Impact Of Reward On Floral Mimics Lantana Camara (Verbenaceae) And Epidendrum Radicans (Orchidaceae), November 2008, Kara Zwickey
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The fitness of a non-rewarding plant species can be increased by the addition of another plant species with similar flowers and reward present if pollinators are unable to distinguish between the two species (Bierzychudek 1981). Floral mimicry occurs between species when three ecological conditions are met: the model and mimic species must coexist within flight range of an individual pollinator, plant species must share pollinator species, and pollinator individuals visiting one plant must also visit one or both of the other plant species (Bierzychudek 1981). Non-rewarding Epidendrum radicans (Orchidaceae) has been shown to be a Batesian mimic of rewarding Lantana …

School of Arts & Sciences Newsletter
In 1995, with Gwenn Lavoie as its editor, the first issue of the John Hazen White School of Arts & Sciences Newsletter was published. The newsletter continues to share information about and publicize events sponsored by the School of Arts & Sciences and the accomplishments of that school's faculty. Three issues are published during each academic year by the School of Arts & Sciences Publicity Committee and editor Mary Barszcz.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act changed assessment for English Language Learners (ELLs). Under the law, states must validly assess ELLs' English Language Proficiency (ELP) and content knowledge. The law shed light on the achievement of ELLs while also creating challenges for states in validating state assessment and accountability systems. Test accommodations are used for ELLs to reduce threats to test score validity and measure academic achievement as accurately and fairly as possible. Since ELLs are working towards proficiency in English, they face linguistic and socio-cultural barriers under the confines of large scale assessment. A limited body of research …

Epiphyllic Shading On Host Plant Leaves: Photo-Acclimation To Liverwort And Lichen Cover, November 2008, Claire Addis
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Epiphylls are ubiquitous throughout the Tropics and may significantly shade their host leaves. Anthony et al. (2002) document increased levels of chlorophylls a and b in leaves with significant lichen coverage on two tropical understory plants in Australia, suggesting host leaves may respond to epiphyll shading by increasing photosynthetic pigments. Reaction of plants to the second major group of tropical epiphylls, liverworts, has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to see if a neotropical palm, Calyptrogyne gneisbregntiana, compensates for epiphyll cover by both lichens and liverworts. In addition to chlorophylls a and b, I investigate whether carotenoid …

Book Review: James Joyce: The Last Journey, Robert Means
Book Review: James Joyce: The Last Journey, Robert Means
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Although, James Joyce once had to make a large deposit in a Swiss bank to ensure that he and his family would not become welfare cases of the Swiss government (Edel 33) - this was in 1940 when Joyce and his family fled Paris for Zurich - it's not the city's financial reputation that is the most important connection that Zurich has to the life and work of the author of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Zurich, with its deserved reputation as a cosmopolitan haven for exiles, as a center of medicine, and as the birthplace of psychoanalysis, provided Joyce with …

Educational Motivation In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish, Benoit B. Berho
Educational Motivation In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish, Benoit B. Berho
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This study examined the themes associated with the lack of motivation for school in middle school students, specifically among Heritage Speakers of Spanish. The researcher used two methods to examine student and parent attitudes and beliefs about school and education, as attitudes and beliefs are strongly linked to motivation. The researcher did face-to-face interviews of Mexican parents with direct questions about education and school, and asked middle school students of Mexican descent to read the first part of a short selection about a Mexican immigrant boy in school, then complete the story using their imagination. The researcher compiled the parents' …
The Past, Present, And Future Of The United Nations: A Comment On Paul Kennedy And The Parliament Of Man, Kenneth Anderson
The Past, Present, And Future Of The United Nations: A Comment On Paul Kennedy And The Parliament Of Man, Kenneth Anderson
Book Reviews
This is the English language version of an essay (10,000 words) appearing in the Revista de Libros (Madrid), considering the history and future of the United Nations and global governance through the lens of Paul Kennedy's recent work, The Parliament of Man. The essay is highly skeptical of what it describes as platonism about the future of the UN as the seat of global governance. It offers an alternative view of how to consider the work of the UN, in three areas: security, economic development, and values. The essay argues that, particularly with the rise of new great power tensions …

Testing For Parameter Stability In Quantile Regression Models, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao
Testing For Parameter Stability In Quantile Regression Models, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao
Research Collection School Of Economics
We propose a test for structural change of conditional distribution in dynamic regression models. The test is constructed based on time series regression quantile estimates and complements conventional parameter instability tests in least-square type regression models. Asymptotic distribution for our test under the null hypothesis is derived.
