Conservatism & The Cost Of Equity Capital: An Information Perspective, Charles R. Pryor
Conservatism & The Cost Of Equity Capital: An Information Perspective, Charles R. Pryor
Theses and Dissertations
The bias implied by conservatism in accounting and its impact on information risk in equity markets is the subject of considerable debate. On one hand, opponents of conservatism believe that any kind of biased information is actually misinformation and thus increases uncertainty. Perhaps most prominent among opponents of conservatism is the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). The FASB contends that accounting information should be neutral—free from bias; a bias in favor of reporting either good or bad news is inconsistent with representational faithfulness and neutrality. On the other hand, proponents of conservatism point to incentives of management to manipulate financial …

Exploring Changes In Nascar-Related Titles In The New York Times And The Johnson City Press., Wesley Michael Ramey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
NASCAR has become one of America's fastest growing spectator sports, and corporate sponsors have played an important part in this upsurge in popularity. Race teams, drivers, and sanctioning bodies use the income that sponsors provide to operate at NASCAR events. This study provides an analysis of how corporate sponsorships have changed the way that NASCAR is presented in print journalism. Using Burke's method of indexing, NASCAR-related titles in the New York Times and the Johnson City Press from 1950 to present day are analyzed. The analysis reveals not only a steady increase in the number of NASCAR-related titles, but 4 …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Attachment And Coping Styles., Leslie C. Wilson
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Attachment And Coping Styles., Leslie C. Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of all relational bonds, perhaps the strongest and most complex is the one between parent and child. The dynamics of this relationship potentially hold the key to understanding the future psychological adjustment of the child. The current study was conducted to assess the relationship between perceived parental attachment and coping styles. Undergraduate psychology students (n=300) were administered a survey to examine perceived parental attachment, coping style, and gender. In conflict with previous studies, results indicated that neither respondents' gender nor level of perceived parental attachment was significantly related to participants' reported coping style. Increased knowledge and understanding of parental attachment …

Tea And Sympathy: The United States And The Sudan Civil War, 1985-2005., Peter William Klein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The specters of violence and economic insecurity have haunted the Sudan since its independence in 1956. The United States Congress has held numerous hearings on the Sudan's civil war and U.S. television news outlets have reported on the conflict since 1983. While attempting to engage the Sudan in a viable peace process, the U.S. Congress has been beset by ineffectual Cold War paradigms and an inability to understand the complexities of the Sudan civil war. U.S. television news programs, on the other hand, engaged in a process of oversimplification, using false dichotomies to reduce the conflict into easily digestible pieces. …

Restoring Blackland Prairies In Mississippi: Remnant-Restored Prairie Comparisons And Techniques For Augmenting Forbs, Andrew Clifford Dailey
Restoring Blackland Prairies In Mississippi: Remnant-Restored Prairie Comparisons And Techniques For Augmenting Forbs, Andrew Clifford Dailey
Theses and Dissertations
One knowledge gap hindering prairie restoration is uncertainty about when a restored prairie communities sufficiently resemble remnant prairie. I surveyed plant communities in remnant prairies, prairies > 5 years post-restoration, and prairies ≤ 5 years post-restoration in Mississippi. Remnants had the greater species richness. Restored prairies had less cover of woody plants and forbs but greatest non-natives. Restored prairies were not similar to remnant prairies (similarity index = 28.9 - 25.9%), primarily because restored prairies had fewer prairie forbs. Thus, restoration may take decades. Transplanting locallyapted prairie forbs into restored prairies may accelerate restoration, but this has not been evaluated adequately. …
Social Capital Determinants Of Environmentalism In Spatial Context, Kim Marie Steil
Social Capital Determinants Of Environmentalism In Spatial Context, Kim Marie Steil
Theses and Dissertations
Sociological studies of society-environment interactions are based on a premise that population well-being is dependent on the environment. Here, I argue that not only are people innately connected to the environment, but the environment also bonds people to one another. That is, people have a mutual obligation to one another to care for the environment. An often ignored factor is that individual participation toward protecting and improving the quality of the environment rests upon the local social and spatial context in which the individual is situated. The ability of individuals in a local environment to come together to identify issues, …

