Ken Saro-Wiwa’S Africana Womanist Vision Of Environmental Justice, Julie Iromuanya
Ken Saro-Wiwa’S Africana Womanist Vision Of Environmental Justice, Julie Iromuanya
James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities
My paper examines the feminist poetics of Ken Saro-Wiwa’s methodology of protest. Utilizing a gendered pathos, Saro-Wiwa evoked the female body as a metaphor, signaling a connection between the colonization of the land, indigenous peoples, and women in his speech. In the organization of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), he also utilized traditional West African systems that valued a complementary Africana womanist vision of community. In addition, the demonstration he is most remembered for is distinctly patterned after traditional West African female methods of protest. During the 1990’s, already as an established writer, Saro-Wiwa honed his …

Indigenous Ecology And Chicanada Coalition Building In The Dramatic Works Of Cherríe Moraga: “Living Models” For A Sustainable Future, Paula Straile-Costa
Indigenous Ecology And Chicanada Coalition Building In The Dramatic Works Of Cherríe Moraga: “Living Models” For A Sustainable Future, Paula Straile-Costa
NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Abstract:
This study focuses on three recent dramatic works by Cherríe Moraga’s written in the same period as her essay and poetry collection, The Last Generation. Heroes and Saints, Watsonville: Some Place Not Here, and Circle in the Dirt: El Pueblo de East Palo Alto draw from indigenous ecology and the historical archive of Chicano struggle that provide models for a sustainable future she envisions. The author shifts from poetry and essay - the lyrical, reflective mode of self-inquiry and expression for which she is so well known – to a collective dramatic dialogue allowing her to …

Demographics Of Natural Disaster Hotspots In Maine, Lindsay Dreiss ('09), Caitlin Dufraine ('09)
Demographics Of Natural Disaster Hotspots In Maine, Lindsay Dreiss ('09), Caitlin Dufraine ('09)
Atlas of Maine
Natural disasters can cause extensive damage to communities and infrastructure. The state of Maine is fairly lucky because natural disasters are relatively infrequent. Maine does, however, experience earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, and landslides. Certain areas of the state are more prone to experience natural disaster than others. Using GIS analysis, we are analyzing natural disaster hotspots in Maine to determine if there is a statistically significant relationship between natural disaster susceptibility and socioeconomic variables including income and population.

When the Divide Isn’t Just Digital: How Technology-Enriched Afterschool Programs Help Immigrant Youth Find a Voice, a Place, and a Future
By Rebecca A. London, Manuel Pastor, Jr., and Rachel Rosner
Of course community technology centers (CTCs) help bridge the digital divide for immigrant youth in disadvantaged neighborhoods. But a study of six CTCs in California shows that these centers also promote positive youth development for young people who are challenged to straddle two cultures. 11 pages.

Impact Of Market Ideology On Transnational Contract Law, M. Neil Browne, Jennifer Coon
Impact Of Market Ideology On Transnational Contract Law, M. Neil Browne, Jennifer Coon
Economics Faculty Publications
As world trade expands to the remotest of venues, commercial laws that encompass transnational jurisdictions become increasingly important. The appropriateness of these laws rely, inter alia, on the strength of the assumptive base supporting such transnational laws of commerce. As this article explains, transnational contract law'is not the product of the Immaculate Conception; it is the anachronistic progeny of certain European laws that emerged during the Industrial Revolution. As such, transnational contract law inherits many of the characteristics of its progenitors. Those characteristics, however, become awkward when viewed through a contemporary institutional context that diverges from the prevailing social arrangements …

Climate Change: The Equity Problem, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Brooke A. Ackerly
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
A substantial proportion of the United States population is at or below the poverty level, yet many of the greenhouse gas emissions reduction measures proposed or adopted to date will increase the costs of energy, motor vehicles, and other consumer goods. This essay suggests that although scholarship and policymaking to date have focused on the disproportionate impact of these increased costs on the low-income population, the costs will have two important additional effects. First, the anticipated costs will generate political opposition from social justice groups, reducing the likelihood that aggressive measures will be adopted. Second, to the extent aggressive measures …
Alcoa In Juruti, Brazil: A Case Of Environmental Injustice And Colonialism?, Caitlin Schroering
Alcoa In Juruti, Brazil: A Case Of Environmental Injustice And Colonialism?, Caitlin Schroering
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper examines the visions of development of Alcoa, an American bauxite mining company, and the traditional ribeirinho communities in the area of Juruti Velho, Brazil. These two objectives are pursued in order to determine if Alcoa’s actions in the area constitute environmental injustice and colonialism. An explication of environmental injustice and colonialism is undertaken, and is followed later by a discussion of social invisibility and how circumstances are created that allow for the exploitation of traditional communities. The work and demands of ACORJUVE, a community association that is in opposition to Alcoa, are also discussed. A review of the …
Putting Ethics Into Environmental Law: Fiduciary Duties For Ethical Investment, Benjamin J. Richardson
Putting Ethics Into Environmental Law: Fiduciary Duties For Ethical Investment, Benjamin J. Richardson
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article argues that environmental law must target the financial sector, which sponsors and profits from environmental pillage. The rise of a system of finance capitalism has made the financial sector a crucial economic sector. A long-standing movement for socially responsible investment (SRI) has recently begun to advocate environmental standards for financiers. While the SRI movement has gained more influence in recent years, it has come at the price of jettisoning its former emphasis on ethical investment in favour of an instrumental, business case approach. Some modest legal reforms to improve the quality and extent of SRI have yet to …
Confronting Chronic Pollution: A Socio-Legal Analysis Of Risk And Precaution, Dayna Nadine Scott
Confronting Chronic Pollution: A Socio-Legal Analysis Of Risk And Precaution, Dayna Nadine Scott
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The central aim of this article is to demonstrate a socio-legal approach to risk and precaution using the example of chronic pollution. Drawing on ongoing empirical work with the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, which is tucked into Sarnia's "Chemical Valley," a secondary aim is to influence and shape how we understand the problem and confront the risks of chronic pollution. This article forwards the argument that the prevailing regulatory approach is incapable of capturing the essence of contemporary pollution harms, because those harms are increasingly linked to continuous, routine, low-dose exposures to contaminants that are within legally sanctioned limits. Community residents …
