History Of The Life Science Museum Movement At Brigham Young University 1900–2008, Wilmer W. Tanner

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This work details the century-long journey of the BYU Life Science Museum. The museum's early days began at Brigham Young Academy, where it was established by President Benjamin Cluff Jr., with collections gathered by Chester Van Buren. It then moved to the Brimhall Building and then the Grant Building, under the direction of Dr. Kent McKnight and Vera McKnight. The museum passed through the directorship of Dr. C. Lynn Hayward and then began a new phase when Monte L. Bean and his wife Birdie Bean committed to build a museum to house their collection along with the collections BYU …

Toward A Visceral Scholarship Online: Folkvine.Org And Hypermedia Ethnography, Craig Saper Jan 2008

Toward A Visceral Scholarship Online: Folkvine.Org And Hypermedia Ethnography, Craig Saper

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This essay describes an experiment in scholarly presentation and ethnographic representation. The project, called folkvine.org, focuses on folk art and artists in Florida. It specifically examines Ruby C. Williams, Taft Richardson, Diamond Jim Parker, the Scott family, and Ginger LaVoie among many other folk and outsider artists represented on the website. Design functions as a crucial aspect of the content to illuminate the sensibility of the artists and traditions explored. The visceral, visual, and sonic modes function not as ornamentation. The visceral design of scholarship, not merely an ornament or a necessarily invisible lens for scholarship, has unique advantages. This …

Caribbean-China Relations: Foreign Policy And Small State Economic Adjustment, Dana Marie Morris Jan 2008

Caribbean-China Relations: Foreign Policy And Small State Economic Adjustment, Dana Marie Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the relationship between Caribbean states and China has intensified. This dissertation argues that the Caribbean's increased engagement with China is an important component of their economic adjustment strategy that was necessitated after changes in the orientation of the international economic system that they must operate within, particularly in relation to the loss of trade preferences and the sharp decline in official development assistance.

Despite the seemingly homogenous nature of these Caribbean states there is in fact significant foreign policy variation seen vis-à-vis engagement with China. Some Caribbean states have consistently recognized China, while others have vacillated between …

The Age, Function, And Distribution Of Keyhole Structures In The Upper Susquehanna River Valley, Douglas H. Macdonald Jan 2008

The Age, Function, And Distribution Of Keyhole Structures In The Upper Susquehanna River Valley, Douglas H. Macdonald

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper provides a summary of current data regarding the age, geographical distribution, and function of keyhole structures in the upper Susquehanna River Valley of north-central Pennsylvania and south-central New York. Keyhole structures have been identified at 11 sites in the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River Valley. The feature type likely originated in the West Branch Valley from which it spread to the north, south, and east. Their main period of use was during the latter portion of the Late Woodland period, between approximately 1230 and 1670 A.D. Given the locations of the sites along major waterways, …

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy Jan 2008

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy

The Journal of e-Media Studies

By establishing an opposition between two ways of studying e-poetry: the patrimonial stance, which historicizes and canonizes a corpus and the cultural stance, which discusses e-poetry in its social context, the article makes a plea for a broad, cultural approach to electronic reading and writing. This approach defines e-poetry in terms of performance, placing a strong emphasis on the mediated and often networked environment in which e-poetry creation and reception take place. The close reading of two examples by Pierre Alferi and Eric Sadin, two prominent authors of electronic literature in France, further illustrates the idea of writing and reading …

The Folklore Muse, Frank De Caro Jan 2008

The Folklore Muse, Frank De Caro

All USU Press Publications

Folklore—the inherently creative expression, transmission, and performance of cultural traditions—has always provided a deep well of material for writers, musicians, and artists of all sorts. Folklorists usually employ descriptive and analytical prose, but they, like scholars in other social sciences, have increasingly sought new, creative and reflexive modes of discourse. Many folklorists are also creative writers, some well known as such, and the folk traditions they research often provide shape and substance to their work. This collection of creative writing grounded in folklore and its study brings together some of the best examples of such writing.

Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric, Luming Mao, Morris Young Jan 2008

Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric, Luming Mao, Morris Young

All USU Press Publications

Despite tremendous growth in attention to and scholarship about Asian Americans and their cultural work, little research has emerged that focuses directly on Asian American rhetoric. Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric addresses this need by examining the systematic, effective use of symbolic resources by Asians and Asian Americans in social, cultural, and political contexts. Such rhetoric challenges, disrupts, and transforms the dominant European American rhetoric and it commands a sense of unity or collective identity. However, such rhetoric also embodies internal differences and even contradictions, as each specific communicative situation is informed and inflected by particularizing contexts, by different relations …

Que'est-Ce Qu'une Madeleine Interactive? Chris Marker's Immemory And The Possibility Of A Digital Archive, Erika Balsom Jan 2008

Que'est-Ce Qu'une Madeleine Interactive? Chris Marker's Immemory And The Possibility Of A Digital Archive, Erika Balsom

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This essay explores Chris Marker's 1997 CD-ROM, Immemory, to examine what is at stake in Marker's embrace of new media, specifically in the spatialization of memory into an intensive trajectory decided upon by the ambulatory movements of the user, and in the changed relation between technology, memory, and the archive. Contrary to those who view the ascendance of new media as provoking a crisis in the archive due to its governing tense of a perpetual present, this essay argues that digital media can provide new possibilities of organizing our relation to the past, and can generate exciting interfaces of personal …

