Review Of The Geography Of American Poverty: Is There A Need For Place-Based Policies? By Mark D. Partridge And Dan S. Rickman., David J. Peters

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is a comprehensive examination of poverty in the United States from 1969 to 1999. Its three main objectives are to document the uneven distribution of poverty, to explore its underlying demographic and economic determinants, and to offer policy prescriptions for its amelioration. The analysis of rural poverty is likely to be of most interest to readers of Great Plains Research.

The Geography of American Poverty authoritatively documents the trends and determinants of American poverty across both space and time. Its strength is in its quantitative analysis, but what interests poverty researchers may be tedious for nontechnical audiences. Its …

Investigating Psychosocial Well-Being Among Ethnically Diverse Rural Women: Expect The Unexpected, Rochelle L. Dalla, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Maria León

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of similarity and difference in psychosocial well-being among 42 first-generation, Spanish-speaking Latinas, 23 second-generation, English-speaking Latinas, and 25 English-speaking Caucasian women residing in five unique rural Nebraska communities. Participants completed a series of self-report survey instruments to assess indices of psychosocial health, including: marital satisfaction, marital communication, family communication, social support, and depression. Spanishspeaking Latinas and English-speaking Caucasians evidenced the greatest similarity in patterns of experience. Twenty-eight percent of the total sample (n = 25) scored above the clinical cutoff for depression. Implications and suggestions for future work are discussed.

Locating Suitable Habitats For West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes Through Association Of Environmental Characteristics With Infected Mosquito Locations: A Case Study In Shelby County, Tennessee, Esra Ozdenerol, Elzbieta Bialkowska-Jelinska, Gregory N. Taff Jan 2008

Locating Suitable Habitats For West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes Through Association Of Environmental Characteristics With Infected Mosquito Locations: A Case Study In Shelby County, Tennessee, Esra Ozdenerol, Elzbieta Bialkowska-Jelinska, Gregory N. Taff

School of Geosciences Student Publications

Background: Since its first detection in 2001, West Nile Virus (WNV) poses a significant health risk for residents of Shelby County in Tennessee. This situation forced public health officials to adopt efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. Analyses that use environmental variables to find suitable habitats for WNV-infected mosquitoes have the potential to support these efforts. Using the Mahalanobis Distance statistic, we identified areas of Shelby County that are ecologically most suitable for sustaining WNV, based on similarity of environmental characteristics to areas where WNV was found. The environmental characteristics in this study were based on …

Combating The Color-Coded Confinement Of Kids: An Equal Protection Remedy, Perry L. Moriearty

Articles

This Article considers the viability of a constitutional challenge to the disproportionate confinement of juveniles of color – a phenomenon known as “disproportionate minority contact” or “DMC.” Specifically, I ask whether, in the wake of McCleskey v. Kemp and its progeny, it is possible bring an Equal Protection claim based on statistical evidence that juveniles of color are significantly more likely to be detained by juvenile court judges than similarly-situated white youth. I argue that the nature of the juvenile detention decision places it squarely within the contours of the types of administrative decisions for which the Supreme Court has …

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley Jan 2008

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley

Honors Capstones

Melvil Dewey had a great influence on the way libraries classify books. Much research and planning was involved with his Dewey Decimal Classification System. Most school libraries today still use his classification system. Therefore, students need to gain an understanding of this system in their school careers. Research was conducted on Melvil Dewey, in order to gain more understanding about his life, his classification system, his influences, and his ideas, which are still being used in libraries today. After learning about Melvil Dewey's life and his classification system, it will be easier to teach the concepts to the students. The …

Alternative Energy Choices, Conservation, And Management: A Primer For Advanced Manufacturing Managers, Jeffrey M. Ulmer, Troy E. Ollison

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Manufacturing managers need to understand the interrelated links between advanced manufacturing technology, primary and alternative energy choices, energy output values and costs, and energy conservation over the life of a project. Through an overview of these topics and the manager’s energy conservation processing optimization model developed in this paper, manufacturing managers, engineering technologists, and academics gain greater insight to the impacts of energy technologies upon manufacturing activities.

