Artist Ranking Through Analysis Of On-Line Community Comments, Julia Grace, Daniel Gruhl, Kevin Haas, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Christine Robson, Nachiketa Sahoo

Kno.e.sis Publications

We describe an approach to measure the popularity of music tracks, albums and artists by analyzing the comments of music listeners in social networking online communities such as MySpace. This measure of popularity appears to be more accurate than the traditional measure based on album sales figures, as demonstrated by our focus group study. We faced many challenges in our attempt to generate a popularity ranking from the user comments on social networking sites, e.g., broken English sentences, comment spam, etc. We discuss the steps we took to overcome these challenges and describe an end to end system for generating …

Is The Cheating Risk Always Higher In Online Instruction Compared To Face-To-Face Instruction?, Oskar Harmon, James Lambrinos, Judy Buffolino

Economics Working Papers

This article analyzes the exposure to cheating risk of online courses relative to face-to-face courses at a single institution. For our sample of 20 online courses we report that the cheating risk is higher than for equivalent face-to-face courses because of reliance on un-proctored multiple choice exams. We conclude that the combination of a proctored final exam, and strategic use cheating deterrents in the administration of un-proctored multiple choice exams, would significantly reduce the cheating risk differential without substantially altering the assessment design of online instruction.

Understanding Racial Segregation: What Is Known About The Effect Of Housing Discrimination, Stephen L. Ross Apr 2008

Understanding Racial Segregation: What Is Known About The Effect Of Housing Discrimination, Stephen L. Ross

Economics Working Papers

A central purpose of this chapter is to assess whether the available empirical evidence supports the view that current levels of housing discrimination are a significant contributor to residential segregation in U.S. cities and metropolitan areas. Through the course of this chapter, the reader will find that the empirical patterns of racial segregation in the U.S. are often inconsistent the available evidence on housing discrimination. Admittedly, strong evidence exists that both housing discrimination exists today and that housing discrimination throughout much of the Twentieth Century was central to creating the high levels of segregation that we observe in U.S. metropolitan …

Extending The Security Net The Impact Of Rangeland Insurance On Ranching Economy And Culture, Rex J. Rowley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Humans have a complex relationship with the land. At the base of it lies our need for what the land can give: materials for shelter, food and water for sustenance, and scenic beauty for pleasure. But, similar to our interactions with other humans, our relationship with the land is not always perfect. The land can often be our worst enemy. Storm, drought, famine, and pestilence are common words from the historical record representing times when this connection between humans and nature is challenged.

Crop insurance is a relatively recent invention that attempts to level the playing field in our contest …

Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando Apr 2008

Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

These lyrics capture a yearning for a place to call home. But what landscape is associated with this longing? For people living near the coasts or mountains of America, it must be hard to imagine longing for a "home on the plains"-but many Americans have had, and still have, a home on the Plains. The stereotypical American image of the Plains is flatness, austerity, emptiness. Not all would consider this an ideal landscape for home. So how did the people who settled on the Plains "view" this landscape? What did they see? How did this land come to be recognized …

Review Of Of This Earth: A Mennonite Boyhood In The Boreal Forest By Rudy Wiebe, Hildi Froese Tiessen Apr 2008

Review Of Of This Earth: A Mennonite Boyhood In The Boreal Forest By Rudy Wiebe, Hildi Froese Tiessen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Rudy Wiebe, author of nine novels and three collections of stories as well as numerous other works, is best known for his historical fiction-particularly for novels featuring Canada's Native peoples. A first-generation Canadian whose German-speaking Mennonite parents fled Stalinist Ukraine in 1929 and then homesteaded in Saskatchewan, Wiebe has tended to set his fiction on the prairies or in the north. Appalled by the prevailing view that the Plains were "empty" before European immigrants arrived, he has consistently worked to document the repressed history of Canada. His writing has focused not only on the First Nations of his native land, …

The Legal World Is Flat: Globalization And Its Effect On Lawyers Practicing In Non-Global Law Firms, Laurel Terry Apr 2008

The Legal World Is Flat: Globalization And Its Effect On Lawyers Practicing In Non-Global Law Firms, Laurel Terry

