Extreme Precipitation Trends In New England, Susan Grace Spierre Jan 2008

Extreme Precipitation Trends In New England, Susan Grace Spierre

Master's Theses and Capstones

Decision-makers require current data and analysis on extreme precipitation events and trends to facilitate effective adaptation. Here, multiple definitions of extreme precipitation (accumulations of one-inch, two-inch and four-inches, ten-, five- and one-yr. recurrence intervals, and the 99th percentile of events) are used to examine changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events in New England over the past 60-100 years. Correlations of trends in extreme precipitation events with temperature and with indices of atmospheric circulation patterns are also investigated.

Predominately positive trends were found for all extreme precipitation definitions. For example, increases of 1 events/decade in one-inch events …

Peace On G-D'S Terms: The Ideological Project Of Christian Zionism, James Alton Croker Iii. Jan 2008

Peace On G-D'S Terms: The Ideological Project Of Christian Zionism, James Alton Croker Iii.

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examines the Christian Zionist movement. It identifies the motivations, composition, and objectives of the Christian Zionist movement in order to illuminate the interest group's influence on U.S. foreign policy making on Israel. The movement's influence results from the framing of its ideology as a political project, through which the movement is able to capitalize on a pre-existing pro-Israel opinion bias among Evangelicals, construct a community of believers from these individuals, and mobilize that community into action. This argument shows that classic realist accounts, such as that put forward in Mearsheimer and Walt's work, do not account for a …

"The Invisible Lines Between Us": Border-Making In Anglo-America, 1750--1800, Cameron B. Strang

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis explores how the boundary-making practices of white officials came to be the dominant way of dividing and claiming the American landscape. It argues that, in the late colonial era, neither Indians nor officials could actualize their desired boundaries. Indians' map-based boundaries were annulled by white officials while officials' land surveys were subject to onsite termination and manipulation by Indian groups. White frontier settlers, however, developed powerful ways to establish their land claims---namely informal delineations backed by actual settlement---that could not be prevented by officials or Indians. In the final years of the colonial era and the first decades …

The Scale Of Networks?: Local Climate Change Coalitions, Hari M. Osofsky, Janet Koven Levit

Chicago Journal of International Law

Spring 2007 was a heady time for climate advocates. The fourth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change expressed an overwhelming scientific consensus that anthropogenic climate change is a serious problem. The US Supreme Court not only addressed climate change for the first time, but also found that the US Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") had abused its discretion in denying a petition asking it to regulate motor vehicle emissions . The UN Security Council also took an initial look at climate change, with a ranging debate over its security implications. Amid that furor, it is perhaps unsurprising that another …

Ruminations On Terrorism: Expiation And Exposition, Christopher L. Blakesley Jan 2008

Ruminations On Terrorism: Expiation And Exposition, Christopher L. Blakesley

Scholarly Works

To paraphrase Richard Falk: Terrorism is political or ideological violence without restraint of law and morality. This article will consider terrorism and reactions to terrorism through a prism of history, philosophy, literature, and law. I argue that terrorism is committed by state actors as well as non-state-actors, and not only by sponsoring them or giving them a safe-haven. I argue that intentional or reckless slaughter of innocents or torturing "enemies" constitutes terrorism and that it ultimately erodes a state's or a group's morality and well-being. It is ultimately self-destructive in most every way. Most nation-states and groups define terrorism in …

Survey Of Forensically-Important Calliphoridae In Kingston And St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies, Wayne Anthony Cranston

LSU Master's Theses

The first research to be done in Jamaica on forensically-important species was conducted at the Government of Jamaica Forensic Laboratory in Kingston and St. Andrew in two phases. Phase 1was conducted from July 5 to July 24, 2007, and phase 2 was conducted from February 11 to February 28, 2008. In the phase 1 study, one local black colored Landrace pig (Sus scrofa L.) carcass that weighed 21kg was used as a model for human bodies to determine the rate of decomposition and the pattern of insect succession on decomposing bodies in Jamaica. Ants were the first arthropods to arrive …

2008 Northeast Ohio Barometer Of Economic Attitudes, Kathryn W. Hexter, Molly Schnoke, John F. Brennan

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The primary goal of the Northeast Ohio Barometer of Economic Attitudes (NEO Barometer) is to provide meaningful information about what the public knows and perceives about the region. The Barometer is designed to provide a reliable and objective opinion-gauge of the people in Northeast Ohio. Since 2004, it has been tracking the public’s perception of the region’s general economic development progress, as well as opinions on regionalism and economic development initiatives. The 2008 survey added a new section that begins to track public perceptions about the importance of education, to inform strategies for addressing the persistently low levels of educational …

The Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Region Doing Well: More Persons Attending College And Getting Degrees, 2000 To 2007, Mark Salling

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Discussions of economic development and job availability in northeast Ohio often lament the unavailability of a qualified workforce in some sectors. Workforce training and attracting more educated population to the region are sited as important, even critical, objectives for the region. While a more detailed study of the regions’ workforce by The Center for Community Solutions is nearing completion, the release of new data by the Census Bureau provides some enlightening observations about college enrollments and educational attainment in the region.

