The Formal Structure Of Metaphysics And The Importance Of Being Earnest, Jeremy Barris Dec 2008

The Formal Structure Of Metaphysics And The Importance Of Being Earnest, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

This article considers how the formal structure of metaphysical thought is displayed in Oscar Wilde's Importance of Being Earnest. One frequent aim of metaphysics is to understand the world as a whole. We cannot gain such a global vantage point without separating ourselves from all the particular meanings things have for us within the world. But we start within the world, and so can only proceed on the basis of those particular meanings. Consequently we can only separate ourselves from them if they work to cancel themselves in favor of the global understanding. When the separate range of meanings is …

Daily Variation And Predicting Stock Market Returns For The Frankfurter Börse (Stock Market), Jeffrey E. Jarrett, Janne Schilling

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this article we test the random walk hypothesis in the German daily stock prices by means of a unit root test and the development of an ARIMA model for prediction. The results show that the time series of daily stock returns for a stratified random sample of German firms listed on the stock exchange of Frankfurt exhibit unit roots. Also, we find that one may predict changes in the returns to these listed stocks. These time series exhibit properties which are forecast able and provide the intelligent data analysts' methods to better predict the directive of individual stock returns …

Developing 1990, 2000, And 2005 Impervious Surface Estimates For Southern York County, Maine, David G. Justice, Fay A. Rubin

PREP Reports & Publications

Estimates of impervious surface acreage in 1990, 2000, and 2005 were generated for an 11-town region in York County, Maine, covered by the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP). The project extended previous work done in New Hampshire, relying on comparable satellite-based data sources and image processing methodologies. As a result, standardized impervious surface estimates are now available for the entirety of the PREP region. The impervious surface estimates were derived by applying both traditional and subpixel classification techniques to 30-meter Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) satellite image data. The classifications indicated that …

Yellow Head Virus: Transmission And Genome Analyses, Hongwei Ma Dec 2008

Yellow Head Virus: Transmission And Genome Analyses, Hongwei Ma

Dissertations

Yellow head virus (YHV) is an important pathogen to shrimp aquaculture. Among 13 species of naturally YHV-negative crustaceans in the Mississippi coastal area, the daggerblade grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, and the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, were tested for potential reservoir and carrier hosts of YHV using PCR and real time PCR. The YHV replicated in the daggerblade grass shrimp, and was still detectable on 36 d post-inoculation, causing 8% mortality after injection. However, YHV did not replicate in the blue crab. These data suggest that the daggerblade grass shrimp could act as a reservoir host for YHV. Storage conditions of …

Estimating Risk Under Interval Uncertainty: Sequential And Parallel Algorithms, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Songsak Sriboonchitta

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional econometrics, the quality of an individual investment -- and of the investment portfolio -- is characterized by its expected return and its risk (variance). For an individual investment or portfolio, we can estimate the future expected return and a future risk by tracing the returns x1, ..., xn of this investment (and/or similar investments) over the past years, and computing the statistical characteristics based on these returns. The return (per unit investment) is defined as the selling of the corresponding financial instrument at the ends of, e.g., a one-year period, divided by the buying price …

Immigration As Threat: A Content Analysis Of Citizen Perception, Michael T. Costelloe Dec 2008

Immigration As Threat: A Content Analysis Of Citizen Perception, Michael T. Costelloe

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Public discourse concerning immigration and immigration policy often relies on the characterization and universalization of the threats that are posed by increasing immigration. It is the specification and reference to these threats that allows one to consider immigration as "moral panic." It is through this lens, that I undertake a content analysis of letters to the editor that appeared in a large southwestern city newspaper from January 1st 2005 to December 31st, 2005. This study describes the extent to which these threats seem to resonate with individuals who wrote and had published letters to the editor regarding immigration issues.

Excerpt from the introduction:

"The purpose of this chapter is to examine the major streams of research about catastrophic failures, describing what we have learned about why these failures occur as well as how they can be prevented. The chapter begins by describing the most prominent sociological school of thought with regard to catastrophic failures, namely normal accident theory. That body of thought examines the structure of organizational systems that are most susceptible to catastrophic failures. Then, we turn to several behavioral perspectives on catastrophic failures, assessing a stream of research that has attempted to understand the cognitive, group and …
