Peforming Under Pressure: An Examination Of Performance, Workload, And Measures Of Acute Stress, Robyn D. Petree Jan 2008

Peforming Under Pressure: An Examination Of Performance, Workload, And Measures Of Acute Stress, Robyn D. Petree

Psychology Theses - Archive

Although many organizations use in-basket simulations as a means of selection and development, empirical guidance regarding the design of in-baskets is lacking. This study sought to fill that gap by examining the relationships between workload, stress, and performance using an in-basket simulation. Workload was manipulated by creating three variations of a task, differing only in quantity of issues to be addressed, to see how people perform under conditions that represent too much work, a moderate amount of work, and not enough work. Salivary cortisol samples were examined to investigate participants' stress levels throughout the simulation. Results revealed that performance was …

John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff Jan 2008

John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article uses the work of two New Masses editors, John Dos Passos, and Mike Gold, to examine the competing visions for the future of the then-new magazine, including the concepts of audience, contributors, and subject matter, within a framework of widespread anti-immigration sentiment in the United States and a large immigrant working class. This seemingly insular literary debate between early leaders of the magazine echoes in the culture-at-large, as Dos Passos' involvement in the Sacco-Vanzetti case reveals. Dos Passos' rhetoric works to assimilate recent immigrants to the prevailing discourse of American exceptionalism, while Gold's vision seeks to "internationalize" recent …

Transforming Higher Education Through Part-Time Faculty Professional Development That Fosters Flourishing: A Dissertation, Janet Lynn Thompson

Educational Studies Dissertations

This qualitative study investigates the professional development experiences part-time faculty identify as positive. The purpose is to examine how positive professional development experiences inform part-time faculty's subsequent teaching, and what relational qualities if any are present in those positive experiences. Nine part-time faculty - five women and four men - ages 27 to 64, with teaching experience ranging from 3 to 20 years, responded to questions designed from Cooperrider's Appreciative Inquiry model. Conceptual frameworks include the adult development/adult learning interface and relational theory and its application in psychological and educational settings. Participants' positive experiences and how these experiences inform their …

Visualizing The Flow Induced By An Air Curtain Over A Mannequin Using Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry, John Edward Fernandes Jan 2008

Visualizing The Flow Induced By An Air Curtain Over A Mannequin Using Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry, John Edward Fernandes

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air curtains find widespread applications in today's world, such as in malls, supermarkets, airports, cold storage, etc., to allow easy pedestrian movement between two different environments. There is interest in understanding the flow induced by traffic through the air curtain in terms of energy efficiency and the ability to provide isolation from contaminants and airborne pathogens. To develop an understanding of the flow, an initial exploratory study was performed using a static mannequin. A stereo particle image velocimetry (SPIV) system was set up to map the flow of the air curtain, installed on top of the doorway, over a mannequin. …

This paper examines the major documents of the American side concerning the U.S.- China mid-air plane collision incident, which occurred April 1, 2001. Through the hegemonic theoretical lens of Robert Cox’s frame of action and via the research method of hermeneutics of the selected rhetorical artifacts, we aim to shed light on the understanding of the incident and provide insightful implications for handling similar international conflicts in the future. Our findings indicate that the United States has preserved the most resourceful material capabilities and established all the necessary human institutions to implement its shared notion of American hegemony all over …

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx Jan 2008

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx

Partnerships/Community

I want to reflect on the nature of Community-University engagement, its role, challenges and achievements. In this I start with 'engagement' and what that might mean in the context of a university-based research centre. There are, of course, many forms of engagement, but I wish to focus specifically on engagement as coproduction of knowledge. In this, our partner in the co-production of knowledge is the community, or rather civil society. I re-examine the nature of community, and the role of civil society in today's society. The article then outlines one significant research programme that emerged from the work of a …

Perhaps service-learning continues to grow as an effective pedagogy in colleges of education because it offers everyone involved an opportunity to put words into action. With the news full of stories of bullying and school shootings, teachers and teacher candidates look for someone to help them make sense of what feels to be a growing trend of cruelty. Perhaps it is a natural reaction for teachers to want to do something positive in the face of brutality. Perhaps our wanting to be proactive corresponds to whatever drew us to education in the first place. Regardless of the cause, four literacy …

“Boht I Noh Yehri FINM Na Di Il ehn dehm ehn de Kehv dehm”: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart in Krio” came about as a response to the ‘Call for African-language Translations’ by the Translation Caucus of the African Literature Association (TRACALA) in February 2008. Cognizant of the global response to the 50th anniversary of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (TFA), TRACALA intended its specific call for translations of TFA in African languages not only as its own contribution to the global celebrations of the novel’s 50th year but also as the distinctive event marking its own inauguration as a …

Information Technology Adoption By Small Businesses In Minority And Ethnic Communities, Sajda Qureshi, Anne S. York Jan 2008

Information Technology Adoption By Small Businesses In Minority And Ethnic Communities, Sajda Qureshi, Anne S. York

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Information systems adoption by small businesses often is viewed as a basic building block of economic development. Yet, the components that impact business success and thus economic development are mostly unexplored, especially within the context of minority and ethnic communities, both domestically and internationally. Given that IT adoption in small businesses is very often the domain of the business owner, an investigation of how the attributes of individual business owners and the context in which they are embedded is essential. This paper develops an integrative model of the role that IT adoption plays in business success and the economic development …

