Sustained Attention In Children With Two Etiologies Of Early Hydrocephalus, Maegan D. Swartwout, Paul T. Cirino, Amy W. Hampson, Jack M. Fletcher, Michael E. Brandt, Maureen Dennis

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Several studies have shown that children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) and hydrocephalus have attention problems on parent ratings and difficulties in stimulus orienting associated with a posterior brain attention system. Less is known about response control and inhibition associated with an anterior brain attention system. Using the Gordon Vigilance Task (Gordon, 1983), we studied error rate, reaction time, and performance over time for sustained attention, a key anterior attention function, in 101 children with SBM, 17 with aqueductal stenosis (AS; another condition involving congenital hydrocephalus), and 40 typically developing controls (NC). In SBM, we investigated the relation between cognitive …

Missouri V. Holland And Historical Textualism , Michael D. Ramsey Nov 2008

Missouri V. Holland And Historical Textualism , Michael D. Ramsey

Missouri Law Review

This essay does not undertake to say what the Holland rule should be today; instead, it advances a methodology to determine the Constitution's original meaning on the matter. Its approach, for want of a better phrase, I will call "historical textualism." In brief, historical textualism finds constitutional meaning in the specific words of the Constitution's text as they were situated and understood in the context in which they were written. Applying that approach, I find full support for Holland's conclusion in the Constitution's original meaning. That conclusion differs from other studies which have relied on "originalist" analysis to find subject …

Dividing Up Intelligence Education, Robert Clark, Ph.D Nov 2008

Dividing Up Intelligence Education, Robert Clark, Ph.D

Journal of Strategic Security

At this year's annual conference of the International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE) in Monterey, CA, the keynote speaker posed the question, "How much do you need intelligence education outside the beltway?" Which led to a second question discussed during the conference: "What should such education look like?" In short, what should we be teaching in universities? What should we leave to the intelligence community as training? And what could be done in either or both settings? The first question of any educational effort is:What are we preparing students for?

Gleishcshaltung And The Confessing Church During The German Church Struggle, Emily Jane Darnell Nov 2008

Gleishcshaltung And The Confessing Church During The German Church Struggle, Emily Jane Darnell

Masters Theses

This thesis analyzes the contributing factors to the actions taken by the churches in Germany during what Karl Barth and others termed the Kirchenkampf, or German Church Struggle. The Kirchenkampf took place mainly in the 1930s and 1940s. As Hitler rose to power, a new term was coined, Gleichschaltung, which described his program for bringing all of Germany and his conquests into line with the worldview of the Third Reich.

The primary sources for research include works by Martin Luther that shaped the mindset of the churchmen, and history texts detailing the Weimar Republic serving as background for the cultural …

Book Review: The Boat Is Full: Swiss Asylum Denied, Richard Hacken Nov 2008

Book Review: The Boat Is Full: Swiss Asylum Denied, Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Das Boot ist voll (sometimes translated as "The Lifeboat is Full"), directed by Markus Imhoof, is a notable accomplishment in Swiss cinema of the late 20th century. It received the Silver Berlin Bear for Outstanding Single Achievement in 1981 at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the following year it was nominated for an Academy A ward in the category of Best Foreign Film. These honors presumably sprang not merely from recognition of Imhoof' s courage in recalibrating the past, in putting an alternate face on the Holocaust, and in documenting Swiss refugee policies during the Second World War. These …

Book Review: Lenin In Zurich, Axel Fair-Schulz, Katherine French

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The recent death of Alexander Solzhenitsyn on August 3rd of this year might prompt a fresh look at that writer's oeuvre. While Solzhenitsyn is mainly associated with well known works, such as One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago, one should not neglect his less widely known books. Among those is his Lenin in Zurich. This volume should be of particular interest to readers engaged with all things Swiss, given its overt subject matter. One learns much about Switzerland in the early years of the last century as a major locus for Russian emigres. Solzhenitsyn …

