Direct Extraction Of Normal Mapped Meshes From Volume Data, Mark Barry, Zoë J. Wood Dec 2008

Direct Extraction Of Normal Mapped Meshes From Volume Data, Mark Barry, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We describe a method of directly extracting a simplified contour surface along with detailed normal maps from volume data in one fast and integrated process. A robust dual contouring algorithm is used for efficiently extracting a high-quality "crack-free" simplified surface from volume data. As each polygon is generated, the normal map is simultaneously generated. An underlying octree data structure reduces the search space required for high to low resolution surface normal mapping. The process quickly yields simplified meshes fitted with normal maps that accurately resemble their complex equivalents.

Sinorhizobium Meliloti, A Bacterium Lacking The Autoinducer-2 (Ai-2) Synthase, Responds To Ai-2 Supplied By Other Bacteria, C. S. Pereira, J. R. Mcauley, M. E. Taga, K. B. Xavier, Stephen T. Miller Dec 2008

Sinorhizobium Meliloti, A Bacterium Lacking The Autoinducer-2 (Ai-2) Synthase, Responds To Ai-2 Supplied By Other Bacteria, C. S. Pereira, J. R. Mcauley, M. E. Taga, K. B. Xavier, Stephen T. Miller

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Many bacterial species respond to the quorum-sensing signal autoinducer-2 (AI-2) by regulating different niche-specific genes. Here, we show that Sinorhizobium meliloti, a plant symbiont lacking the gene for the AI-2 synthase, while not capable of producing AI-2 can nonetheless respond to AI-2 produced by other species. We demonstrate that S. meliloti has a periplasmic binding protein that binds AI-2. The crystal structure of this protein (here named SmlsrB) with its ligand reveals that it binds (2R,4S)-2-methyl-2,3,3,4-tetrahydroxytetrahydrofuran (R-THMF), the identical AI-2 isomer recognized by LsrB of Salmonella typhimurium. The gene encoding SmlsrB is in an operon with orthologues of the lsr …

The Nursing Shortage: A Fresh Perspective, Mary K. Wallenburg Dec 2008

The Nursing Shortage: A Fresh Perspective, Mary K. Wallenburg

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The current nursing shortage in the United States has the potential to become a major public health crisis (US Department, 2004). In recent years, a trend has developed that demonstrates a lack of interest on the part of young adults aged fifteen to eighteen years old towards nursing careers (Hoke, 2006). This research examines the attitudes and perceptions of young people, aged fifteen to eighteen years old; towards the field of nursing. The Methodology used to answer the research question was a survey tool developed by the author. The survey was created using the survey development site, Zoomerang©. Following IRB …

The Effects Of Racial And Extracurricular Friendship Diversity On Achievement, Anil Nathan Dec 2008

The Effects Of Racial And Extracurricular Friendship Diversity On Achievement, Anil Nathan

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper finds the effect of having friends of a similar race and who are involved in similar activities. It explores data which allows a peer group to be defined openly through self nominations. Using a strategy that corrects for the endogeneity of peer effects by instrumenting using variables at the "grade within school" level, it is shown that friendship diversity can help whites increase achievement. Although not much significance was found with other races, most of the strategies pushed towards the direction of racial diversity aiding achievement. Regarding extracurricular activities, it is found that there is a benefit in …

An Analysis Of Current Healthcare Proposals: Obama And Mccain, Dan Terrell Dec 2008

An Analysis Of Current Healthcare Proposals: Obama And Mccain, Dan Terrell

Honors Projects in Economics

The healthcare system of the U.S. is broken. The next opportunity for overwhelming healthcare system reform will be when the next president takes office. This paper analyzes the 2008 presidential election candidates McCain and Obama healthcare proposals through a look at key players in the current healthcare system (government, pharmaceuticals, doctors, hospitals, and health insurance companies) and the affects of implementing such a plan. The presidential plans are presented side by side. Projected outcomes of the changes offered by Obama will be an increased role of the government and decreased power of the health insurance companies while increasing coverage. The …

