As argued in Chapter 1, modern management of environmental resources defines problems from a holistic and integrated perspective, thereby imposing strong requirements on Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSSs) and Integrated Assessment Tools (IATs). These systems and tools tend to be increasingly complex in terms of software architecture and computational power in order to cope with the type of problems they must solve. For instance, the discipline of Integrated Assessment (IA) needs tools that arc able to span a wide range of disciplines, from socio-economics to ecology to hydrology. Such tools must support a wide range of methodologies and techniques like …

Foreword Latcrit Xii - The Critical Locality And The Processes Of Community, Charles R.P. Pouncy
St. Thomas Law Review
The foreword to each annual LatCrit Conference Symposium is a document that generally attempts to situate the current Symposium within the parameters of LatCrit and outsider jurisprudence discourse. In addition to examining the role that the current Symposium plays in the elaboration of LatCrit theory and praxis, part of the task of the foreword calls for reflection on the evolution of the LatCrit project and its future development. This foreword will examine the relationship of the Symposium contributions to the themes of LatCrit XII and to the perennial issues that LatCrit conferences and theory attempt to engage. This foreword, however, …

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports
Understanding the interactions between climate, fire and forest characteristics-- and how carbon dynamics are affected by these factors--remains an important challenge in ecology. As the size and severity of fires in the western US continues to increase (Westerling et al. 2006), it has become increasingly important to understand carbon dynamics in response to fire. In this study, we investigated these key interactions in the landscape of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). We asked how initial post-fire heterogeneity in forest structure (especially tree density and stand age) controls carbon dynamics over the full life cycle of individual forest stands, and how climate-mediated …

The Other Side Of Metamorphosis: An Exploratory Study Of How Partners Of Transsexuals Experience Transition, Kara Harvey
The Other Side Of Metamorphosis: An Exploratory Study Of How Partners Of Transsexuals Experience Transition, Kara Harvey
Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology
Interest in, and research within, transgender studies has exploded in recent years. The majority of the research, however, has focused primarily on the experience of transsexuals1 themselves. Romantic partners of transsexuals, though, have remained unexplored within the literature. Details of their experiences in the romantic relationship and during their partners’ transitions have yet to be investigated within scholarly research.

The Visible Hand And The New American Biology: Toward An Integrated Historiography Of Railroad-Supported Agricultural Research, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
In the early twentieth century, American railroad companies faced new challenges. The railroad network had developed fully, broad political opposition was gaining teeth in new, enforceable federal legislation, and financial markets-first established to support railroad expansion- had begun to move beyond railroads. Railroad companies answered with a wide range of new managerial and scientific practices. Recent scholarship that goes beyond the traditional disciplinary separation of technological, political, managerial, economic, and scientific concerns has enabled historians to recognize that agricultural research pursued in concert with other institutions empowered railroads to address all of these challenges in the period between 1900 and …

Business Conference Papers
This paper outlines a model developed in a partnership between a university business school and a state government education department. The model is based on an environment of experiential learning within a marketing research unit for university students and provides market information for primary and secondary school principals to facilitate the development of their school marketing plans. The paper also discusses the development of expertise in the researching of local educational needs, by a community’s education sector, with a view to establishing long term, mutually beneficial relationships.
Transportation Security Framework For A Medium-Sized City, Ryan Fries, Mashrur Chowdhury, Anne Dunning
Transportation Security Framework For A Medium-Sized City, Ryan Fries, Mashrur Chowdhury, Anne Dunning
Publications
Terrorist attacks have made security preparedness unquestionably necessary in all cities. While major metropolitan areas have long recognized that their global visibility has required strong security operations, many medium-sized cities, specifically those of the U.S. and European Union, now face the need to establish transportation security frameworks for the first time. This paper assesses the resources available to help medium-sized cities begin the task of creating such systems. This assessment presents infrastructure risk assessment tools, identifies infrastructure and funding resources, and creates a process for developing a security framework to connect agencies responsible for transportation security in these metropolitan areas. …