In order to design the protection system, preliminary hardware-in-the-loop testing is done using bus differential relay hardware and a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). In this thesis work, based upon the functionalities of the relay hardware the software differential relay model is designed and simulated using the RSCAD …
Predicting Compliance With Prescribed Organizational Information Security Protocols, Jordan Douglas Shropshire
Predicting Compliance With Prescribed Organizational Information Security Protocols, Jordan Douglas Shropshire
Theses and Dissertations
Why do some employees go out of their way to follow prescribed information security protocols, while others all but ignore organizational information security measures? A body of research known as organizational citizenship behavior provides insight into this issue. Theories of organizational citizenship behavior draw mainly from the psychological and sociological disciplines. They are used to explain the behaviors of employees who act in the best interest of the company, even when they don’t have to. Examples of citizenship behaviors include information sharing, voluntary reduction of compensation, and relinquishment of power for the benefit of the organization (Nathanson & Becker 1973). …

Comparison Of State Estimation Algorithms Considering Phasor Measurement Units And Major And Minor Data Loss, Srinath Kamireddy
Theses and Dissertations
Various sensors distributed across different parts of the electric power grid provide measurements to the control center operator for situational awareness of the system. Voltage transformer, current transformer, relay and phasor measurement units (PMU) are types of sensors for power system monitoring. The utilities monitor the operating condition of their system by processing the measurements received from these various sensors using a state estimator. A state estimator refines these measurements, compensates for any lost data and provides a snapshot of the power system. The operator at the control center does further analysis using energy management system tools based on the …
County Extension Coordinators' Opinions On The Role Of County Extension Offices In The Civic Engagement Of A Land-Grant University, Denise L. Legvold
County Extension Coordinators' Opinions On The Role Of County Extension Offices In The Civic Engagement Of A Land-Grant University, Denise L. Legvold
Theses and Dissertations
As universities enhance their civic engagement and build connections between campus and communities across the state, the county extension office and local staff have an opportunity to broker resources between the two entities. The question is not ‘if’ this needs to happen, but specifically what role Extension should play. County Extension Coordinators in Alabama have differing opinions about the role of their office and the value of specific engagement activities to the community. These differing opinions may make it difficult to achieve uniformity in what faculty can expect of a county extension office. Three different opinion groups were identified in …

Objectives were to determine inbreeding coefficients of affected (Hr/Hr), carrier (N/Hr), and normal (N/N) Quarter Horses, compared to Thoroughbreds, and evaluate economic effects of HC within the cutting horse industry. Of the top cutting horses from 1985 through 2006, 35 were confirmed carriers by either DNA analysis or production of affected offspring. Although 23% of the earnings from the leading …
An Examination Of Adult Age Differences In Implicit And Explicit Memory For Prescription Drug Advertisements, L Ty Abernathy
An Examination Of Adult Age Differences In Implicit And Explicit Memory For Prescription Drug Advertisements, L Ty Abernathy
Theses and Dissertations
Prescription drug advertisements are commonly seen in magazines and on television, and as a result, the public is familiar with them. Many drug ads are targeted toward older adults, who tend to use more medications, because they suffer from more chronic conditions than younger adults. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of drug advertising at persuading older adults to ask physicians for specific medications remains uncertain. Older adults’ explicit memory for drug ads is poor, but their implicit memory for drug ads may be better. Therefore, older adults may be implicitly persuaded by drug ads even when they cannot explicitly remember seeing them. …

Theses and Dissertations
Rafinesque’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) and southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius) are listed as species of concern in Mississippi. They use bottomland hardwood forests for roosting habitat; however, much of these forests in Mississippi have been lost or degraded. I seek to characterize availability and evaluate use of diurnal tree roosts for these presumably rare bats. Approximately 1,250 ha of bottomland hardwood forest on Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge were surveyed. I measured characteristics of 622 cavity trees. Analyses revealed that these bats most often used cavities of large diameter trees (≥70 cm DBH). Rafinesque’s big-eared bat and southeastern myotis roosted commonly …