Reconciliation In The Wake Of Tragedy: Cambodia's Extraordinary Chambers Undermines The Cambodian Constitutiton, Tessa V. Capeloto Jan 2008

Reconciliation In The Wake Of Tragedy: Cambodia's Extraordinary Chambers Undermines The Cambodian Constitutiton, Tessa V. Capeloto

Washington International Law Journal

Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime was responsible for approximately 1.7 million deaths caused by deportation, starvation, murder, and torture. In 2001, Cambodia established the Extraordinary Chambers, an internationalized domestic tribunal, or “hybrid court,” to prosecute the perpetrators most responsible for these atrocities. As the Cambodian government’s primary legal response to the Khmer Rouge, the tribunal conflicts with the requirements of Article 52 of the Cambodian Constitution, an article that requires a policy of national reconciliation to ensure national unity. Cultural conceptions of national reconciliation coupled with the legislative history and purpose of the constitution strongly suggest that …

The Human Rights Costs Of China's Arms Sales To Sudan—A Violation Of International Law On Two Fronts, Stephanie L. Kotecki

Washington International Law Journal

As an emerging world power, China has a crucial need for oil to meet its growing fuel consumption. It has invested heavily in Sudan, a country with extensive and productive oil reserves. However, this partnership has an ugly side. Sudanese militia groups, as well as government troops, have been committing gross human rights violations against residents of the Darfur region. Meanwhile, Chinese arms manufacturers have continued to export weapons and military equipment to Sudan, with the full knowledge of the Chinese government. Many of the weapons used to raid villages in Darfur were manufactured in China. International norms have evolved …

Optrr: Optimizing Randomized Response Schemes For Privacy-Preserving Data Mining, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du Jan 2008

Optrr: Optimizing Randomized Response Schemes For Privacy-Preserving Data Mining, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The randomized response (RR) technique is a promising technique to disguise private categorical data in Privacy-Preserving Data Mining (PPDM). Although a number of RR-based methods have been proposed for various data mining computations, no study has systematically compared them to find optimal RR schemes. The difficulty of comparison lies in the fact that to compare two PPDM schemes, one needs to consider two conflicting metrics: privacy and utility. An optimal scheme based on one metric is usually the worst based on the other metric. In this paper, we first describe a method to quantify privacy and utility. We formulate the …

Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction For Resolving The Gibbs Phenomenon, Nataniel Greene Jan 2008

Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction For Resolving The Gibbs Phenomenon, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

The Gibbs phenomenon refers to the lack of uniform convergence which occurs in many orthogonal basis approximations to piecewise smooth functions. This lack of uniform convergence manifests itself in spurious oscillations near the points of discontinuity and a low order of convergence away from the discontinuities. Here we describe a numerical procedure for overcoming the Gibbs phenomenon called the inverse wavelet reconstruction method. The method takes the Fourier coefficients of an oscillatory partial sum and uses them to construct the wavelet coefficients of a non-oscillatory wavelet series.

Practical Understandings: Teachers' Beliefs And Practices In Pronunciation Teaching, Hsing-Hui Winnie Chiu Jan 2008

Practical Understandings: Teachers' Beliefs And Practices In Pronunciation Teaching, Hsing-Hui Winnie Chiu

Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive

Recent discussion regarding pronunciation teaching and the global expansion of English use have encouraged formal English education in the EFL/expanding circle countries. The present study involved three native English speaking teachers (NEST) and three non-native English speaking teachers (NNEST) in an elementary school of a EFL/Expanding Circle country. The study explores teachers' practices and beliefs of pronunciation teaching in terms of the teaching context (i.e. ESL, EFL or EIL), the teaching component: segmentals or suprasegmentals, their teaching approaches, and the differences between NESTs and NNESTs. The results revealed the teachers' EFL norm-bound beliefs and practices with little EIL inclination. Moreover, the …

A high-throughput high-sensitivity optical technique for measuringmagnetostriction of thin-film composition-spread samples has been developed. It determines the magnetostriction by measuring the induced deflection of micromachined cantilever unimorph samples. Magnetostrictionmeasurements have been performed on as-deposited Fe–Ga and Fe–Ga–Al thin-film composition spreads. The thin-film Fe–Ga spreads display a similar compositional variation of magnetostriction as bulk. A previously undiscovered peak in magnetostriction at low Ga content was also observed and attributed to a maximum in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Magnetostrictive mapping of the Fe–Ga–Al ternary system reveals the possibility of substituting up to 8at.%Al in Fe70Ga30 without significant degradation of magnetostriction.

High-Throughput Screening Of Shape Memory Alloy Thin-Film Spreads Using Nanoindentation, Arpit Dwivedi, Thomas J. Wyrobek, Oden L. Warren, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Olubenga O. Famodu, Ichiro Takeuchi

Faculty Publications

We have demonstrated the utility of nanoindentation as a rapid characterization tool for mapping shape memoryalloy compositions in combinatorial thin-film libraries. Nanoindentation was performed on Ni–Mn–Al ternary composition spreads. The indentation hardness and the reduced elastic modulus were mapped across a large fraction of the ternary phase diagram. The large shape memoryalloy composition region, located around the Heusler composition (Ni2MnAl), was found to display significant departure in these mechanical properties from the rest of the composition spread. In particular, the modulus and the hardness values are lower for the martensite region than those of the rest of the …