Evaluating The Chicago Brownfields Initiative: The Effects Of City-Initiated Brownfield Redevelopment On Surrounding Communities, Jessica Higgins
Evaluating The Chicago Brownfields Initiative: The Effects Of City-Initiated Brownfield Redevelopment On Surrounding Communities, Jessica Higgins
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
This article examines the Chicago Brownfields Initiative and its effect on the communities in which brownfield redevelopment has already occurred. After examining the many federal, state, and local brownfields programs, it critically examines both the successes and concerns of the Chicago Brownfields Initiative. The successes include job creation and retention, residential redevelopment, improvements to quality of life, services and amenities provided, encouragement of additional investment, increased tax revenues for local governments, and increased environmental health and safety. The concerns include whether the jobs generated benefit the members of the brownfield communities, whether the new services and improvements benefit members of …
Minorities, Mediation, And Method: The View From One Court-Connected Mediation Program, Phyllis E. Bernard
Minorities, Mediation, And Method: The View From One Court-Connected Mediation Program, Phyllis E. Bernard
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This Article addresses cross-cultural dynamics in small claims court mediations in Oklahoma City (1 million population). Through the study of about 300 cases, the author concludes that (1) minority status may not matter as much as gender, (2) neither gender nor minority status may matter as much as socio-economic class, and (3) well-constructed and constantly monitored mediator training and supervision may make for fairer small claims cases where mediation is seen as adjunct to judge's role. The author urges reconsideration of critical race theory critiques of mediation and ultimately concludes that just mediation proceedings require addressing individuals' lack of knowledge.

Course Description This course introduces you to methodical, inductive Bible study and to the message and significance of the Gospel of Mark, with emphasis upon understanding biblical books as wholes. By the study of Mark’s Gospel itself, the course helps you gain and hone skills necessary for using inductive Scripture study in life and ministry. When I took a similar course here at Asbury it changed forever my approach to Scripture study. That class gave me tools without which I would not want to attempt Christian ministry. This is not my first experience teaching NT(IBS)511 as an ExL class. Even …

The History Of The Unl Water Center From 1964, Water Center, School Of Natural Resources
Nebraska Water Center: Administrative Materials
Water is an integral part of Nebraska’s economy and well being in a state that depends on an adequate supply for all uses, including agricultural, municipal, industrial, recreational and wildlife habitat.
Nebraska is fortunate with regard to its water supply, having tremendous groundwater reserves which are estimated to be in excess of two billion acrefeet (an acre-foot being enough water to cover one acre of land with a foot of water, or approximately 325,000 gallons), combined with an estimated annual precipitation of 86 million acre-feet and annual average surface water inflows of 1.7 million acre-feet, give the state adequate supplies …

Using Children's Literature To Teach The Social Studies Ohio Academic Content Standards, James Shiveley, Ronald G. Helms Ph.D.
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
This book addresses a need by recommending quality children’s literature books that are aligned with specific Ohio Academic Content Standard for the Social Studies for grades K – 5. Our intent is to assist teachers in merging what they know to be interesting and constructive pedagogy with outcomes-based standards. Such a resource can help teachers move along a continuum toward using interesting fiction and non-fiction narratives that help students learn more social studies content, retain it longer, and transfer it to new settings. Hopefully, an additional benefit will be an overall increase in the level of interest that students will …

Roman Isis And The Pendulum Of Tolerance In The Empire, D. Jasmine Merced-Ownbey
Roman Isis And The Pendulum Of Tolerance In The Empire, D. Jasmine Merced-Ownbey
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper examines the evolution of Isis, ostensibly the "sacred mother," as a political tool in Egypt and (especially) in Rome. Through an analysis of primary and secondary source materials, it is established that Isis' treatment by Roman politicians represented a running discourse on the contemporary political relationship between Rome and Egypt, and, at times, on Rome's complex negotiation of foreign influences on its own society. Following the deaths of the first two Roman emperors, Isis was gradually elevated from the status of pariah to an acclaimed goddess within the Roman pantheon who was deemed worthy of beneficence and protection …

Population Abundance And Growth Rate Of Western Gray Whales Eschrichtius Robustus, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Paul R. Wade, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
The western population of gray whales Eschrichtius robustus is one of the most endangered whale populations in the world. Recent studies of this population off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia, have produced a photographic dataset that was utilized for the first mark-recapture assessment of western gray whale abundance. Given encounter histories of 129 individually identified whales spanning 25 monthly capture occasions from 1997 to 2003, a closed capture estimator was employed to estimate the number of individuals using the study area in each year. Temporary emigration probabilities were then applied to the closed capture estimates to enumerate the …
Jesus’ Use Of Social Power In Honour–Shame Conflicts: A Model For Male–Female Interactions, Marykate Morse
Jesus’ Use Of Social Power In Honour–Shame Conflicts: A Model For Male–Female Interactions, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Because social power is interpersonal, it is exercised in physical space. Edward Hall distinguishes between public, social, personal, and intimate space by the distance that individuals maintain from each other in that space. Soja describes the concept of space as either a geophysical reality, a mental-symbolic reality, or a social reality. Power is a physically perceived, socially-negotiated construct based on mental perceptions of authority and value in a group. Jesus regularly exercised his power in social settings to challenge traditional group norms. One of the norms challenged was the objectification of women in male honour-shame conflicts. In this paper I …
