Climate Change: The Equity Problem, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Brooke A. Ackerly Apr 2008

Climate Change: The Equity Problem, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Brooke A. Ackerly

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A substantial proportion of the United States population is at or below the poverty level, yet many of the greenhouse gas emissions reduction measures proposed or adopted to date will increase the costs of energy, motor vehicles, and other consumer goods. This essay suggests that although scholarship and policymaking to date have focused on the disproportionate impact of these increased costs on the low-income population, the costs will have two important additional effects. First, the anticipated costs will generate political opposition from social justice groups, reducing the likelihood that aggressive measures will be adopted. Second, to the extent aggressive measures …

The Moving Landscape: Perspectives On Place, Emily Goughary Apr 2008

The Moving Landscape: Perspectives On Place, Emily Goughary

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The discourses of place, identity, and modernity have been thoroughly nuanced in development literature, though perhaps not through the lens that I am proposing to view them. My aim in conducting research on identity of place and by what processes they might be constructed is to examine the cultural knowledge and perception by which places are rendered meaningful. An important aspect of this type of research includes observing what processes of place and of the world outside a place influence the construction of the perceptions of modernity or progress. The nature of this research demands that it be done on …

Law Enforcement In Subordinated Communities: Innovation And Response, Richard Delgado Apr 2008

Law Enforcement In Subordinated Communities: Innovation And Response, Richard Delgado

Michigan Law Review

Policing styles and policy reform today exhibit a ferment that we have not seen since the turbulent sixties. The reasons propelling reform include some of the same forces that propelled it then - minority communities agitating for a greater voice, demands for law and order - but also some that are new, such as the greater premium that society places on security in a post-9/11 world. Three recent books discuss this new emphasis on styles of policing. Each centers on policing in minority communities. Steve Herbert's Citizens, Cops, and Power: Recognizing the Limits of Community examines the innovation known as …

Interspecific Competition Between Diadegma Semiclausum Hellen And Diadegma Mollipla (Holmgren), Parasitoids Of The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L), Feeding On A New Host Plant, A. Rossbach, B. Löhr, S. Vidal Apr 2008

Interspecific Competition Between Diadegma Semiclausum Hellen And Diadegma Mollipla (Holmgren), Parasitoids Of The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L), Feeding On A New Host Plant, A. Rossbach, B. Löhr, S. Vidal

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Interspecific competition between an introduced parasitoid species aimed at controlling a herbivorous pest species and a native parasitoid parasitising the same host may influence the success of classical biological control programmes. In Kenya, interspecific competition between an introduced and a local parasitoid on two diamondback moth populations (DBM, Plutella xylostella) was investigated on two different host plants. We tested simultaneous and delayed competition of the local parasitoid Diadegma mollipla Holmgren and its exotic congenus D. semiclausum Hellen on a newly aquired DBM host plant (snowpea) in the laboratory. Under simultaneous competition, D. mollipla produced more progeny than D. semiclausum on …

What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Mass Torts?, Anthony J. Sebok Apr 2008

What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Mass Torts?, Anthony J. Sebok

Articles

The article examines the challenges posed by mass torts, particularly the impact of temporal dispersal and latency of injuries, which create significant uncertainties in settlement values. Nagareda critiques the traditional approaches to mass torts—focusing on procedure, substance, and ethics—and proposes a shift toward an administrative framework. He argues that leveraging the self-interest of plaintiffs' lawyers through a fee redistribution mechanism could address settlement dysfunctions, particularly the disparity between present and future claimants. However, the article questions whether this proposal adequately addresses the broader issues in mass tort litigation, especially in immature torts.

Virginia Standards Of Learning: An Analysis Of Sociodemographic Effects On Exam Passing Rates, Anne E. Foster Apr 2008

Virginia Standards Of Learning: An Analysis Of Sociodemographic Effects On Exam Passing Rates, Anne E. Foster

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study proposed to analyze the effects that sociodemographic variables have on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) exam passing rates. By analyzing Census data along with passing rates from the Virginia Department of Education, the researcher determined if the independent variables white, non-white, poverty, female-headed household and foreign born explained variance in the SOL passing rates. By using linear regressions for each independent variable as well as a regression for a combination of the independent variables, the researcher was able to show the amount of variance that was explained. The results confirm that variance was present in each test subject …

Barriers To Rural Mental Health Care: Perspectives From Those Who Live There, Amanda R. Turlington Apr 2008

Barriers To Rural Mental Health Care: Perspectives From Those Who Live There, Amanda R. Turlington

