Antecedents Of It-Business Strategic Alignment And The Moderating Roles Of Goal Commitment And Environmental Uncertainty, Ali Alper Yayla Jan 2008

Antecedents Of It-Business Strategic Alignment And The Moderating Roles Of Goal Commitment And Environmental Uncertainty, Ali Alper Yayla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Aligning information technology (lT) strategy with business strategy has been one of the top concerns of practitioners and scholars. Despite the documented positive effects of strategic alignment on organizational success, only few organizations consider themselves in alignment. Although numerous studies exist about IT-business alignment, the empirical studies based on strong theories have been rare in the alignment literature. This dissertation attempts to fulfill this gap by proposing and empirically validating a comprehensive strategic alignment model. Drawing on prior literature, we identified five antecedents of alignment; centralization, formalization , shared domain knowledge, successful IT history and relationship management. We further hypothesized …

Attachment In Preadolescence, Meenakshi Menon Jan 2008

Attachment In Preadolescence, Meenakshi Menon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This one-year longitudinal study was designed to illuminate the direction of the causal arrow between children's perceptions of their mother's behavior and children's attachment style during a period of development that has been relatively neglected in research on attachment - preadolescence. The possibility that children's behavior problems moderate the influence of perceived parenting on attachment, or of attachment on perceived parenting, was also investigated. Participants were an ethnically diverse sample of 407 children (213 girls, 194 boys) who were in the fourth grade at initial testing (M age = 11 years 1 month). Measures included children's perceptions of five maternal …

Asha-Certified Speech-Language Pathologists, Patrick Roy Walden Jan 2008

Asha-Certified Speech-Language Pathologists, Patrick Roy Walden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study explored the types and uses of informal, on-the-job learning occurring among American Speech-Language-Hearing (ASHA)-certified Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) working in medical settings as part of a rehabilitation team. In addressing this purpose, a qualitative, phenomenological approach to research methodology was used. Participants were selected through a process of purposeful sampling, each meeting the criteria of having earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA and working in a medical setting as part of a rehabilitation team. Twenty-four SLPs from varying demographic profiles took part in one of three online data collection methods. Nine participants completed a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study compares the achievement in three multimedia instructed World Geography classes between two groups of community college students: those students who were U.S. educated (from primary to secondary schools) and those students who were educated outside of the U.S. (from primary to secondary schools). The research was conducted using three World Geography (GEA 2000) classes at a community college in South Florida, between August 2007 and December 2007. The selected students were divided into two groups: one of U.S. educated students and one of non-U.S. educated students, all of whom volunteered their participation at the beginning of the course. …

Bureaucratic Discretion In Policy Implementation : The Case Of Adjudicating Juveniles As Adults In Florida, Sandra M. Schrouder Jan 2008

Bureaucratic Discretion In Policy Implementation : The Case Of Adjudicating Juveniles As Adults In Florida, Sandra M. Schrouder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use of bureaucratic discretion by juvenile prosecutors and identify various factors influencing discretion in the implementation of juvenile transfer provision laws in Florida. The study contributes to the sparse literature on bureaucratic discretion by providing a framework of the factors influencing discretion. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in the case study of Florida. The dissertation embraces the idea of methodological pluralism by combining the findings of extensive interviews conducted with chief juvenile prosecutors along with descriptive analyses of archival data garnered from Florida's Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). This …

Unfair Housing On The Internet: The Effect Of The Communications Decency Act On The Fair Housing Act, Andrew J. Crossett Jan 2008

Unfair Housing On The Internet: The Effect Of The Communications Decency Act On The Fair Housing Act, Andrew J. Crossett

Missouri Law Review

The use of online advertisements is a relatively new, but rapidlygrowing phenomenon. Consumers have latched onto the idea of holding an online garage sale and its use has seen a marked increase. For example, online classified advertising services users increased eighty percent between 2004 and 2005. Consumers, however, sell more than baseball gloves and books online. One sector of the online advertisement market that has proven to be problematic is the sale of housing rental space. These advertisements would seemingly fit within the scope of the Fair Housing Act, which contains a provision regulating housing advertisements. However, these advertisements also …

Government Workers And Government Speech, Helen Norton Jan 2008

Government Workers And Government Speech, Helen Norton

Publications

This essay, to be published in the First Amendment Law Review's forthcoming symposium issue on Public Citizens, Public Servants: Free Speech in the Post-Garcetti Workplace, critiques the Supreme Court's decision in Garcetti v. Ceballos as reflecting a distorted understanding of government speech that overstates government's own expressive interests while undermining the public's interest in transparent government.

