Pre-Testing As A Method Of Conveying Learning Objectives, Wendy S. Beckman Jan 2008

Pre-Testing As A Method Of Conveying Learning Objectives, Wendy S. Beckman

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Teaching methodologies involving student pre-testing have been used in K-12 education for a number of years. Although pre-testing has been conducted in some collegiate classrooms, there have been very few studies published regarding the effectiveness of the concept. This paper reports the results of a study in which one Introduction to Aerospace class was given a pre-test at the start of each unit of study, while a second class received a list of specific learning objectives at the start of each unit. The post-test unit test results of the two classes were then compared. The results of the study indicate …

The Daytona Beach International Airport In Uniform, Tim Brady

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The story of Daytona Beach International Airport is one which includes a mixture of politics and pioneers, depression and recovery, and peace and war. It represents a microcosm of life that slices across America's aviation experience and even deeper into her social consciousness. Today the airport is one of the top two or three busiest general aviation airports in the country owing mostly to the presence of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and its high volume flight training activities.

The Impact Of Donald A. Mcgavran’S Church Growth Missiology On The Church Of The Nazarene, Gary L. Mcintosh

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

On February 23, 2004 I interviewed Bill Sullivan by phone regarding the development of the Church Growth Movement in the Church of the Nazarene. The interview was recorded, transcribed, and then sent to Dr. Sullivan for his review. After receiving his edits, I wrote the following history of how Donald A. McGavran’s Church Growth missiology impacted the Church of the Nazarene. As the reader will discover, Bill Sullivan was the primary architect of translating Church Growth theory into action within this denomination.

From One Dialogue To Another: Johannine Polyvalence From Origins To Receptions, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2008

From One Dialogue To Another: Johannine Polyvalence From Origins To Receptions, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Throughout the ages, one of the primary mistakes committed in studying the Gospel of John has been to read the text monologically instead of dialogically. This error has often led some readers of the Fourth Gospel to “get it wrong,” needing correction by later interpreters. Put otherwise, many an ecumenical council or more nuanced interpretation has restored the tension that had been lost by interpreters who had sided with one aspect of John’s witness without considering another. Likewise, one flaw of modern literary-critical theories is that they have often sought to ascribe the sources of the Fourth Gospel’s theological tensions …

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Precision teaching methods began in the 1960s and have grown in utility and popularity over the last four decades (Downer, 2007). The methods are used to teach across multiple contents with an emphasis in achieving fluency as opposed to mere accuracy. Speed drills, frequently used to determine the learner's current level of fluency, were found to have a significant treatment effect on learning (McGreevy, 1978; Scott, Wolking, Stoutimore, & Harris, 1990; White & Haring, 1976). The purpose of this study is to isolate and measure the treatment effect of two key aspects of the speed drill and practice component of …

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of English determiners in dialogue journals by Japanese second language learners. The entries of the journals of six Japanese students in an ESL class collected over an eight-week period served as the main source of data for this research project. Three analyses wert! performed: the accuracy order of the articles (the. al an. and@). possessives. and other determiners: the accuracy order of predeterminers. central determiners. and postdeterminers: and an error analysis of the articles a/an. the. and the@ article. The following major findings emerged: the accuracy order of the English …

An Intergroup Perspective On Family Targeted Hurtful Messages Used In Romantic Relationships., Tyler M. Louk Jan 2008

An Intergroup Perspective On Family Targeted Hurtful Messages Used In Romantic Relationships., Tyler M. Louk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to identify the types of family-targeted hurtful messages used within the romantic relationship; to examine the specific characteristics of the hurtful messages and the amount of hurt that the message elicits; and to identify the types of responses romantic partners use. Participants were 277 undergraduate students enrolled in a communication course at a large mid-Atlantic university. Results indicated (a) romantic partners use six types of family targeted hurtful messages; (b) that intergroup membership does not influence individuals perceptions of the proximal factors of the hurtful message, but does influence individuals perceptions of the distal …

Impact Of Mine Land Reforestation And Revegetation On Water Quality In A Mid-Appalachian Watershed: A Stream Monitoring Study., Honghong Wei

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Beaver Creek watershed, a Mid-Appalachian watershed, located in Tucker County, West Virginia, was heavily impacted by coal mining and subsequently reclaimed by reforestation and revegetation. A stream monitoring study was conducted from 2000 to 2006 for the streams in the watershed to investigate the impact of land reclamation by reforestation and revegetation on water quality and macroinvertebrates. GIS tools and multivariate statistical analyses were applied to characterize land cover; assess temporal trends of the stream conditions; and examine the linkages among water quality, land cover, and biotic condition. In the entire watershed, 16 % of land was disturbed mine …

Gender And Racial Cues During The 2008 Democratic Party's Presidential Candidate Nomination Process: Social Responsibility In The 21St Century., Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii Jan 2008

Gender And Racial Cues During The 2008 Democratic Party's Presidential Candidate Nomination Process: Social Responsibility In The 21St Century., Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined a segment of the 2008 Presidential election, which presents a significant political pinnacle for the United States of America. For the first time in this young democracy’s history, a white woman (Hillary Rodham Clinton) and an African American man (Barack Obama) are frontrunners for the Presidency. However, during this inspiring moment in our nation’s history, one must realize research exists suggesting that agenda setting, framing, and gender or racial cues in the media can influence voters’ opinions of minority candidates. With that in mind, this study examined how race and gender are framed during the Democratic Presidential …

Motivation To Change Parenting In Mothers Of Children With And Without Adhd: Associations With Demographic And Psychological Characteristics., Stephanie M. Wagner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Motivation to change is considered an important factor in treatment adherence and outcome, yet there is a lack of research on parental motivation to change in the child psychotherapy literature. The current study examined the internal consistency of a measure of parental motivation, the Parent Motivation Inventory (PMI) and investigated associated demographic and psychological characteristics in 61 mothers of children who exhibited varying degrees of inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Results demonstrated that the PMI has high internal consistency, can distinguish between mothers of children with and without ADHD, and that an additional 7% of variance in the PMI can be …

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing Jan 2008

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The application of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for geomorphic assessment at a range of scales has increased over the past two decades. Before the advent of LiDAR, DEMs were generated using topographic maps or aerial photographs. The resulting grid-based DEMs generally had coarse resolutions ranging from 10 m to 30 m. Research has shown these resolutions to be acceptable when investigating large areas, but fail to provide adequate resolution for finer scale geomorphic assessment. LiDAR technology allows the creation of much finer resolution DEMs, ranging from 0.5 m to 6 m, depending on the sensor used. The Canaan Valley Institute …

Development Of Fabrication Processes For Silicon And Gallium Nitride Photonic Crystal Structures., Satish Yeldandi Jan 2008

Development Of Fabrication Processes For Silicon And Gallium Nitride Photonic Crystal Structures., Satish Yeldandi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Photonic crystals are being extensively investigated due to their capability of controlling the properties of light by confining photons in one, two and three dimensions. The sensitivity of optical properties of photonic crystals to the changes in refractive index at one or more lattice sites makes them potential building blocks of high-sensitivity biosensors. Fabrication of photonic crystals, including crucial steps such as lithography and plasma etching, is very challenging due to the nanoscale features. ICP-RIE is one of the preferred etching techniques because of its good control over the aspect ratio, high etch rates, low surface damage and many other …
