Marital Instability In East Asian Societies: A Comparative Study Of China, Taiwan, And South Korea, Susan Lynne Rich Dec 2008

Marital Instability In East Asian Societies: A Comparative Study Of China, Taiwan, And South Korea, Susan Lynne Rich

Theses and Dissertations

The rising trend in marital instability and divorce is a topic of discussion nearly world-wide. While divorce affects considerably fewer people in non-Western societies, its rising trend and impact are quite alarming. Given the well established findings in the West, it is useful to study divorce and marital instability in non-Western societies so that prior findings from the West can be scrutinized and validated cross-culturally. This study is necessary because the theories developed in the West may not be entirely applicable to non-Western societies and cultural factors may in some cases be more important than socio-economic factors. By using the …

Model Development Of A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell To Predict Steady And Unsteady Behavior, Bikash Mishra Dec 2008

Model Development Of A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell To Predict Steady And Unsteady Behavior, Bikash Mishra

Theses and Dissertations

Fuel cells are promising technology to meet the energy need of the future. This alternative energy source is clean and efficient, and with the continuous decrease in fossil fuel resources, one of the best bets towards sustaining our power needs. Fuel cells are being used in automobiles as well as to fulfill portable power needs. In this work a computational model has been developed for fuel cells which can be used to simulate traditional as well as passive proton exchange membrane fuel cell behavior. The model is unsteady, two phase, nonisothermal in nature, and also capable of handling natural convection …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Metals, Bohumir Jelinek Dec 2008

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Metals, Bohumir Jelinek

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development and testing of modified embedded atom method (MEAM) interatomic potentials for Al, Si, Mg, Cu, Fe, and their alloys, with primary concentration on Mg-Al system. We performed the density functional theory (DFT) based ab initio calculations to determine the structural and elastic properties of element pairs that are impractical to obtain from experimental measurements. Specifically, we estimated the cohesive energy, equilibrium atomic volume, bulk modulus, and elastic moduli of every element pair in the NaCl reference structure. Based on the results of DFT calculations, MEAM parameters for each element pair were constructed. We extensively tested …

Morphological And Physiological Changes In Laying Hens In Various Stages Of Non-Feed Withdrawal Molt, Ann Laster Mcdonald Dec 2008

Morphological And Physiological Changes In Laying Hens In Various Stages Of Non-Feed Withdrawal Molt, Ann Laster Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Molting is a natural occurrence in the Avian species that can include a period of fasting. Animal rights groups view the longepted standard industry practice as inhumane. Based on influences from these groups and the recommendation of its scientific committee, United Egg Producers (UEP) requires members of its Animal Care Certified Program use a noneed withdrawal molting program, even though the morphological and physiological effects of this method have not been studied in depth and the existing literature provides contradictory results. Research regarding how to induce a noneed withdrawal molt has been performed using feed that is nutrient deficient or …

This thesis evaluates the effects of Combined Heating and Power (CHP) systems with a Propane fueled spark ignited engine as prime mover used in a small commercial building. The system was evaluated in five different U.S. cities. The most common operating modes, thermal load following (FTL) and electric load following (FEL) were evaluated, and an optimized operating mode was developed and investigated. The optimized operating mode is a hybrid (FHL) of FEL and FTL operation. Methodology for the derivation and application of these models is presented. Also, the economic effects of Diesel and Natural Gas were investigated. The results for …

Experiments And Modeling Of Fatigue And Fracture Of Aluminum Alloys, J Brian Jordon Dec 2008

Experiments And Modeling Of Fatigue And Fracture Of Aluminum Alloys, J Brian Jordon

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, understanding the microstructural effects of monotonic and cyclic failure of wrought 7075-T651 and cast A356 aluminum alloys were examined. In particular, the structure-property relations were quantified for the plasticity/damage model and two fatigue crack models. Several types of experiments were employed to adapt an internal state variable plasticity and damage model to the wrought alloy. The damage model was originally developed for cast alloys and thus, the model was modified to account for void nucleation, growth, and coalescence for a wrought alloy. In addition, fatigue experiments were employed to determine structure-property relations for the cast alloy. Based …

Factors Determining Per Acre Market Value Of Hunting Leases On Sixteenth Section Lands In Mississippi, Jacob Daniel Rhyne Dec 2008

Factors Determining Per Acre Market Value Of Hunting Leases On Sixteenth Section Lands In Mississippi, Jacob Daniel Rhyne

Theses and Dissertations

Valuation of leases based on the contingent valuation may be biased because hypothetical data has limitations. This study used the hedonic method to evaluate factors affecting the value of hunting leases on Sixteenth Section Lands in Mississippi that are auctioned to the public. Due to the competitive nature of the issuance of these leases, this study provides a comprehensive and unbiased estimate of the impact that cover type, game quality, distance to urban areas, and location have on hunting lease prices. The implicit prices of these characteristics indicate that land managers should adopt shorter lease lengths, smaller lease sizes and …

Motion On Upper-Plate Faults During Subduction Zone Earthquakes: Case Of The Atacama Fault System, Northern Chile, John P. Loveless, Matthew E. Pritchard Dec 2008

Motion On Upper-Plate Faults During Subduction Zone Earthquakes: Case Of The Atacama Fault System, Northern Chile, John P. Loveless, Matthew E. Pritchard

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Motion on the Atacama Fault System (AFS) in northern Chile is driven by Andean subduction zone processes. We use two approaches, observational and theoretical, to evaluate how the AFS and other forearc faults responded to coseismic stress induced by one well-studied megathrust earthquake, the 1995 Mw = 8.1 Antofagasta event. We use synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to search for small-scale coseismic and postseismic deformation on individual faults. The InSAR data are ambiguous: some images show offset consistent with coseismic faulting on the Paposo segment of the AFS and others lack such signal. The fact that we do not …

Combinatorial Genericity And Minimal Rigidity, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran Dec 2008

Combinatorial Genericity And Minimal Rigidity, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A well studied geometric problem, with applications ranging from molecular structure determination to sensor networks, asks for the reconstruction of a set P of n unknown points from a finite set of pairwise distances (up to Euclidean isometries). We are concerned here with a related problem: which sets of distances are minimal with the property that they allow for the reconstruction of P, up to a finite set of possibilities? In the planar case, the answer is known generically via the landmark Maxwell-Laman Theorem from Rigidity Theory, and it leads to a combinatorial answer: the underlying structure of such a …

Menstrual Cycle And Visual Information Processing, Michelle Nash Dec 2008

Menstrual Cycle And Visual Information Processing, Michelle Nash

Theses and Dissertations

This project examined the effects menstruation may have on visual attention in women. A recent study examined electroencephalographic (EEG) gender differences using a visual object recognition task. Results indicated certain EEG amplitudes (specifically, P300 and N400) are greater in women than men. This study extended the previous findings to determine if these increased EEG amplitudes vary across menstrual phases. Eighteen female participants participated in a series of 3 EEG recording sessions using the same visual object recognition task from the previous study; 18 male participants completed this task once. Analyses from 15 of the 18 female and 16 of the …