In Garcetti, the Court held that the First Amendment does not protect public employees' speech made "pursuant to their official duties," concluding that a government employer should remain free to exercise "employer control over what the employer itself has commissioned or created." …

Garbage Pails And Puppy Dog Tails: Is That What Katz Is Made Of?, Aya Gruber Jan 2008

Garbage Pails And Puppy Dog Tails: Is That What Katz Is Made Of?, Aya Gruber

Publications

This Article takes the opportunity of the fortieth anniversary of Katz v. U.S. to assess whether the revolutionary case's potential to provide broad and flexible privacy protection to individuals has been realized. Answering this question in a circumspect way, the Article pinpoints the language in Katz that was its eventual undoing and demonstrates how the Katz test has been plagued by two principle problems that have often rendered it more harmful to than protective of privacy. The manipulation problem describes the tendency of conservative courts to define reasonable expectations of privacy as lower than the expectations society actually entertains. The …

The Measure Of Government Speech: Identifying Expression's Source, Helen Norton Jan 2008

The Measure Of Government Speech: Identifying Expression's Source, Helen Norton

Publications

States and other governmental bodies increasingly invoke the government speech defense to First Amendment challenges by private parties who seek to alter or join what the government contends is its own expression. These disputes involve competing claims to the same speech: a private party maintains that a certain means of expression reflects (or should be allowed to reflect) her own views, while a public entity claims that same speech as its own, along with the ability to control its content.

In suggesting a framework for approaching these problems, this Article starts by examining the theoretical and practical justifications for insulating …

The Future Of 9-1-1: New Technologies And The Need For Reform, Philip J. Weiser, Dale Hatfield, Brad Bernthal Jan 2008

The Future Of 9-1-1: New Technologies And The Need For Reform, Philip J. Weiser, Dale Hatfield, Brad Bernthal

Publications

Our nation's 9-1-1 system's success to date belies the fact that its core premises will not continue to serve it effectively and it has come to a critical juncture. In particular, the balkanized nature of 9-1-1 operations that differ across jurisdictions and are supported by Byzantine funding mechanisms obscure a simple but profound development: our nation's emergency system is not keeping up with or taking advantage of technological change. Because the system continues to work and policymakers largely do not appreciate the system's technological limitations, decision makers not only fail to focus on this challenge but instead are all too …

The Chains Of The Constitution And Legal Process In The Library: A Post-Usa Patriot Reauthorization Act Assessment, Susan Nevelow Mart Jan 2008

The Chains Of The Constitution And Legal Process In The Library: A Post-Usa Patriot Reauthorization Act Assessment, Susan Nevelow Mart

Publications

Since the Patriot Act was passed in 2001, controversy has raged over nearly every provision. The controversy has been particularly intense over provisions that affect the patrons of libraries. This article follows those Patriot Act provisions that affect libraries, and reviews how they have been interpreted, how the Patriot Reauthorization Acts have changed them, and what government audits and court affidavits reveal about the use and misuse of the Patriot Act. The efforts of librarians and others opposed to the Patriot Act have had an effect, both legislatively and judicially, in changing and challenging the Patriot Act. Because libraries are …

Spectrum Policy Reform And The Next Frontier Of Property Rights, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield Jan 2008

Spectrum Policy Reform And The Next Frontier Of Property Rights, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield

Publications

The scarcity of wireless spectrum reflects a costly failure of regulation. In practice, large swaths of spectrum are vastly underused or used for low value activities, but the regulatory system prevents innovative users from gaining access to such spectrum through marketplace transactions. In calling for the propertyzing of swaths of spectrum as a replacement for the current command-and-control system, many scholars have wrongfully assumed the simplicity of how such a regime would work in practice. In short, many scholars suggest that spectrum property rights can easily borrow key principles from trespass law, reasoning that since property rights work well for …

Reexamining The Legacy Of Dual Regulation: Reforming Dual Merger Review By The Doj And The Fcc, Philip J. Weiser

Publications

Most debates over the structure of merger review in the telecommunications industry focus on the criticism that the role of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is entirely redundant in light of the review conducted by the antitrust agencies. The FCC's lack of a consistently applied standard only reinforces such criticisms. There are, however, cases where the FCC's review of a merger - and imposition of conditions that complement the existing regulatory regime - enable the antitrust agencies to clear mergers that would otherwise pose potential objections.