Analysis Of Large-Scale Ocean Bottom Pressure Variability In The North Pacific, Don P. Chambers, Josh K. Willis Nov 2008

Analysis Of Large-Scale Ocean Bottom Pressure Variability In The North Pacific, Don P. Chambers, Josh K. Willis

Marine Science Faculty Publications

[1] We use the leading empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) of ocean bottom pressure (OBP) derived from an ocean model and the technique of EOF reconstruction to reduce noise in the large-scale OBP variations derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). The subsequent OBP variations from the model and GRACE are then examined in the North Pacific between January 2003 and May 2007. Although annual and semiannual variations are similar, GRACE observes large interannual fluctuations poleward of 30°, where OBP increases from a low of nearly 3 cm below normal in early 2003 to normal throughout 2004 and 2005, …

Interaction Of Color And Sugar Concentration Preference With Aggression In Monteverde Cloud Forest Hummingbirds (Trochilidae), November 2008, Laurel Anne Mundy Nov 2008

Interaction Of Color And Sugar Concentration Preference With Aggression In Monteverde Cloud Forest Hummingbirds (Trochilidae), November 2008, Laurel Anne Mundy

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In Monteverde, Costa Rica, a number of hummingbird species coexist that are extremely important for pollination. Hummingbirds may prefer flowers of a certain color because they associate it with a higher nectar reward. They also may be territorial and defend especially rich food sources, dominant birds driving away all subordinates. The purpose of this study was to investigate color and sugar concentration preference in hummingbirds using artificial feeders, and to determine whether dominance and aggression has an effect on food choice. Many hummingbird-pollinated flowers are red, so I hypothesized that all species would show a preference, and predicted that all …

Regulation Of Photosynthetic Pigments In Tropical Understory And Gaps, November 2008, Maiken Westphal Nov 2008

Regulation Of Photosynthetic Pigments In Tropical Understory And Gaps, November 2008, Maiken Westphal

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

A plant can manipulate its absolute and relative amounts of photosynthetic pigments in different light environments (Hopkins, 1995, Goncalves and Vieira, 2001). Leaf samples from ten gap and ten understory plants were collected from Calyptrogyne brachystachys (Arecaceae), Heliconia monteverdensis (Heliconiaceae), and Piper ariteum (Piperaceae), and their chlorophylls a, b, and carotenoid concentrations were found. The total concentration of chlorophylls a, b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids were significantly higher (p = <0.05) in the understory leaf samples of C. brachystachys and P. auriteum, but higher in the gap samples of H. monteverdensis. Ratios of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b were significantly greater for gap samples of all three species. A higher concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoids in the understory plants of C. brachystachys and P. auriteum suggests they are adjusting the absolute and relative amounts of pigments to make use of sparse light in the understory. H. monteverdensis utilizes its photosynthetic pigments slightly differently, acting much like a canopy plant.

Water Use, Wastewater Disposal, And Water Conservation Attitudes In The Monteverde Zone, November 2008, Jenna Rasmusson Nov 2008

Water Use, Wastewater Disposal, And Water Conservation Attitudes In The Monteverde Zone, November 2008, Jenna Rasmusson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The residents of the zone of Monteverde, Costa Rica represent a wide array of demographics and other factors such as income, education level, town of residence, and water source, which may impact their water use, wastewater disposal, and water conservation attitudes. In order to study these relationships, a survey was conducted in four different Monteverde towns. The survey consisted of questions on demographic variables, water consumption patterns, methods of disposal, and water shortages, and lastly, addressed attitudes toward water conservation. Data were collected from 64 surveys and analyzed using regression analyses and chi-squared tests. Thirteen significant results and several trends …

Asymmetry Of Floral Structures And The Possibility Of Self-Pollination In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), November 2008, Lindsay Brownell Nov 2008

Asymmetry Of Floral Structures And The Possibility Of Self-Pollination In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), November 2008, Lindsay Brownell