Corruption In Bosnia And Herzegovina: After The Fall Of Communism, Jasmina Zajimovic Jan 2008

Corruption In Bosnia And Herzegovina: After The Fall Of Communism, Jasmina Zajimovic

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Corruption is evident in all transitioning countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) also struggles with this phenomenon. While in other countries corruption is a small part of the society, corruption in BiH is embedded in all aspects of life. This study examines the causes of corruption and the reasons why citizens of BiH have decided to fight corruption and criminal activity. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a truly astonishing history and people, since it has for centuries been a battle ground for countries wanting to conquer it. Besides that history, the recent civil war in the 1990s also has caused animosity, and …

Natural Disturbances And Cultural Responses On A River Island In Andhra Pradesh, Jesurathnam Devarapalli Jan 2008

Natural Disturbances And Cultural Responses On A River Island In Andhra Pradesh, Jesurathnam Devarapalli

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Ayodhya Lanka is a river island situated in Vasista Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, India. The island, due to its strategic location in the channel bed, is endowed with rich alluvial soil and provides a rich ground for fishing operations attracting both farming and fishing communities who made their permanent abode on it since times immemorial. Owing to certain special physiographical and ecological features the island possesses five ethno-ecozones (micro-environments) that are effectively managed and exploited by the islanders under the fluctuating environmental conditions. As such, the island is exposed to three important recurring natural disturbances such as perennial floods, erratic …

Landscape Aesthetics, Water, And Settler Colonialism In The Okanagan Valley Of British Columbia, John R. Wagner Jan 2008

Landscape Aesthetics, Water, And Settler Colonialism In The Okanagan Valley Of British Columbia, John R. Wagner

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Historic and contemporary patterns of settler colonialism and agricultural development in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia are described, emphasizing the ways in which settler culture has led to the production of a landscape aesthetic that reproduces colonization as an iterative cultural practice. I explore the ways in which this particular landscape aesthetic is dependent on the economic and symbolic meanings of water in Okanagan settlement history. The images of the Okanagan that were used to attract settlers to the valley a century ago emphasized the lush, oasis-like qualities of orchards and lakes set among a dramatic, arid and mountainous …

Embracing The Past: Conflict, Conservation, And Organization In Ecuador’S Upper Amazon, John S. Luque Jan 2008

Embracing The Past: Conflict, Conservation, And Organization In Ecuador’S Upper Amazon, John S. Luque

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This study explores the contested nature of relationships between indigenous communities and their representative organizations, government agencies, and international conservation organizations in conservation projects, and how the move from the Yellowstone model of parks conservation to the community participation model may lead to conflicts between competing groups. In Napo-Galeras—a transition zone between the foothills of the Andes and the Ecuadorian Oriente rainforest—land tenure arrangements led to encroachments on protected areas by in-migrating Napo Runa and mestizo colonists. The study methodology employed participant observation, semi-structured ethnographic interviews with key stakeholders, and archival research in non-governmental organizations. This study concludes that conservation …

School of Architecture Publications - Archive

Welcome to the School of Architecture. Short of spending an entire semester in the building, I think perusing this volume is the next best thing to being here. The work you will see of the students is representative of the best but the variety and quantity also attests to the depth of accomplishment - significant achievement is not found in just a few stars, but is evident across the entire student body. While the work should depict the broad range of issues, media and ideas underlying architectural thinking these days, I also think that a clear educational philosophy will be …

Florida Expressways And The Public Works Career Of Congressman William C. Cramer, Justin C. Whitney Jan 2008

Florida Expressways And The Public Works Career Of Congressman William C. Cramer, Justin C. Whitney

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Since the introduction of automobiles to Florida in the 1900s, highways have been integral to the state’s economy. In the 1950s, statewide limited-access highway projects were introduced in the form of a state-operated turnpike and the national Interstate highway system. This paper traces the simultaneous development of both expressway systems, outlining the previous condition of Florida’s highways, the initiatives taken by Florida’s governors, and especially the role of William C. Cramer of St. Petersburg, Florida’s first Republican United States Congressman since Reconstruction. In the House of Representatives, as a ranking member of the Roads Subcommittee of the Public Works Committee, …