Measuring Effectiveness Of Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management Methods, Andrew J. Mesale Dec 2008

Measuring Effectiveness Of Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management Methods, Andrew J. Mesale

Honors Projects in Finance

In this paper, I use quantitative computer models to measure the effectiveness of Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management in predicting future stock returns using commonly accepted industry valuation factors. Industry knowledge and practices are first examined in order to determine strengths and weaknesses, as well as to build a foundation for the modeling. In order to assess the accuracy of the model and its inherent concepts, I employ up to ten years of historical data for a sample of stocks. The analysis examines the historical data to determine if there is any correlation between returns and the valuation factors. Results suggest …

Advancing Pre-Service Teachers’ Mathematical Sophistication Via Mathematical Tasks, Kien Lim

Departmental Papers (Math)

This article is based on the seminar that the author presented for the Hong Kong Association for Mathematics Education at the Hong Kong Baptist University on May 22, 2008. In this article, the author differentiates (a) between institutionalized mathematics and school mathematics, (b) between ways of understanding and ways of thinking as two complementary subsets of mathematics that students should develop, (c) between sophisticated learners and passive learners, and (d) between knowledge dissemination and knowledge engagement as two modes of instructions. Harel’s (2007) pedagogical principles are discussed in relation to the design of mathematical tasks and their use in classrooms. …

Hospital Costs For Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients Receiving Perfect Compliance Of Evidence-Based Care Bundle, Jill S. Mccormick Dec 2008

Hospital Costs For Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients Receiving Perfect Compliance Of Evidence-Based Care Bundle, Jill S. Mccormick

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

An estimated 565,000 new myocardial infarctions and 300,000 recurrent myocardial infarctions will occur each year (AHA, 2006). This study sought to find if there was a difference in hospital costs between those acute myocardial infarction patients that received 100% of eligible core measures (evidence-based care bundle) and those that did not. There is limited research on actual hospital costs (vs. charge data) for acute myocardial infarction evidence-based treatment in the United States. The results of the study did not show any statistically significant difference in hospital costs between those patients that received 100% of core measures and those that did …

Simulation Modeling Of Karst Aquifer Conduit Evolution And Relations To Climate, John D. Broome Dec 2008

Simulation Modeling Of Karst Aquifer Conduit Evolution And Relations To Climate, John D. Broome

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

ABSTRACT Karst regions of the world that receive relatively similar amounts of precipitation display a wide variety of landscapes. It has been suggested (Groves and Meiman, 2005) that climates exhibiting larger discrete storm events have more dissolving power and consequently higher rates of conduit growth than climates with more uniform precipitation distributions. To study this concept, a computer program “Cave Growth” was developed that modeled the growth of a cross-section of a cave passage under dynamic flow and chemical conditions. A series of 46 simulation datasets were created to represent different climatic conditions. These simulations had the same total annual …

Site Directed Mutagensis Of Bacteriophage Hk639 And Identification Of Its Integration Site, Madhuri Jonnalagadda Dec 2008

Site Directed Mutagensis Of Bacteriophage Hk639 And Identification Of Its Integration Site, Madhuri Jonnalagadda

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Bacteriophages affect bacterial evolution, pathogenesis and global nutrient cycling. They are also the most numerous and diverse group of biological entities on the planet [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Members of the Lambda phage family share a similar genetic organization and control early gene expression by suppressing transcription, a process known as antitermination. Transcription antitermination in Lambda is mediated by a phage-encoded protein whereas in lambdoid phage HK022, antitermination is mediated by a phage-encoded RNA molecules. Recent results suggest that another bacteriophage called HK639 also appears to use RNA-mediated antitermination. To characterize this newly identified phage we generated site …

A Mock Rhetoric: The Use Of Satire In First-Year Composition, Michael James Sobiech Dec 2008

A Mock Rhetoric: The Use Of Satire In First-Year Composition, Michael James Sobiech