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of the pervasive asymmetry found in the neotropical orchid Oerstedella exasperata. Previous studies have found that high levels of asymmetry decrease reproductive success, and can be caused by a high amount of homozygosity within a population. This study tested the ability of O. exasperata to self-pollinate, a condition that indicates the possibility of a high level of homozygosity. In addition, the relationships between three degrees of asymmetry and floral color, floral mass, plant size and sun exposure were investigated to determine whether higher asymmetry is correlated with lower reproductive success …

The Effect Of Reward And Color Pattern On Butterfly Foraging In Lantana Camara (Verbenaceae), November 2008, Jenna Short, Tara Florida Nov 2008

The Effect Of Reward And Color Pattern On Butterfly Foraging In Lantana Camara (Verbenaceae), November 2008, Jenna Short, Tara Florida

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Lantana camara has inflorescences composed of young, nectar-producing yellow flowers surrounded by older orange flowers that no longer produce nectar (Moldenke 1973). We examined the relationship between L. camara and its butterfly pollinators to see if the preference for yellow flowers (Peters 1998) is innate or learned. Further, we altered the position of flower color on the inflorescence to see if the normal yellow-centered bull’s eye pattern increased visitation over other patterns. We collected data for butterflies foraging on L. camara with six patterns of yellow and orange flowers by painted these colors on the inflorescences. Next, we watched these …

Challenges And Questions Concerning “Culturally-Sensitive Design”, Ross Perkins Nov 2008

Challenges And Questions Concerning “Culturally-Sensitive Design”, Ross Perkins

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the inception of the field of anthropology, scholars have debated the definition for the word "culture." Lonner and Adamapoulos (1997) note that "there are 200 or more definitions of 'culture' in the literature of the social sciences, not one of which has been embraced by a substantial number of social scientists" (p. 76). Strauss and Quinn (1997) provide an overview of four schools of thought regarding the interpretations of "culture":

"Geertzian interpretivists have stressed the publicness of meaning, cognition, and culture. Foucauldian postmodernists have argued for the constructedness of culture and of the self. Some contemporary historical materialists highlight …

Constitutional Afterlife: The Continuing Impact Of Thailand’S Post-Political Constitution, Tom Ginsburg Nov 2008

Constitutional Afterlife: The Continuing Impact Of Thailand’S Post-Political Constitution, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Thailand’s constitution of 1997 introduced profound changes into the country’s governance, creating a “postpolitical” democratic structure in which an intricate array of guardian institutions served to limit the role of elected politicians. Ultimately, the constitutional structure was undermined in a military coup against populist billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, who had taken over many of the institutions designed to constrain political power. Nonetheless, the 1997 constitution appears to be having a significant afterlife, in that its institutional innovations have survived the enactment of a new Constitution and continue to constrain the political process. This article describes the Thai situation and speculates on …

Guarding The Guardians: Judicial Councils And Judicial Independence, Nuno Garoupa, Tom Ginsburg Nov 2008

Guarding The Guardians: Judicial Councils And Judicial Independence, Nuno Garoupa, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This Article uses comparative evidence to inform the ongoing debate about the selection and discipline of judges. In recent decades, many countries around the world have created judicial councils, institutions designed to maintain an appropriate balance between judicial independence and accountability. Our Article has two aims. First, we provide a theory of the formation of judicial councils and identify some of the dimensions along which they differ. Second, we test the extent to which different designs of judicial council affect judicial quality. We find that there is little relationship between councils and quality. We also offer a positive explanation for …

Laser Channeling Of Bethe-Heitler Pairs, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel Nov 2008

Laser Channeling Of Bethe-Heitler Pairs, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron-positron pair creation is analyzed for an arrangement involving three external fields: a high-frequency gamma photon, the Coulomb field of a nucleus, and a strong laser wave. The frequency of the incoming gamma photon is assumed to be larger than the threshold for pair production in the absence of a laser, and the peak electric field of the laser is assumed to be much weaker than Schwinger's critical field. The total number of pairs produced is found to be essentially unchanged by the laser field, while the differential cross section is drastically modified. We show that the laser can channel …
