Artist Colonies In Europe, The United States, And Florida, Jennifer L. Aldrich Jan 2008

Artist Colonies In Europe, The United States, And Florida, Jennifer L. Aldrich

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

During the nineteenth century, an artistic trend spread across Europe. As urban centers housed the majority of professional artists, individuals and groups relocated to remote, bucolic areas to form art colonies. Artist colonies are typically defined as a group of artists, generally painters, writers, and composers who worked and lived as a community for a certain period of time. Artists left their city lifestyles as a response to urbanization and industrialization. In other words, the movement encouraged reform of social, environmental, and economic conditions to prevent the decline of true artisanship. The artistic response personified an underlying utopian theme: preservation …

Using a combination of bacterial and phage-targeted metagenomics, we analyzed two geographically remote sludge bioreactors enriched in a single bacterial species Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis (CAP). We inferred unrestricted global movement of this species and identified aquatic ecosystems as the primary environmental reservoirs facilitating dispersal. Highly related and geographically remote CAP strains differed principally in genomic regions encoding phage defense mechanisms. We found that CAP populations were high density, clonal, and nonrecombining, providing natural targets for “kill-the-winner” phage predation. Community expression analysis demonstrated that phages were consistently active in the bioreactor community. Genomic signatures linking CAP to past phage exposures were …

HIV and AIDS

The present study was undertaken by the Population Council in partnership with Annamali University, Tamil Nadu, India to study the broad patterns and motivating forces driving migrant men’s mobility and the contexts that determine and influence their engaging in high-risk activities that increase their vulnerability to HIV. The results indicate large interdistrict movements of working men in Tamil Nadu with a little variation across districts and greater mobility among younger men. Research results suggest that further examination of the contract system under which many of the migratory laborers work is a potential focus for program intervention. Places of origin offer …

Removing Long-Term Errors From The Avhrr Observation Based On Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (Ndvi), Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Atiqur Rahman, Felix Kogan, Runa Jesmin

Publications and Research

This paper investigates Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) stability in the NOAA/NESDIS Global Vegetation Index (GVI) data during 1982-2003. Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) weekly data for the five NOAA afternoon satellites for the China dataset is studied, for it includes a wide variety of different ecosystems represented globally. It was found that data for the years 1988, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2000 are not stable enough compared to other years because of satellite orbit drift, and AVHRR sensor degradation. It is assumed that data from NOAA-7 (1982, 1983), NOAA-9 (1985, 1986), NOAA-11 (1989, 1990), NOAA-14 (1996, 1997), …

Reading Nairobi: Place, Space, And Difference At The 2007 World Social Forum, Conway Jan 2008

Reading Nairobi: Place, Space, And Difference At The 2007 World Social Forum, Conway

Societies Without Borders

The author seeks to elaborate an approach to more adequately analyze the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, both as somewhat coherent global political process while also recognizing the exploding plurality of the WSF as a multi-faceted phenomenon. He presents an interpretative framework that allows for different and intersecting levels of analysis. To assess the significance of the Nairobi event in Africa, he situates it in the history of the WSF process.

Freeing Software And Opening Space: Social Forums And The Cultural Politics Of Technology, Juris, Giuseppe Caruso

Societies Without Borders

The authors highlight how the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, has unexpected consequences for communications. They particularly explore what they refer to as the cultural politics of technology within the social forums through a comparative analysis of the political goals and struggles associated with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use within the global, European and the U.S. social forum processes.

The Us Social Forum: Building From The Bottom Up, Guerrero

Societies Without Borders

The article deals with the 2007 U.S. Social Forum (USSF). It particularly looks at the historical significance of the USSF. It argues that the USSF signified a turning point in both the emerging social movements within the U.S. and perhaps the global social forum process as well. It then discusses the salient characteristics of the USSF. It also traces how the USSF was organized by a sector of grassroots organizations largely overlooked in national politics.

