An Analysis Of Entries In The First Tac Market Design Competition, Jinzhong Niu, Kai Cai, Peter Mcburney, Simon Parsons Dec 2008

An Analysis Of Entries In The First Tac Market Design Competition, Jinzhong Niu, Kai Cai, Peter Mcburney, Simon Parsons

Publications and Research

This paper presents an analysis of entries in the first TAC Market Design Competition final that compares the entries across several scenarios. The analysis complements previous work analyzing the 2007 competition, demonstrating some vulnerabilities of entries that placed highly in the competition. The paper also suggests a simple strategy that would have performed well.

Isotopic Evidence Of Methane Oxidation Across The Surface Water–Ground Water Interface, Diego Andrés Riveros-Iregui, Jennifer Y. King Dec 2008

Isotopic Evidence Of Methane Oxidation Across The Surface Water–Ground Water Interface, Diego Andrés Riveros-Iregui, Jennifer Y. King

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Biogenic methane (CH4) from wetlands plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle, but the dynamics of dissolved methane flux across the surface water-ground water interface remain poorly understood. This study focused on the effects of spatial transformation of dissolved methane and the role of ground-water recharge in the distribution of dissolved methane across the surface water-ground water interface. Here we present carbon isotopic measurements of biogenic methane and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the Sarita Wetland, on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota, and also in six monitoring wells located down gradient from the …

Do Immigrants Counter The Effect Of Cultural Distance On Trade? Evidence From Us State-Level Exports, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Dec 2008

Do Immigrants Counter The Effect Of Cultural Distance On Trade? Evidence From Us State-Level Exports, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

We examine the effects of immigrants and cultural distance on US state-level exports, placing emphasis on the extent to which immigrants may offset the influence of cultural distance with respect to the initiation and intensification of exports. Our findings suggest that greater cultural differences between the US and immigrants’ home countries reduce both the likelihood that exporting occurs and, when exporting is taking place, the level of exports. Immigrants are found to exert pro-export effects that offset, at least partially, the trade-inhibiting effects of cultural distance. The estimated effects of both cultural distance and immigrants are found to be greater …

A Uniformly Dissipative Scheme For Stationary Statistical Properties Of The Infinite Prandtl Number Model, Wenfang (Wendy) Cheng, Xiaoming Wang Dec 2008

A Uniformly Dissipative Scheme For Stationary Statistical Properties Of The Infinite Prandtl Number Model, Wenfang (Wendy) Cheng, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of this short communication is to announce that a class of numerical schemes, uniformly dissipative approximations, which uniformly preserve the dissipativity of the continuous infinite dimensional dissipative complex (chaotic) systems possess desirable properties in terms of approximating stationary statistics properties. in particular, the stationary statistical properties of these uniformly dissipative schemes converge to those of the continuous system at vanishing mesh size. the idea is illustrated on the infinite Prandtl number model for convection and semi-discretization in time, although the general strategy works for a broad class of dissipative complex systems and fully discretized approximations. as far as …

A Semi-Implicit Scheme For Stationary Statistical Properties Of The Infinite Prandtl Number Model, Wenfang Cheng, Xiaoming Wang Dec 2008

A Semi-Implicit Scheme For Stationary Statistical Properties Of The Infinite Prandtl Number Model, Wenfang Cheng, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a semisecret in time semi-implicit numerical scheme for the infinite Prandtl model for convection. Besides the usual finite time convergence, this scheme enjoys the additional highly desirable feature that the stationary statistical properties of the scheme converge to those of the infinite Prandtl number model at vanishing time stop. One of the key characteristics of the scheme is that it preserves the dissipativity of the infinite Prandtl number model uniformly in terms of the time stop. So far as wo know, this is the first rigorous result on convergence of stationary statistical properties of numerical schemes for infinite …

Enhancing Homework’S Effectiveness Through Student Motivation And Parental Involvement, Jonathan T. Beutlich Dec 2008

Enhancing Homework’S Effectiveness Through Student Motivation And Parental Involvement, Jonathan T. Beutlich

Master of Education Program Theses

Homework has varying degrees of effectiveness; therefore, it is important for teachers to know what elements aid in making homework assignments more effective to learners. There are outside factors that contribute to homework’s effectiveness as well as types of homework assignments that will increase students’ success. Two of the factors contributing to homework’s level of benefits are student motivation and parental involvement. There are three types of homework assignments that increase the positive aspects of student motivation and parental involvement include interspersal assignments, interactive homework assignments, and project-based assignments. Improved homework benefits education, specifically Christian education, by enabling a tightly …

Dealing With 'Messy Policy Problems' In The Health Care Sector, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

In his new book, Dealing with Messy Policy Problems, to be published in April 2009, political science professor Steven Ney of the Singapore Management University offers insights on how to make sense of complex, messy and often overlapping policy problems. Ney contends that having conflicts is a necessary part of the process of finding solutions to complex policy issues. He spoke to Knowledge@SMU on policy issues relating to the crisis in global health care. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sovereign Wealth Funds: Mind The Gapp (Generally Accepted Principles And Practices)!, Knowledge@Smu

The ongoing credit crisis has thrown the spotlight onsovereign wealth funds (SWFs). “The size and activities of SWFs in recent years have led to heightened attention on, and suspicion about them,” commented Locknie Hsu, Singapore Management University professor who specialises in international trade and dispute settlement law. Hsu recently authored a commentary on the new set of voluntary principles, known as the ‘Santiago Principles’ or GAPP (Generally Accepted Principles and Practices), adopted and released in October 2008 to govern such funds.

The recent US presidential elections saw unprecedented levels of campaign funds raised and spent. Filipe Campante, public policy professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, presented a paper on “Redistribution in a model of voting and campaign contributions”, as part of a seminar series at the Singapore Management University’s School of Economics.

Decision Support Models For Movies: Making Science Out Of An Art, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Can movie exhibitors, distributors and producers predict box office earnings apart from opening numbers, some good hunches, and a lot of luck? At a recent seminar on ‘Researching the Entertainment Industry’ at the Singapore Management University, Josh Eliashberg, Wharton professor of marketing and operations and information management, presented a set of decision support tools developed with an international team of researchers, which could help “to make a science out of an art”.

Profit Or Growth: Can Singapore's Building And Construction Industry Attain Both?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Singapore’s building and construction industry accounts for about 4% of gross domestic product. Working closely with the country's Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the Singapore Management University (SMU) recently launched a SMU-BCA advanced joint management programme to develop strategic management capabilities of senior executives in the sector. Six panelists comprising industry leaders participated afterwards in a discussion on “Profit or Growth – How to Attain Both”, moderated by SMU’s dean of executive and professional education, Annie Koh.