The Role Of Brownfields Redevelopment In The Rejuvenation Of An Older Industrial City: A Case Study Of Two Successful Brownfields Reuse Projects In Baltimore, Maryland, Gregory William Lewis Jan 2008

The Role Of Brownfields Redevelopment In The Rejuvenation Of An Older Industrial City: A Case Study Of Two Successful Brownfields Reuse Projects In Baltimore, Maryland, Gregory William Lewis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The industrialized world is littered with tens of thousands of acres of vacant, decaying, and often contaminated industrial and commercial sites. These sites, commonly referred to as “brownfields,” scar the landscape of communities, expose citizens to possible health risks, deteriorate surrounding land values, and erode the tax base of municipalities. Vacant and abandoned industrial sites are present in every state, but the blight associated with brownfields is worst in America’s “rustbelt,” the chain of once great industrial cites and towns stretching along historic canals and rail lines from Baltimore to Boston, and west to Milwaukee. This thesis investigates federal and …

1. Geodetic Constraints On Slip Rates Of Large Central Asian Faults 2. Earthquake Emergency Education In Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Solmaz Mohadjer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

1. Geodetic constraints on slip rates of large Central Asian faults Deformation throughout the Hindu Kush-Pamir-South Tien Shan section of the Alpine-Himalayan collision, as measured with GPS, shares characteristics in common with neighboring regions in Iran and Tibet, particularly the presence of numerous large faults with relatively low slip rates and large areas of distributed high elevation, suggesting similarities in regional dynamics. The convergence rate between India and Eurasia across this region is 27 ± 2 mm/yr, accommodated over more than 500,000 km2 on thrust faulting north of the Peshawar Basin, the Hindu Kush, and within the Pamir (12 ± …

Pressure-Temperature Evolution Of Metapelites Within The Anaconda Metamorphic Core Complex, Southwestern Montana, Erin Haney Jan 2008

Pressure-Temperature Evolution Of Metapelites Within The Anaconda Metamorphic Core Complex, Southwestern Montana, Erin Haney

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study shows the complete metamorphic evolution of metapelitic footwall rocks in the Anaconda metamorphic core complex, located in southwestern Montana. Pseudosections were constructed using the computer program THERMOCALC (v. 3.26) in conjunction with the internally consistent dataset of Holland and Powell (1998, version 5.5, updated Nov. 2003) in the model system NCKFMASH (Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3- SiO2-H2O). Microprobe data reveals that garnet is very almandine rich and contains very little manganese, thus not requiring MnO as a component in the model system. X-ray mapping of garnet within metapelites indicate only one growth phase. Petrographic analysis in conjunction with pseudosections reveal peak metamorphism …

Recreation Visitor Attitudes Towards Management-Ignited Prescribed Fires In The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, Montana, William T. Borrie, Katie Knotek, Alan E. Watson, Joshua G. Whitmore, David Turner

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Research at the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex in Montana explored differences in recreation visitors’ attitudes towards the use of management-ignited prescribed fires in the wilderness. A mail-back survey of visitors (n = 291) during the 2004 season revealed that over half of visitors would accept prescribed fires in wilderness. This support did not vary by ignition purpose: (a) to restore the natural role of fire or (b) to reduce hazardous fuels and potential for fire escaping to non-wilderness lands. Local visitors, however, were significantly more accepting of prescribed fires than non-local visitors across both ignition purposes. A smaller proportion of …

Landslide Susceptibility Zonation Gis For The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake Affected Region, Benjamin Growley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The October 8, 2005 Kashmir earthquake triggered several thousand landslides throughout the Himalaya of northern Pakistan and India. A spatial database, which included 2252 landslides, was developed and analyzed using ASTER satellite imagery and geographical information system (GIS) technology. A multi-criterion evaluation was applied to determine the significance of event-controlling parameters in triggering the landslides. The parameters included lithology, faults, slope gradient, slope aspect, elevation, land cover, rivers and roads. The results were broken down into four classes of landslide susceptibility. The results indicated that lithology had the strongest influence on landsliding, particularly when the rock is highly fractured, such …

High Crimes And Misdemeanors: Removing Public Officials From Office In Utah And The Case For Recall, Timothy Pack Jan 2008

High Crimes And Misdemeanors: Removing Public Officials From Office In Utah And The Case For Recall, Timothy Pack

Utah Law Review

The recall was born in an era of public distrust of elected officials when corruption was feared by many. Today, many Americans continue to distrust their politicians. Even though there -are methods for 'removing public officials at the state and local levels, those methods are inadequate to fulfill the needs of the people of Utah. Although it is not used frequently, it is important that recall exists as a method for removing public officials when other methods are inadequate. Recall represents the people's only alternative when the impeachment process or the Local Government Removal Statutes fail. Recall does have its …

Kelo, Parents And The Spatialization Of Color (Blindness) In The Berman-Brown Metropolitan Heterotopia, Tom I. Romero, Ii

Utah Law Review

This article opened by pointing out what on its face seemed to be inconsistencies between Justice Clarence Thomas's opinions in Kelo and Parents. As the rest of the article has attempted to demo.nstrate, however, the color consciousness and color blindness of Justice Thomas in each case was the predictable consequence of the spatial con~truction of metropolitan space in the period between Berman-Brown and Kelo-Parents. This era opened diffidently. Whereas Brown and subsequent school litigation. represented the potential for a fundamental challenge to White supremacy, Berman's color-blind deference to urban and metropolitan fractionalization made it increasingly difficult to overcome the multicolor …

Shari 'Ah 'S "Black Box": Civil Liability And Criminal'exposure Surrounding Shari 'Ah-Compliant Finance, David Terushalmi

Utah Law Review

Shari 'ah-compliant finance exposes financial institutions and other businesses to a host of disclosure, due diligence, and compliance issues, all of which elevate the civil liability and criminal exposure such companies otherwise factor into their business risk profiles. Preliminary legal analysis indicates that little of this increased civil and criminal exposure has been recognized, analyzed, or guarded against in any meaningful way. Rather than confronting issues material to a typical post-9/11 investor, lawyers and accountants have placed SCF in a secular "black box," immune from the exacting scrutiny required of professional advisors in the modem U.S. legal regime. -But failure …
