Improving The Design Of Low Volume Sealed Roads In Tanzania, Mfinanga A Dec 2008

Improving The Design Of Low Volume Sealed Roads In Tanzania, Mfinanga A

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The main objective of the study was to identify appropriate road designs for Low Volume Sealed Roads (LVSRs) with the aim of improving the design of such roads in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro regions in Tanzania where data for LVSRs were collected from primary and secondary sources in the two regions. The study found that by using an improved pavement design method specifically meant for LVSRs results in cost savings for LVSRs of up to 51% compared with the conventional method of pavement design in Tanzania. The study recommends that the pavement design …

The Dystopian Potential Of Corporate Law, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2008

The Dystopian Potential Of Corporate Law, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

The community of corporate law scholars in the United States is fragmented. One group, heavily influenced by economic analysis of corporations, is exploring the merits of increasing shareholder power vis-a-vis directors. Another group, animated by concern for social justice, is challenging the traditional, shareholder-centric view of corporate law, arguing instead for a model of stakeholder governance. The current disagreement within corporate law is as fundamental as in any area of law, and the debate is more heated than at any time since the New Deal. This paper is part of a debate on the audacious question, Can Corporate Law Save …

Distribution, Abundance, And Genetic Population Structure Of Wood River Sculpin, Cottus Leiopomus, Kevin A. Meyer, Daniel J. Schill, Matthew R. Campbell, Christine C. Kozfkay Dec 2008

Distribution, Abundance, And Genetic Population Structure Of Wood River Sculpin, Cottus Leiopomus, Kevin A. Meyer, Daniel J. Schill, Matthew R. Campbell, Christine C. Kozfkay

Western North American Naturalist

The Wood River sculpin Cottus leiopomus is endemic to the Wood River Basin in central Idaho and is a nongame species of concern because of its limited distribution. However, status and genetic population structure, 2 factors often central to the conservation and management of species of concern, have not been assessed for this species. We used backpack electrofishers to survey streams that were small enough (i.e., <10 m wide) to collect quantitative distribution and abundance data for Wood River sculpin, and we used mitochondrial DNA control region sequencing to investigate the distribution of genetic variation across the species' range. Of the 102 study sites surveyed, 20 sites (20%) had Wood River sculpin present, including 50%, 15%, and 0% of the sites predicted a priori to contain, possibly contain, or not contain the sculpin, respectively. Native redband trout Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri were present at 21 study sites, including 18 of the 20 sites that contained Wood River …

Catholic Social Teaching And Global Migration: Bridging The Paradox Of Universal Human Rights And Territorial Self-Determination, Vincent D. Rougeau Dec 2008

Catholic Social Teaching And Global Migration: Bridging The Paradox Of Universal Human Rights And Territorial Self-Determination, Vincent D. Rougeau

Journal Articles

In this essay, I will consider how law, religion, and democratic pluralism revolve around a particular issue: global migration. I use the term global migration to encompass a number of related issues that are often collapsed under the term immigration. In nations that have constructed their identities around waves of settlers or migrants -- places like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand -- immigration involves the formal reception of foreigners into the host country as potential new citizens. This is just one part of the migration of peoples around the globe. Migration also encompasses emigration, asylum, economic migration, and …

Lost Generations? Indigenous Population Of The Russian North In The Post-Soviet Era, Andrey N. Petrov Dec 2008

Lost Generations? Indigenous Population Of The Russian North In The Post-Soviet Era, Andrey N. Petrov

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses key findings concerning population dynamic of the Indigenous minorities living in the Russian North during the post-Soviet period, highlighted by the 2002 Census. The paper places recent demographic trends into the context of past and current economic, social and institutional changes. It also provides comparisons with Indigenous population dynamics in other parts of the Arctic. Although most Indigenous peoples of the Russian North were growing numerically, they still experienced effects of Russia’s economic crisis, primarily reflected in rapidly falling fertility and rising mortality in the middle-age cohorts. In addition, both the ethnic drift and legal changes seriously …

Design And Development Of A Prototype For A Web-Based Interface For Online Material For Tanzanian Youth, Mjema A.M

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A prototype of a web-based interface for an online database was developed to be used by youth organizations in Dar-es-Salaam. A participatory approach involving secondary students in the identification of user interface requirements, in designing and testing the prototype was used. A questionnaire was designed and manned in seven secondary schools in Dar-es-Salaam to estimate the Internet usage. Interviews were conducted to countercheck the questionnaire responses. The interview and the questionnaire helped to come up with a set of user requirements for the web-based interface of an online information search. From the specifications of the user requirements the author was …

New Distributional Records Of The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Western New Mexico And Evidence For Its Extirpation From The Zuni Mountains, Jennifer K. Frey

Western North American Naturalist

In the American Southwest, the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) occurs as disjunct populations in coniferous forests on mountaintops. There is a paucity of information concerning the species' distribution and habitat in western New Mexico. I report new records that document and verify the occurrence of red squirrels in additional montane areas in west central New Mexico, including the Mangas Mountains, Canovas Rim, Turner Mountain, Tularosa Mountains, Elk Mountains, Bearwallow Mountain, and Pinos Altos Mountains. I also report observations of red squirrels from an atypical habitat—low-elevation riparian forests. These new records suggest that the geographic distribution of the species …

Using a functional communication activities questionnaire as tool, we investigated the needs and performance on functional communication among 32 stroke patients with aphasia and 60 normal subjects. The researcher discovers that the importance of needs for functional communication and the independence of communication performance are significantly different between the two groups. Furthermore, a significant correlation is found between the importance of needs and the performance independence in the aphasic group. Finally, the language impairment level is moderately correlated with the importance of …

Rehabilitation And Prognosis Of Childhood Arterial Ischemic Stroke: A Casereport, Chia-Huang Dai, Wei-Jang Yen, Ta-Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong Dec 2008

Rehabilitation And Prognosis Of Childhood Arterial Ischemic Stroke: A Casereport, Chia-Huang Dai, Wei-Jang Yen, Ta-Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The incidence of ischemic stroke in childhood is two to 13 per 100,000 children per year. Although the incidence is much lower than adults, strokes in children not only cause a large number of deaths, but also induce significant disabilities. Because childhood ischemic strokes are rare, multi center, controlled trials should be performed to provide evidence based data related to effectiveness of medical treatment and rehabilitation. Current studies on the management of stroke in children are mainly based on casereports, uncontrolled trials, or are adapted from adult literature. An eleven-year-old, obese boy presented to the Emergency Department with an initial presentation …

Hippotherapy On Gross Motor Function In A Child With Hypotonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy: A 1-Year Follow-Up, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Shu-Ya Zhan, Shyi-Kuen Wu, Chen-Chia Yang, Yu-Chun Lee, Hong-Ji Luo

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hippotherapy is used to improve gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, the therapeutic effects of hippotherapy using specific position and its longitudinal improvements in children of hypotonic CP have not been thoroughly examined. A 6-year-old girl with hypotonic quadriplegic CP was noted to have generalized hypotonia and global delay in development before intervention. There was sustained improvement in gross motor function after 12-month hippotherapy. She received a 15-minute intervention twice a week for one year with two treatment positions being used, sitting backwards for the first 3 months and prone propped position for the next 9 …