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

On the eve of the Second World War, high school English teacher Leon Ormond writes about a minor skirmish he has with a history teacher over the pedagogical usefulness of wit. After telling her about his book, Laugh and Learn: The Art of Teaching with Humor, she tells him, “Only morons laugh.” Ormond goes on to describe her as one who exhibits “a countenance curiously reminiscent of an ancient Greek tragic mask”—she was “an exemplary member of the Cult of Pedagogic Pallbearers.” Although educators, historically, have often frowned upon humor, humorous writing—especially satirical writing—helps students understand the fundamentals of …

The Physical Discrimination And Possible Concept Of Object Weight That Exists In Infants And Toddlers, Anita Patnaik Dec 2008

The Physical Discrimination And Possible Concept Of Object Weight That Exists In Infants And Toddlers, Anita Patnaik

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Young children’s attention to a variety of object features has been studied. However, very few studies have examined young children’s understanding of object weight. In order to investigate developmental changes in perception and categorization of weight, three tasks were given to 59 18-month-old to 3-year-old children. Three age groups (20; 27 and 34 months old) were analyzed for the final results. The first two tasks used a familiarization and novelty preference paradigm in which attention was assessed by measuring each child’s looking time.

The first task’s goal was to evaluate young children’s ability to discriminate objects on the basis of …

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel Dec 2008

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

The American legal profession has long been organized along hierarchical lines, and in many instances, status inequalities between attorneys are based on perceived differences in attorneys' educational credentials. Relying upon the theories of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this essay will discuss how American legal educational institutions operate to reproduce the stratification within the legal profession and within society as a whole.

American law schools are not equalizing institutions that erase all class differences among students to create a profession that awards all of its members a monolithic class status. By allocating professional status based on a system of educational tiers, …

Patient To Nurse Ratios And Safety Outcomes For Patients, Julie Rinaldifuller Dec 2008

Patient To Nurse Ratios And Safety Outcomes For Patients, Julie Rinaldifuller

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Hospital administrators are given the challenge of how to staff their hospitals cost effectively while maintaining a safe culture for the public. This study was conducted to determine the association between the patient to nurse ratio and safety outcomes for patients at one local institution. Three nursing units, providing different levels of patient care, were studied, looking at adverse events involving patients and what the patient to nurse ratio was during that time. The literature review supported lower patient to nurse ratios to deliver safe patient care. With nursing care critically impacting patient safety, it would be in the interest …

Evidence Of A Novel Rna Secondary Structure In The Coding Region Of Hiv-1 Pol Gene., Qi Wang, Ian Barr, Feng Guo, Christopher Lee

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

RNA secondary structures play several important roles in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) life cycle. To assess whether RNA secondary structure might affect the function of the HIV protease and reverse transcriptase genes, which are the main targets of anti-HIV drugs, we applied a series of different computational approaches to detect RNA secondary structures, including thermodynamic RNA folding predictions, synonymous variability analysis, and covariance analysis. Each method independently revealed strong evidence of a novel RNA secondary structure at the junction of the protease and reverse transcriptase genes, consisting of a 107-nucleotide region containing three stems, A, B, and C. First, …

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors Dec 2008

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

State law provides that master jury lists are comprised by combining the lists of registered voters and registered drivers in the state of Nebraska. There have been anecdotal concerns that because minorities may be less likely to be registered to vote and less likely to be registered to drive, the current source lists may not effectively achieve a representative master list. The findings of this examination support this assertion. Based on an examination of juror qualification forms from 8 of Nebraska’s most diverse counties, data indicate that there are significant racial disparities in the initial and eligible pools of jurors. …

Private Equity's Three Lessons For Agency Theory, William Wilson Bratton Dec 2008

Private Equity's Three Lessons For Agency Theory, William Wilson Bratton

Articles

It is time to consider the lessons to be learned from the recent boom in private equity buyouts, not least in view of its abrupt termination in the wake of tightened credit. In the past, such inquiries have been undertaken in the context of agency theory and have focused on the buyout's implications for solving the problem of separation of ownership and control. This article reverses the pattern of inquiry to consider the buyout's implications for agency theory, pointing to three lessons. The first lesson addresses agency theory's three-way association among control transfers, governance discipline and hostile takeovers, suggesting that …
