectively. This research explores issues of identity, both personal and generational; the social construction of aging; grief, loss and death; and resilience, meaning, and spirituality. Methods used are autoethnography, narrative, participant …

Non-Profit Health Care Services Marketing: Persuasive Messages Based On Multidimensional Concept Mapping And Direct Magnitude Estimation, Michael L. Hall Sep 2008

Non-Profit Health Care Services Marketing: Persuasive Messages Based On Multidimensional Concept Mapping And Direct Magnitude Estimation, Michael L. Hall

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Persuasive messages for marketing healthcare services in general and coordinated care in particular are more important now for providers, hospitals, and third-party payers than ever before. The combination of measurement based information with creativity may be among the most critical factors in reaching markets or expanding markets. The research presented here provides an approach to marketing coordinated care services which allows healthcare managers to plan persuasive messages given the market conditions they face. Using market respondents’ thinking about product attributes combined with distance measurement between pairs of product attributes, a conceptual marketing map is presented and applied to advertising, message …

Application Of Shortest-Path Network Analysis To Identify Genes That Modulate Longevity In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jr Managbanag Sep 2008

Application Of Shortest-Path Network Analysis To Identify Genes That Modulate Longevity In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jr Managbanag

Theses and Dissertations

Shortest-path network analysis was employed to identify novel genes that modulate longevity in the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Based upon a set of previously reported genes associated with increased life span, a shortest path network algorithm was applied to a pre-existing protein-protein interaction dataset in order to construct a shortest-path longevity network. To validate this network, the replicative aging potential of 88 single gene deletion strains corresponding to predicted components of the shortest path longevity network was determined. The 88 single-gene deletion strains identified by a network approach are significantly enriched for mutation conferring both increased and decreased replicative life …
