Reading Forward' From The Left: An Interview With Barbara Foley, Joseph G. Ramsey Jan 2008

Reading Forward' From The Left: An Interview With Barbara Foley, Joseph G. Ramsey

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Barbara Clare Foley teaches in the English Department at Rutgers University-Newark Campus and has written extensively about literary radicalism, African American literature, Marxist theory, and the politics of the academy. Her 1993 study Radical Representation: Politics and Form in U.S. Proletarian Fiction 1929-1940, has exerted considerable influence on emerging scholars of left-wing literature. Her most recent books are Spectres of 1919: Class and Nation in the Making of the New Negro (2003) and Wrestling with Prometheus: Ralph Ellison, the Left, and the Making of "Invisible Man", her forthcoming work, which she discusses below. Foley is also a member …

[First paragraph]

The mobile phone networks promise global communication, wholeness, plethora, safety, and romance. Instead, cellphones silence us. In a repressive pseudo-democracy, we are silenced.

Creating An American Music: A Critical View Of The Origins Of Country [Part 1], Kevin Yuill Jan 2008

Creating An American Music: A Critical View Of The Origins Of Country [Part 1], Kevin Yuill

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Country music, in its lyrics, its image and its themes, attempts to reflect the interests and experiences of the US white working class. Centred on the figure of the cowboy, this musical genre frequently draws upon influences from music originating in other communities, yet this process is "whitewashed" from the finished product. This encapsulates two broader trends: an attempt to construct a genuinely "American" form of popular music, shaped through often dubious ethnographic techniques, and forms of marketing which reflect official preoccupations expressed in the 1924 National Origins Act and its attempt to freeze immigration in proportion to the 1890 …

Constructing Country: Fakery And 'Strictly American' Music [Part 2], Kevin Yuill Jan 2008

Constructing Country: Fakery And 'Strictly American' Music [Part 2], Kevin Yuill

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Having identified the strands that would later make up country music, we now consider the further development of the search for a national music. It coincided with the growing romantic attachment of certain members of the elite to a racialized Anglo-Saxon American "folk" whose culture they re-imagined, shorn of any uncouth or labor-related themes, in contrast to more urban, black or immigrant cultures. The English proselytiser for Morris dancing, Cecil Sharp, exceeded the efforts of others in highlighting the music of the Appalachians as particularly Anglo-Saxon and thus worthy of attention. After World War I in particular, an …

On Ian Tyrrell's Transnational Nation: United States History In Global Perspective, Alexandra Ganser Jan 2008

On Ian Tyrrell's Transnational Nation: United States History In Global Perspective, Alexandra Ganser

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

About nine decades after Randolph Bourne's much-cited pamphlet "Trans-National America" was published on the eve of the U.S.'s entry to World War [1], the field of American Studies has recently undergone what has been called a transnational turn. Within this paradigm, the focus of study is increasingly on the transnational exchange of ideas and goods, on border-crossing migrations of people, and on how all of these movements shape (and are shaped by) cultural discourses within and outside the U.S., always in a historically diachronic perspective [2]. Bourne, coining the term "trans-national", started his essay by an analysis of …

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe Jan 2008

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe

Global Tides

The severity and scope of human trafficking for sexual and labor exploitation has been grossly understudied until this past decade. Reliable information on how and why trafficking in persons occurs is scarce, especially for the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s notorious policies of discrimination against women serve as the starting point. In Saudi Arabia, the monarchy has co-opted the traditional roles of women as an emblem of its own Islamic character, thereby making it a symbol of its national heritage. An entrenched institution of patriarchy uses gender construction as an instrument of state policy and state security. This intimate relationship between …

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert Jan 2008

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert

Global Tides

Poor nations often leave countless young males without an education, a stable family, or a strong government to follow. These conditions make the choice to join a group of religious radicals appealing. Tajikistan, a country of over seven million located just north of Afghanistan in Central Asia, is surrounded by war torn, politically unstable neighbors and fits the profile of a hotbed for religious radicalism. While the country has avoided a large-scale international war, political instability and economic deficiencies have left Tajikistan primed for future conflict. The situation presents an intriguing study for those concerned with humanitarian issues and those …

Combined Scalability Coding Based On The Scalable Extension Of H.264/Avc, Sangseok Park Jan 2008

Combined Scalability Coding Based On The Scalable Extension Of H.264/Avc, Sangseok Park

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fine-grain scalability (FGS) based on significant and refinement coding is one of the ways to achieve quality scalability by providing a graceful quality degradation through truncations of the FGS enhancement layer. This approach is useful for video conferencing and telephony on wireless networks, which need to ensure real-time and low-delay conditions since they are subject to serious bit rate fluctuations. The simplification of FGS is proposed to reduce the overall complexity for the Progressive Refinement (PR) slice. The one pass scanning structure is introduced to simplify the coding pass of the FGS layers and the code type method is also …

Peforming Under Pressure: An Examination Of Performance, Workload, And Measures Of Acute Stress, Robyn D. Petree Jan 2008

Peforming Under Pressure: An Examination Of Performance, Workload, And Measures Of Acute Stress, Robyn D. Petree

Psychology Theses - Archive

Although many organizations use in-basket simulations as a means of selection and development, empirical guidance regarding the design of in-baskets is lacking. This study sought to fill that gap by examining the relationships between workload, stress, and performance using an in-basket simulation. Workload was manipulated by creating three variations of a task, differing only in quantity of issues to be addressed, to see how people perform under conditions that represent too much work, a moderate amount of work, and not enough work. Salivary cortisol samples were examined to investigate participants' stress levels throughout the simulation. Results revealed that performance was …

John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff Jan 2008

John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article uses the work of two New Masses editors, John Dos Passos, and Mike Gold, to examine the competing visions for the future of the then-new magazine, including the concepts of audience, contributors, and subject matter, within a framework of widespread anti-immigration sentiment in the United States and a large immigrant working class. This seemingly insular literary debate between early leaders of the magazine echoes in the culture-at-large, as Dos Passos' involvement in the Sacco-Vanzetti case reveals. Dos Passos' rhetoric works to assimilate recent immigrants to the prevailing discourse of American exceptionalism, while Gold's vision seeks to "internationalize" recent …

The Cultural Commons: An Interview With Michael Denning, Victor Cohen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Michael Denning is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of American Studies at Yale University. His first two books, Cover Stories: Narrative and Ideology in the British Spy Thriller (Routledge, 1987) and Mechanic Accents: Dime Novels and Working Class Culture (Verso, 1987), examined the politics of popular fiction. He followed them up with The Cultural Front: Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century (Verso, 1998), which has become the encyclopedic study of the culture of the American Popular Front. Denning's most recent work, Culture in an Age of Three Worlds (Verso, 2004), analyses the rise and fall of American …
