WINSTON EDWARD JONES: A Collection ofInterwoven Fantasy Short Stories (Under the direction ofRonald Schroeder)

The stories presented in this thesis illustrate a common theme through the use of both fantasy and realism. Specifically, these dichotomous styles are used to comment on the nature of human desire. To represent desire, each story features an appearance and interaction with the titular item, the dragon’s eye. This item often serves as both representation and foil to the characters’ deepest desires. By interjecting this fantastic jewel into realistic situations, these stories attempt to utilize fantasy as a vehicle through which emotional tension is created …

Jean-Paul Marat: The Politics Of Death, Joseph Paul Wallace Jan 2008

Jean-Paul Marat: The Politics Of Death, Joseph Paul Wallace

Honors Theses

The following thesis discusses the death and quasi-deification of Jean-Paul Marat, politician and journalist of the French Revolution. I focus on the tensions between social, artistic, and political movements that sprung up in the wake of the radical’s martyrdom. I also demonstrate the drastic change in general attitudes and policies— political, social and artistic—toward Marat between the years of the Terror and Thermidor. I hope to prove that Marat, in transcending his own policies and words after death by becoming a visual and tactile symbol representing both social justice and political terror, is a pivotal figure for the French Revolution. …

Dressing The Girl/Playing The Boy: Twelfth Night Learns Soccer On The Set Of She's The Man, L Monique Pittman

Faculty Publications

She’s The Man (2006), Andy Fickman’s adaptation of Twelfth Night, pulses with the Title Nine girl power that found cinematic voice and financial reward in Bend It Like Beckham (2002). Creating a pretext for the play’s gender swapping by entering the world of high school soccer, She’s the Man exploits conventions associated with the teen film genre–social group conformity and anxiety, crisis of identity, divorced parents, and ineffectual authority figures. Shakespeare’s cross-dressed heroine Viola becomes Viola Hastings played by Amanda Bynes, for whom this film serves as a star-vehicle showcasing Bynes’s comedic range. In some ways, the film intensifies the …

An Unaccountable Familiarity: A Dual Solution To The Problem Of Theft In Theatrical Productions, Jeannette Gunderson

Seattle University Law Review

The production of a play as a whole is a derivative work of joint authorship; thus, copyright law should protect it. As a work of authorship, the sum of the design elements that form a production are protectable by copyright because the production is an original creation; while based on the text of the play, any given production is developed separately from the underlying work and merits its own protection.8 Because of the collaborative and interdependent nature of a production of a play, musical, or opera, the resulting combination of all aspects of design and direction should be protected as …

Memories Of Flesh And Fire: Crossing Over Color Lines, Alice A. Filmer Jan 2008

Memories Of Flesh And Fire: Crossing Over Color Lines, Alice A. Filmer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Throughout this autoethnography, the author weaves personal memories of her early life in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s and 70s into a larger set of social and historical events of that turbulent era. Using the metaphor of "crossing over," she traces her growing awareness of racial inequality and white privilege during a period in which she must also come to terms with a series of deaths by disease, fire, and assassination. While literally crossing bridges and terrain, she figuratively crosses class and color lines that have long separated generations of her once-wealthy white family from the people …

Microcredit In Developing Countries: Evaluating Programs For Poverty Alleviation, Kelly Sue Nessa Jan 2008

Microcredit In Developing Countries: Evaluating Programs For Poverty Alleviation, Kelly Sue Nessa

Honors Program Theses

There is no question that poverty is a devastating problem in our world today; the UN estimates 34,000 children and 16,000 adults die each day from hunger or preventable diseases with poverty-related causes, totaling more than 18 million a year (Riddell, 2007). One way that poverty is exacerbated is through the inaccessibility of credit to the poor (Todaro, 2006). Microcredit/microfinance has become a popular way of addressing this problem, and this affects a great percentage of the world population that is impoverished. Therefore, a true evaluation of the benefits and downfalls of this economic tool should be addressed. The purpose …

Towards A Framework For Balancing Enterprise Systems Flexibility, John J. Sullivan, Todd A. Boyle, Maike Scherrer-Rathje

School of Information Faculty Publications

Given the uncertainty and changing business conditions faced by North American manufacturers, the need to balance the flexibility of an organization’s information system is more important now than ever before. Too much flexibility may result in workarounds and corrupt data leading to increased inefficiencies and levels of waste, contrary to production goals. Too rigid a system makes it difficult for the organization to adequately respond to uncertainty and change key business process to respond to changing environmental conditions. This research examines the need to balance flexibility in enterprise systems for optimal organizational effectiveness.

When Obscenity Discriminates, Elizabeth M. Glazer Jan 2008

When Obscenity Discriminates, Elizabeth M. Glazer

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

When public indecency statutes outlaw gender nonconformity, obscenity discriminates; when movie ratings censor representations of sexual minorities, obscenity discriminates, and discriminates on the basis of their status as sexual minorities. This Article addresses obscenity doctrine's infliction of first generation, or status discrimination against sexual minorities by conflating "sex" - and the prurient representation of sex that constitutes obscenity - and "sexual orientation." Civil rights lawyers and scholars have turned their attentions away from "first generation" discrimination," where groups experience discrimination on the basis of their status, and toward "second generation" discrimination, where groups experience discrimination for failing to downplay or …

Staying In Orbit, Or Breaking Free: The Relationship Of Mediation To The Courts Over Four Decades, Robert A. Baruch Bush Jan 2008

Staying In Orbit, Or Breaking Free: The Relationship Of Mediation To The Courts Over Four Decades, Robert A. Baruch Bush

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The acceptance and use of mediation by courts--at the state and federal level-- has grown steadily over the last several decades. Today, mediation is a central element in the overall case-management system of many courts, and this phenomenon continues to grow unabated. At the same time, however, another quite different phenomenon has emerged--the expression of serious criticism from mediation scholars and experts about the way mediation is used by the courts. Indeed, it appears that judges and lawyers in the court system, on the one hand, and mediation experts on the other, understand court-related mediation--and mediation itself--in very different terms. Ironically, …
