Ideology, Strategy And Conflict In A Social Movement Organization: The Sierra Club Immigration Wars, Leslie King Mar 2008

Ideology, Strategy And Conflict In A Social Movement Organization: The Sierra Club Immigration Wars, Leslie King

Sociology: Faculty Publications

What cultural and structural factors allow conflict in a social movement organization to persist over long periods of time? Using data gleaned from interviews, archival materials, newspaper articles and online sources, I examine the Sierra Club's conflict over immigration policy, an issue which has persisted for decades without clear resolution. I argue that ideology accounts for some activists ' position on club policy, while others based their stance on strategic concerns, which were linked in part to forces external to the club. At the same time, the democratic structure of the Sierra Club has allowed factions to continue working towards …

Urban Ecological Stewardship: Understanding The Structure, Function And Network Of Community-Based Urban Land Management, Erika Svendsen, Lindsay K. Campbell

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban environmental stewardship activities are on the rise in cities throughout the Northeast. Groups participating in stewardship activities range in age, size, and geography and represent an increasingly complex and dynamic arrangement of civil society, government and business sectors. To better understand the structure, function and network of these community-based urban land managers, an assessment was conducted in 2004 by the research subcommittee of the Urban Ecology Collaborative. The goal of the assessment was to better understand the role of stewardship organizations engaged in urban ecology initiatives in selected major cities in the Northeastern U.S.: Boston, New Haven, New York …

Underneath Kyoto: Emerging Subnational Government Initiatives And Incipient Issue-Bundling Opportunities In China And The United States, Peter Koehn Feb 2008

Underneath Kyoto: Emerging Subnational Government Initiatives And Incipient Issue-Bundling Opportunities In China And The United States, Peter Koehn

Political Science Faculty Publications

At present, progress in mitigating global GHG emissions is impeded by political stalemate at the national level in the United States and the People's Republic of China. Through the conceptual lenses of multilevel governance and framing politics, the article analyzes emerging policy initiatives among subnational governments in both countries. Effective subnational emission-mitigating action requires framing climatic-stabilization policies in terms of local co-benefits associated with environmental protection, health promotion, and economic advantage. In an impressive group of US states and cities, and increasingly at the local level in China, public concerns about air pollution, consumption and waste management, traffic congestion, health …

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone Jan 2008

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

A dasymetric map is a type of thematic map where boundaries are altered by the distribution of other phenomena. In dasymetric maps, administrative or enumeration boundaries are redrawn to better represent the distribution of data classes. Dasymetric mapping methods can improve the resolution of historical and present day census data. Using data collected for the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, I use the dasymetric approach to remap the distribution of census data based on residential land use. By overlaying census boundaries with land use and land cover information in a GIS database, census data can be partitioned into places where, from the …

23. Archeology And Civic Engagement, Barbara J. Little, Nathaniel Amdur-Clark Jan 2008

23. Archeology And Civic Engagement, Barbara J. Little, Nathaniel Amdur-Clark

United States National Park Service: Publications

In the United States and elsewhere, efforts to strengthen communities and democratic processes, as well as promote public dialogue, rely upon active citizen engagement in community and civic life through the creation of social capital. Archeology can play a role in these efforts, particularly as archeological projects increasingly involve the communities in which they occur and as archeologists recognize their ethical responsibilities to involve multiple stakeholders. This technical brief provides explanations of civic engagement and social capital as well as case studies and suggestions for ways that archeologists can participate and contribute to the creation of social capital.

Evaluating California Local Land Use Plan’S Environmental Impact Reports, Zhenghong Tang, Elise Bright, Samuel Brody Jan 2008

Evaluating California Local Land Use Plan’S Environmental Impact Reports, Zhenghong Tang, Elise Bright, Samuel Brody

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Local land use planning has profound impacts on environmental quality; however, few empirical studies have been conducted to systematically measure local land use plans’ environmental assessment quality and to identify the factors influencing it. This paper analyzes the quality of 40 Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) of local jurisdictions’ land use plans in California. A plan evaluation protocol defined by five core components and sixty-three indicators is developed to measure the quality of local land use plans’ EIRs. The descriptive results indicate that the local jurisdictions produce relatively good quality on its EIRs, but there is still much room for improvement. …

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin Jan 2008

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin

Scholarly Works

School exclusion has existed as a dark side of public education since the creation of America's public schools. Several cases in the United States Supreme Court memorably invalidated State and school system efforts to deny equal educational opportunities to marginalized school children and youth. In these cases, the over-riding multiple values of education were poignantly articulated in the majority decisions.

School exclusion has stubbornly persisted. It takes many forms. This article surveys the most prominent pathways to school exclusion, highlighting what has been called the "School-To-Prison-Pipeline." Various legal challenges are also evaluated. The pros and cons of litigating school exclusion …