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This research evaluated barriers to mental health care according to the perceptions o f rural dwellers. A survey was mailed to randomly selected registered voters in Lincoln County, Washington, in order to assess their perceptions of barriers to mental health care. The survey consisted of a request for demographic information, Lik:ert-style questions, and forced-choice responses that inquired about barriers to mental health care from the rural respondent' s perspective. Response patterns were then compared to (a) historical factors identified as barriers to mental health care: transportation, cost, accessibility, stigma, and self-reliance, and (b) the additional factors: distrust of outsiders, rural …

Life And Landscapes In The Post-Office Communities Of Holt County, Nebraska, Rebecca A. Buller

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Thumb through the pages of a DeLorme gazetteer of any Great Plains state .and you will find small black diamonds, each with its own place-name, scattered throughout the large-scale maps. For those who are familiar with the area, the existence of some of the diamonds, supposedly marking the location of a community, can be confusing since these markers do not represent contemporary towns. Additionally, when you travel country roads in rural areas of the Great Plains you will stumble upon markers that identify a nearby post office, which, also no longer exists. What do these diamonds on the map represent? …

The Shadows Of Future Generations, Matthew W. Wolfe Apr 2008

The Shadows Of Future Generations, Matthew W. Wolfe

Duke Law Journal

This Note addresses the twin problems of political short-termism and intergenerational equity. Although scholars have discussed these concerns extensively, few scholars have developed proposals to modify democratic institutions-particularly legislatures-to better consider posterity's interests. This Note critiques one such set of proposals by several environmental ethicists for including posterity-oriented legislators in present-generation legislatures. It then proposes a system that ties the long-term outcomes of legislators' policy preferences to their pension plans by creating a new commodities market that values the decisions legislators make and their effect on posterity.

Constraining The Amplitude Of Late Oligocene Bathymetric Changes In Western Ross Sea During Orbitally-Induced Oscillations In The East Antarctic Ice Sheet: (1) Implications For Glacimarine Sequence Stratigraphic Models, Gavin B. Dunbar, T. R. Naish, Peter J. Barrett, Christopher R. Fielding, R. D. Powell

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Abstract Late Oligocene shallow glacimarine sequences recovered from western Ross Sea, Antarctica by the Cape Roberts (drilling) Project display orbitally-influenced cycles of advance and retreat of a laterally-extensive ice sheet across the continental shelf, in concert with changes in contemporary water-depth. During interglacial periods, when the glacier terminated on land, the coastline was largely ice-free and wave-influenced, and sediments accumulated in hydrodynamic equilibrium with the contemporary wave-climate. Here, we present estimates of paleobathymetry from intervals of three Milankovitch-duration glacimarine sequences (9, 10 and 11) that accumulated in open ocean conditions. We utilize an approach where the percentage of mud ( …

Four Failures Of Deliberating Groups, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie Apr 2008

Four Failures Of Deliberating Groups, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Many groups make their decisions through some process of deliberation, usually with the belief that deliberation will improve judgments and predictions. But deliberating groups often fail, in the sense that they make judgments that are false or that fail to take advantage of the information that their members have. There are four such failures. (1) Sometimes the predeliberation errors of group members are amplified, not merely propagated, as a result of deliberation. (2) Groups may fall victim to cascade effects, as the judgments of initial speakers or actors are followed by their successors, who do not disclose what they know. …

Measurement And Estimation Of Network Qos Among Peer Xbox 360 Game Players, Youngki Lee, Sharad Agarwal, Chris Butcher, Jitu Padhye

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The research community has proposed several techniques for estimating the quality of network paths in terms of delay and capacity. However, few techniques have been studied in the context of large deployed applications. Network gaming is an application that is extremely sensitive to network path quality [1,2,3]. Yet, the quality of network paths among players of large, wide-area games and techniques for estimating it have not received much attention from the research community.

Using Composite Sampling Techniques To Monitor Bathing Beach Water Quality In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jeffrey David Reicherts Apr 2008

Using Composite Sampling Techniques To Monitor Bathing Beach Water Quality In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jeffrey David Reicherts

Masters Theses

The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department conducts water quality monitoring at public bathing beaches to determine public health risks and compliance with Michigan water quality standards. These standards require local health departments to collect and analyze a minimum of three water samples during each sampling event. Water samples are analyzed for Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, an organism that indicates the presence of fecal contamination. During the 2007 sampling season, nine bathing beaches were monitored once each week. Three individual point samples (n = 486) and a composite sample (n = 144) were analyzed for each sampling …