Sitting On A Tinderbox': Racial Conflict, Teacher Discretion And The Centralization Of Disciplinary Authority, Judith R. Kafka Jan 2008

Sitting On A Tinderbox': Racial Conflict, Teacher Discretion And The Centralization Of Disciplinary Authority, Judith R. Kafka

Publications and Research

The centralization of school discipline in the second half of the twentieth century is widely understood to be the inevitable result of court decisions granting students certain civil rights in school. This study examines the process by which school discipline became centralized in the Los Angeles City School District in the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, and finds that the locus of control over student discipline shifted from the school site to the centralized district largely in response to local pressures. Indeed, during a period of large-scale student unrest, and in an environment of widespread racial and cultural tensions, …

Development Of Dem-Based Method For Mapping Stream Power Distribution Of Southern Ontario Streams, Mariane M.D. Ferencevic Jan 2008

Development Of Dem-Based Method For Mapping Stream Power Distribution Of Southern Ontario Streams, Mariane M.D. Ferencevic

Digitized Theses

Mapping of stream power along a stream system, a known determinant of channel form and dynamics, is a valuable component of geomorphic stream assessment procedures that, unlike current methods, is physically-based, time- and cost-effective, objective and repeatable. Continuous maps of stream power can be obtained by extracting channel slope from DEMs and combining them with a discharge-drainage area function. Using the case of Highland Creek, a highly urbanized basin in Scarborough Ontario for which extensive data and background information is available, it is shown that reliable and precise stream power maps can be obtained from the Ontario provincial DEM. Local …

Dendrochronological Studies Of White Spruce In The Northern Yukon, Canada, Sean Patrick Earles Jan 2008

Dendrochronological Studies Of White Spruce In The Northern Yukon, Canada, Sean Patrick Earles

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates the variation of ring widths from 23 white spruce (Picea glauca) treeline chronologies located along the Dempster Highway (61-68°N), bracketing the position of the classical TTHH site (65.33°N) in the Yukon. Relationships between the 18 strongest chronologies and mean monthly/seasonal temperatures from Dawson over the 1900-2000 period were examined using correlation analyses. Ring-width chronologies were commonly negatively correlated with prior summer temperatures over the entire 20th century but most strongly in the 1950-2000 period. However, several sites had positive relationships with summer temperatures in the 1900-1950 period and much weaker or negative relationships with summer temperatures over …

Digitized Theses

This qualitative study explores the perceptions of the impacts of a proposed probiotic yogurt project on community relations in the Mahina community, Mwanza, Tanzania with the following objectives: to identify participants’ perceptions of probiotic yogurt and health; to examine project needs and facilitators; and to explore perceived barriers to project implementation in the context of community relations and gender roles. In-depth interviews (n=26) were conducted with residents and the analysis was informed by the literature on concepts of health, gender and development. The results revealed participants’ conceptions and misconceptions of probiotic yogurt including a misleading popular perceptions that probiotics can …

Children’S Geography And The Everyday Lives Of Orphans In Malawi, Liam John Riley Jan 2008

Children’S Geography And The Everyday Lives Of Orphans In Malawi, Liam John Riley

Digitized Theses

Malawi has almost one million orphans; half of whom were orphaned because of AIDS. The situation is often framed as an ‘orphan crisis,’ which is a problematic concept because of the shifting definitions of orphanhood, the cultural connotations of abandonment and helplessness associated with orphanhood, and the diversity of causes and experiences of orphanhood. This thesis sets out to challenge assumptions about childhood and domesticity that are often embedded in discussions of orphanhood in Malawi through a methodological approach grounded in children’s geography that views children as social actors. The research, which is focused on orphans’ daily lives and perspectives, …

Environmental Justice In Canada: The Statistical Correlation Between Socioeconomic Status And Pollution In Five Major Canadian Cities, Nilima Bhoi Jan 2008

Environmental Justice In Canada: The Statistical Correlation Between Socioeconomic Status And Pollution In Five Major Canadian Cities, Nilima Bhoi

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the existence of environmental injustice in five Canadian census metropolitan areas (CMA): Edmonton, London, Montreal, Toronto and Victoria. Spatial/distributive environmental injustice refers to situations where specific, already disadvantaged, groups bear a disproportionate share of pollution exposure. Several studies in the United States have found that pollution is often more prevalent in areas that are predominantly low income backgrounds or are visible minorities (UCC, 1987; Mohai and Bryant, 1992; Szasz and Meuser, 1997; Ringquist, 2005). Though there are limitations to the ecological approach typically used in these cases, important lessons from the US research (e.g., Bowen, 2000; Maantay …

Identifying Influences Of Social And Physical Environments On A Child’S Mode Of Travel To And From School, Kristian Larsen Jan 2008

Identifying Influences Of Social And Physical Environments On A Child’S Mode Of Travel To And From School, Kristian Larsen

Digitized Theses

This study examined environmental influences on a child’s mode of travel between home and school. Students (n=614) from 21 schools throughout London, Ontario, completed a school-based travel survey. A Geographic Information System was used to link survey respondents to data on environmental characteristics around home and school neighbourhoods, and along the probable route to school. Logistic regression analysis tested the influence of environmental factors on mode of travel to and from school. Over 62 percent of students walked/biked to school and 72 percent home from school. The likelihood of actively commuting was associated with shorter trips, residential density, land use …
