Maternal Experience And Alzheimer's Disease : Degenerative Differences In The Female Rat, Lindsay W. Victoria May 2008

Maternal Experience And Alzheimer's Disease : Degenerative Differences In The Female Rat, Lindsay W. Victoria

Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease found in many aging adults. The presence of amyloid precursor protein (APP) is an early indicator of the onset of Alzheimer’s, primarily in memory-related brain regions like the hippocampus. Hormones accompanying pregnancy, such as estrogen, may provide the female brain with protection against neurodegeneration and deposits of APP. The present study will compare concentrations of APP in the brains of parous and nulliparous animals and examine the interaction of APP with estrogen receptor beta (ERβ). Young and aged animals will also be compared to determine any early effects of APP or ERβ. It is …

The Elder Economic Security Initiative™ Program: The Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index For Pennsylvania, Laura Henze Russell, Ellen A. Bruce

Gerontology Institute Publications

This report will address the question of income adequacy for Pennsylvania’s older adults using the WOW-GI National Elder Economic Security Standard Index (the Index) methodology. The Index will benchmark basic costs of living for elder households. It will illustrate how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households: household size, homeownership or renter, mode of transportation, and health status. The costs are for basic needs of elder households; they are based on market costs and do not assume any subsidies.

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Performance on the Sternberg working memory task, and MEG cortical response on a variation of the Sternberg task were examined in middle-aged carriers and non-carriers of the APOE ε4 allele. Physical activity was also assessed to examine whether exercise level modifies the relationship between APOE genotype and neurocognitive function. Regression revealed that high physical activity was associated with faster RT in the six- and eight-letter conditions of the Sternberg in ε4 carriers, but not in the non-carriers after controlling for age, gender, and education (N = 54). Furthermore, the MEG analysis revealed that sedentary ε4 carriers exhibited lower right temporal …

Refinement Of The Shared Care Instrument-Revised: A Measure Of A Family Care Interaction, Margaret Sebern May 2008

Refinement Of The Shared Care Instrument-Revised: A Measure Of A Family Care Interaction, Margaret Sebern

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

This study’s purpose was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Shared Care Instrument-Revised (SCI-R) in a sample of family care dyads. The SCI-R was developed to measure the construct of shared care, which is a system of three constructs (communication, decision making, reciprocity) used in family care to exchange support. An important aspect of evaluating the SCI-R was to create a measure that is statistically sound and meaningful for patient and caregivers. Surveys were mailed to randomly selected home health dyads, which included 223 patients and 220 caregivers. Reliability and confirmatory factor analysis, and concurrent validity were examined. Internal …

Factors Associated With Perceived Burden, Resourcefulness, And Quality Of Life In Female Family Members Of Adults With Serious Mental Illness, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet, M. Jane Suresky May 2008

Factors Associated With Perceived Burden, Resourcefulness, And Quality Of Life In Female Family Members Of Adults With Serious Mental Illness, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet, M. Jane Suresky

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

BACKGROUND: Each year, 54 million American adults are affected by serious mental illness. Most of these persons depend on female family members for support or assistance, and unless these women are resourceful, they may experience considerable burden, stigma by association, depressive thoughts, and poor quality of life. OBJECTIVE:In this study, we examined the associations between characteristics of female family members (age, race, education), adults with serious mental illness (age, diagnosis), and the family situation (relationship, living arrangements, care provided) and caregivers' burden, stigma, depressive cognitions, resourcefulness, and quality of life.STUDY DESIGN:In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, a convenience …

Ethical Dimensions And Filial Caregiving, Ellen Frances Mccarty M.A., Ph.D., Constance Smith Hendricks Ph.D., Denisha L. Hendricks M.Ed., Ed.D., Kathleen Mary Mccarty Mph, Sd Apr 2008

Ethical Dimensions And Filial Caregiving, Ellen Frances Mccarty M.A., Ph.D., Constance Smith Hendricks Ph.D., Denisha L. Hendricks M.Ed., Ed.D., Kathleen Mary Mccarty Mph, Sd

Journal of Health Ethics

Filial caregiving has significantly reduced nursing home admission for older relatives (LoSasso & Johnson, 2002). While much has been written about family caregiving stress, little has been written regarding ethical dimensions of filial (pertaining to a son or daughter) responsibility for older parents and their perception of moral demands.

Therefore, this paper provides the following:
      An overview of the concept of family caregiving;
A discussion of family characteristics; and
An explication of ethical underpinnings and filial caregiver acceptance.

The ethical challenge for health care providers and researchers is to explore with adult children the reasons given for persuading themselves to …

Haasl, M Reza Ahmadi, Sivan Vadakkadath Meethal, Carey E. Gleason, Sterling C. Johnson, Sanjay Asthana, Richard L. Bowen, Craig S. Atwood

Research outputs pre 2011

Genetic and biochemical studies support the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele as a major risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), though ~50% of AD patients do not carry the allele. APOE transports cholesterol for luteinizing hormone (LH)-regulated steroidogenesis, and both LH and neurosteroids have been implicated in the etiology of AD. Since polymorphisms of LH beta-subunit (LHB) and its receptor (LHCGR) have not been tested for their association with AD, we scored AD and age-matched control samples for APOE genotype and 14 polymorphisms of LHB and LHCGR. Thirteen gene-gene interactions between the …

Counting Or Discounting Television Information: An Examination Of Viewer Perceptions About Old-Age From A Cognitive Processing Perspective Of Cultivation Effects, Lynda Pasteur Apr 2008

Counting Or Discounting Television Information: An Examination Of Viewer Perceptions About Old-Age From A Cognitive Processing Perspective Of Cultivation Effects, Lynda Pasteur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cultivation theory (Gerbner & Gross, 1976) suggests that the cumulative effect of heavy exposure to television's underrepresentation and negative portrayal of people 65+ as sexless, insignificant, and comical can cause people to assume such television-like perceptions of the age group in the real world. This study's purpose was to explore not only television's cultivation effect on viewers' perceptions of the number and nature of people 65+, but also the psychological processes that are expected to mediate this effect. As an extension of Shrum, Wyer, and O'Guinn's (1998) study on the role of source discounting in cultivation, this quasi-experiment employed three …

Costs And Benefits Of Elderly Prescription Drug Coverage: Evidence From Veterans’ Health Care, Melissa Boyle Apr 2008

Costs And Benefits Of Elderly Prescription Drug Coverage: Evidence From Veterans’ Health Care, Melissa Boyle

Economics Department Working Papers

This study tests the impact of a public prescription benefit on Medicare-eligible veterans, utilizing a mid-1990s benefit change in the VA health care system. Using data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, I compare prescription spending and utilization, as well as use of other health services and health outcomes for veterans and non-veterans before and after the VA insurance change. Results show that receipt of a publicly-provided prescription benefit leads to an increase in spending on prescriptions, and simultaneously, a decrease in spending on other medical services. On average, every $1 increase in drug spending is associated with a $6.50 …
