One of the things that unifies many of the scholars in IP generally, and in this room in particular, is an interest in what you might call noncommercial models cooperative sharing, peer-to-peer creativity-a yearning for a different kind of life, perhaps, one that's less commercial, more focused on dialogues, both democratic and personal, and a mode of life that emphasizes the process and product of work rather than its monetary payoff. We all know from the work of Teresa Amabile and Alfie Cohen and our own experience that if you are keeping your eye on a monetary goal or getting …

I also thank this morning's panelists. What I'm going to do is, first, say a little bit of an overview about what brings us all together and then talk about a particular project that many of you already have heard about, but it is something that has bothered me ever since I entered the field. It is the problem of harmless use, or what you might call a beneficial spillover that causes no loss to the person who is causally responsible for it, either in whole or in part.

Roofing Foreman Dies From Telescopic Boom Lift Fall, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Falls

On a winter day in 2008, a male roofer/ foreman died after falling from a telescopic boom lift. He and four other roofing crew members were installing a new roof at a residence undergoing restoration. They had arrived at the job site at approximately 7:45 AM.

At approximately 8:00 AM, the foreman and two roofers were installing flashing on the roof of an alcove on the south side of the house while two other roofers were in a pickup truck putting on coveralls. The crew on the roof needed red rosin underlayment (paper) which was in the pickup truck. Using …

We present the results of searches for large extra dimensions in samples of events with large missing transverse energy E T and either a photon or a jet produced in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II. For γ+E T and jet+E T candidate samples corresponding to 2.0 and 1.1fb-1 of integrated luminosity, respectively, we observe good agreement with standard model expectations and obtain a combined lower limit on the fundamental parameter of the large extra dimensions model MD as a function of the number of extra dimensions in the model. © 2008 The American …

A wealth of genetic associations for cardiovascular and metabolic phenotypes in humans has been accumulating over the last decade, in particular a large number of loci derived from recent genome wide association studies (GWAS). True complex disease-associated loci often exert modest effects, so their delineation currently requires integration of diverse phenotypic data from large studies to ensure robust meta-analyses. We have designed a gene-centric 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array to assess potentially relevant loci across a range of cardiovascular, metabolic and inflammatory syndromes. The array utilizes a "cosmopolitan" tagging approach to capture the genetic diversity across approximately 2,000 …

High-Level Synthesis Framework For Crosstalk Minimization In Vlsi Asics, Hariharan Sankaran Oct 2008

High-Level Synthesis Framework For Crosstalk Minimization In Vlsi Asics, Hariharan Sankaran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Capacitive crosstalk noise can affect the delay of a switching signal or induce a glitch on a static signal causing timing violations or chip failure. Crosstalk noise depends on coupling parasitics, driver strength, signal timing characteristics, and signal transition patterns. Layout level crosstalk analysis techniques are generally pessimistic and computationally expensive for large designs due to lack of design flexibility at lower-levels of design hierarchy. The architectural decisions such as type of interconnect architecture, number of storage and execution units, network of communicating units, data bus width, etc., have a major impact on the quality of design attributes such as …

Proteomic Profiling Of Plasmodium Sporozoite Maturation Identifies New Proteins Essential For Parasite Development And Infectivity, E Lasonder, Cj Janse, G-J Van Gemert, Gr Mair, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites that develop and mature inside an Anopheles mosquito initiate a malaria infection in humans. Here we report the first proteomic comparison of different parasite stages from the mosquito -- early and late oocysts containing midgut sporozoites, and the mature, infectious salivary gland sporozoites. Despite the morphological similarity between midgut and salivary gland sporozoites, their proteomes are markedly different, in agreement with their increase in hepatocyte infectivity. The different sporozoite proteomes contain a large number of stage specific proteins whose annotation suggest an involvement in sporozoite maturation, motility, infection of the human host and associated metabolic adjustments. Analyses …

Literature As A Source For History; The Case Of The "Repen Ripangi" (1886), Willem Van Der Molen Oct 2008

Literature As A Source For History; The Case Of The "Repen Ripangi" (1886), Willem Van Der Molen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Public Perceptions Of The Separation Of Church And State, Donald Foster Oct 2008

Public Perceptions Of The Separation Of Church And State, Donald Foster

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Much of the scholarly work in the area of the separation of church and state in America has centered on such lofty goals as examining the Constitution of the United States and voluminous court documents. Others meticulously scrutinize every word ever uttered by the founding fathers on the subject. During the last two decades, there has been a considerable increase in the debate concerning the separation of church and state. The religious right has become determined to infuse our governmental institutions with a decidedly more religious tone, while the religious left prefers the separation of church and state as it …