Faculty Scholarly Works

While lawyers in these large global law firms usually are aware of why globalization is relevant to them, other U.S. lawyers may not think that the globalization phenomenon affects them. A comment frequently heard is "Law is local so I don't have to worry about globalization affecting me or my practice." The goal of this article is to look at Friedman's work through the lens of legal services and to answer several questions, including: Whether Friedman's analysis is relevant to what has happened in the field of legal services; Whether a U.S. lawyer who doesn't practice in a global law …

Evaluating Roads As Investments: A Primer On Benefit-Cost And Economic-Impact Analysis, Eric Thompson, David Rosenbaum, Arthur Hall Apr 2008

Evaluating Roads As Investments: A Primer On Benefit-Cost And Economic-Impact Analysis, Eric Thompson, David Rosenbaum, Arthur Hall

Bureau of Business Research Publications

Kansas and neighboring states spend billions of dollars on roads. Do the huge expenditures represent good investments? The taxpaying public will never know because public decision makers rarely analyze road projects as investments. A disciplined use of benefit-cost analysis can close this knowledge gap.

Roadways constitute an economically vital form of transportation infrastructure that have the potential to contribute to the productivity and economic growth of state economies—if the economic benefits of the roadways exceed their cost. Benefit-cost analysis totals the annual user benefits derived from road projects and compares these benefits with the total costs related to construction. The …

Lost In Translation? International Students And Non-English Information Literacy, Ethan Pullman Apr 2008

Lost In Translation? International Students And Non-English Information Literacy, Ethan Pullman

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

The University of Pittsburgh has a substantial community of international students. The library has long been collaborating with the Office of International Students, which helps international students assimilate to university life, in order to provide them with information literacy training specific to their needs. Looking for innovation in addressing the changing needs of our users, librarians recently offered information literacy sessions in several languages to help alleviate stress experienced by international students due to their new environment and language skills so they can focus on addressing immediate research needs. Student demographics and availability of skilled librarians determine the choice of …

Has Thailand Learned From The Asian Crisis Of 1997?, Kuejai Jungjaturapit Apr 2008

Has Thailand Learned From The Asian Crisis Of 1997?, Kuejai Jungjaturapit

Major Themes in Economics

Many economists have investigated the causes of the Asian crisis of 1997 in order to prevent a repeat of it. There were many issues leading to the crisis, and there is no agreement on what all the causes were. I conclude that for the case of Thailand, there were three main causes: exchange rate policy, weak financial institutions, and actions of the government. The crisis is analyzed, and the results are used to suggest ways to prevent future unnecessary recessions. Finally, the current situation in Thailand is examined to determine whether Thailand has learned from the crisis and made any …

The Influence Of Medicinal Plants On The Spiritism, Religion, And Science Of Tulear, Madagascar, Meghan Sweet

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Medicinal plants are polyvalent remedies used in industry and medicine. They have curative and preventative powers when used internally and externally on humans. They are also used for agricultural and veterinary purposes. They are necessary to the human body to give health and strength. Medicinal plants influence spiritism, religion, and science. These three worldviews make value judgments regarding medicinal plants. This study determines some limits and interdependencies of each worldview by looking at how they are influenced by medicinal plants in Tulear, Madagascar.

Hiv/Aids Treatment And Care In A Long-Term Conflict Setting: Observations From The Aids Support Organization (Taso) In The Teso Region, Emma Smith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since its emergence in the early 1980s, HIV/AIDS has come to infect 33.2 million people world wide, over two thirds of whom (68%) reside in sub-Saharan Africai. While great strides have been taken in terms of global awareness, research, treatment and care accessibility, the epidemic remains severe and many of those infected, especially those in sub-Saharan African nations, face the continued challenges of stigma and discrimination, limited medical resources, insufficient care, insurmountable costs and great distances to treatment area. When the individual case of Uganda is examined, it is encouraging to note that HIV prevalence has declined significantly since the …

Four Failures Of Deliberating Groups, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie Apr 2008

Four Failures Of Deliberating Groups, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Many groups make their decisions through some process of deliberation, usually with the belief that deliberation will improve judgments and predictions. But deliberating groups often fail, in the sense that they make judgments that are false or that fail to take advantage of the information that their members have. There are four such failures. (1) Sometimes the predeliberation errors of group members are amplified, not merely propagated, as a result of deliberation. (2) Groups may fall victim to cascade effects, as the judgments of initial speakers or actors are followed by their successors, who do not disclose what they know. …