The Meaning Of The Us Social Forum: A Reply To Whitaker And Bello's Debate On The Open Space, Ponniah

Societies Without Borders

The article looks at the actual achievements of the U.S. Social Forum (USFF) in order to assess the differing positions of Walden Bello and Chico Whitaker, both representatives on the International Council of the World Social Forum (WFS). Bello argued that the Forum's open space methodology refuses to take a collective stand on any issues even on concerns as the war on Iraq. Meanwhile, Whitaker noted that the open space methodology left possible the opportunity for movements to independently build global coalitions that produced common manifestos.

From Exclusion To Containment: Arendt, Sovereign Power, And Statelessness, Hayden Jan 2008

From Exclusion To Containment: Arendt, Sovereign Power, And Statelessness, Hayden

Societies Without Borders

Taking up Hannah Arendt's analysis of statelessness and her critique of sovereign power, this paper argues that the condition of 'rightlessness' has become normalized within the international order. In contrast to claims that globalization has undermined sovereignty, Arendt's work helps to illuminate how states continue to reinforce their power to exclude and contain stateless persons while simultaneously deploying the discourse of universal human rights. Current state policies reveal that rightlessness is deeply embedded within the logic of the inter-state system. In a globalizing world where states are increasingly called upon to conform to universal standards of human rights, millions of …

The Impact Of Recurring Natural Disasters On Chronic Poverty, Anwar Jan 2008

The Impact Of Recurring Natural Disasters On Chronic Poverty, Anwar

Societies Without Borders

Natural disasters disorder the existing everyday normative practices. The magnitude of any disaster creates risk and vulnerability in different ways that apply to different groups. The consequences of material and non-material risk and vulnerability downgrade the existing social structure and social order of the society, which reflects in the process of the cultural system, demographic scenario, social process, socialization, good governance and women empowerment. I use the concept "chronic poverty" as a condition created by intergenerational socio-economic and cultural processes. My analysis encompasses the interrelationship and interdependency between unequal access to resources and recovery process on the context of disaster …

Physical Properties Of The And-2a Core, Andrill Southern Mcmurdo Sound Project, Antarctica, Gavin B. Dunbar, C. Atkins, D. Magens, F. Niessen, Andrill-Sms Science Team

ANDRILL Research and Publications

Whole-core measurements of Wet Bulk Density (WBD), compressional (P)-wave velocity (Vp), and Magnetic Susceptibility were measured at a sampling interval of 1 or 2 centimetres (cm) throughout the AND-2A drill core for initial core characterisation and on-site correlation with seismic modeling to predict target-reflector depth. Measurements were made using a GEOTEK (Multi-Sensor-Core-Logger MSCL). Density and velocity standards were measured together with core runs of 3-6 metres (m) (and occasionally up to 18 m) throughout the entire depth range to monitor data quality. Drift of the magnetic susceptibility sensor was also monitored and corrected where necessary. These physical properties show a …

ANDRILL Research and Publications

Because of the paucity of exposed rock, the direct physical record of Antarctic Cenozoic glacial history has become known only recently and then largely from offshore shelf basins through seismic surveys and drilling. The number of holes on the continental shelf has been small and largely confined to three areas (McMurdo Sound, Prydz Bay, and Antarctic Peninsula), but even in McMurdo Sound, where Oligocene and early Miocene strata are well cored, the late Cenozoic is poorly known and dated. The latest Antarctic geological drilling program, ANDRILL, successfully cored a 1285-m-long record of climate history spanning the last 13 m.y. from …

Influence Of The Z'Cation Site On The B-02 And B-08 Band Lengths In Tourmaline Group Minerals, Lindsay Sochalski Jan 2008

Influence Of The Z'Cation Site On The B-02 And B-08 Band Lengths In Tourmaline Group Minerals, Lindsay Sochalski

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Tourmaline group minerals are commonly assigned chemical formulae and identified based on normalization of chemical analyses. Difficulty in measuring the lighter elements as well as the valence state of iron can lead to uncertainty when differentiating tourmaline species. For this reason, there has been a significant amount of work investigating methods to identify tourmaline species aside from normalization assumptions. Most research to date has focused on variations and site-ordering at the X-, Y- , and Z- sites. Of all the sites in the tourmaline crystal structure, however, the only site that seems to remain chemically static is the B–site, as …