The central challenge for competition policy merger review is to structure the analysis of …

Gender Stereotypes In Spanish Language Television Programming For Children In The United States, Carlo Andre Romo Jan 2008

Gender Stereotypes In Spanish Language Television Programming For Children In The United States, Carlo Andre Romo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Children's television programming falling within the traditional Saturday morning time slot for four continuous Saturdays on five Spanish language networks in a southwest border city in the United States constituted the sample for this study. Each of the programs in the study was broken down and analyzed for character demographics, character behaviors and consequences received for those behaviors. Eight categories of behavior were scored, including four traditionally male behaviors (aggression, autonomy, construction, dominance) and four traditionally female behaviors (deference, dependence, harm avoidance, nurturing). The analysis of demographic data revealed male characters clearly outnumbered female characters and female characters were significantly …

Cultural Identity, Communication, And Cultural Reentry: Experiences Of American Students, Yuliya Kartoshkina Jan 2008

Cultural Identity, Communication, And Cultural Reentry: Experiences Of American Students, Yuliya Kartoshkina

Theses and Dissertations

In 2003 the National Education Association annual survey revealed that male teachers currently make up 35% of America's kindergarten through 12 th grade classroom teaching cadre. In grades kindergarten through sixth grade, men comprise 9% of the classroom teachers, and only 2% of classroom teachers inkindergarten through third grade are men. In 1994 Sadker and Sadker published Failing at Fairness, which examined gender biases in American kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms, including the effects of the overwhelmingly-female faculties. At the National Education Association's 2002 Representative Assembly, members adopted a measure to "identify, recognize, recruit and retain," more male teachers, …

Critical Factors For Training In Rural Psychology, Christine M. Boulton-Olson Jan 2008

Critical Factors For Training In Rural Psychology, Christine M. Boulton-Olson

Theses and Dissertations

Students in graduate level psychology training who intend to work in rural settings must be familiar with and educated in how rural life and identity impacts clients. Currently, there are few doctoral training programs in psychology that offer courses specifically tailored to rural populations despite the fact many psychologists are employed, or work with people, in rural settings. As such, there is a need to understand how to best prepare students in doctoral training in psychology for competent work as psychologists in rural areas. Given the nature of rural culture, rural mental health, urban versus rural characteristics, the current status …

The Use And Interpretation Of The Batería Iii With U.S. Bilinguals, Julie Esparza Brown Jan 2008

The Use And Interpretation Of The Batería Iii With U.S. Bilinguals, Julie Esparza Brown

Dissertations and Theses

Within each classroom, many children excel academically while others struggle. Some students' difficulties are such that they require placement into educational programs different from grade level core and perhaps delivered outside of general education classrooms. For many, special education programs are the lifeline to reach their innate potential. For others misplaced into special education, their opportunities may be truncated. For the past 40 years (Dunn, 1968), disproportionate representation of minority children in some disability categories has been a problem. Educators commonly ask "Is a child's difficulties due to language differences or a learning disability?" One key area of confusion relates …

Glacial Ecosystems, Amy Hodson, Alexandre M. Anesio, Martyn Tranter, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Osborn, John Charles Priscu, Johanna Laybourn-Perry, Birgit Sattler

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is now compelling evidence that microbially mediated reactions impart a significant effect upon the dynamics, composition, and abundance of nutrients in glacial melt water. Consequently, we must now consider ice masses as ecosystem habitats in their own right and address their diversity, functional potential, and activity as part of alpine and polar environments. Although such research is already underway, its fragmentary nature provides little basis for developing modern concepts of glacier ecology. This paper therefore provides a much-needed framework for development by reviewing the physical, biogeochemical, and microbiological characteristics of microbial habitats that have been identified within glaciers and …

Other Hispanic An Analysis Of Nyc Honduran Political Participation., Maximo Geraldo Martinez Jan 2008

Other Hispanic An Analysis Of Nyc Honduran Political Participation., Maximo Geraldo Martinez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies conducted on Latino immigrants and political participation primarily focuses on their large population groups such as Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans. However, this study centers on Central American Hondurans, also a group with substantial populations in U.S. cities. The theoretical idea central in examining this query is that U.S. Honduran political participation is related to their ethnic identity, association with churches in their U.S. communities, the extent of financial ties, and political participation (experiences) in their country of origin. This study will also add to the understanding of differences evident in U.S. Latino political participation. Uncovering differences of this …

Disability And “Late Style” In Music, Joseph N. Straus Jan 2008

Disability And “Late Style” In Music, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

“Late style” is a longstanding aesthetic category in all the arts. Late-style music is presumed to have certain internal qualities (such as fragmentation, intimacy, nostalgia, or concision) and to be associated with certain external factors (such as the age of the composer, his or her proximity to and foreknowledge of death, lateness within a historical period, or a sense of authorial belatedness with respect to significant predecessors). Upon closer inspection, it appears that many of these external factors are unreliably correlated with a musical style that might be described as late. Late style is often better correlated with the bodily …

Does Student Passivity Exist? The Impact Of The Student And Instructor On Involvement In And Outside Of The College Classroom., Robert J. Sidelinger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The classroom is the center of students' formal educational experience. It is often the one place students have an opportunity to interact with faculty. This dissertation explored the issue of student involvement both inside and outside of the college classroom. First, this study qualitatively examined in-class involvement from the students' perspective. Based on students' descriptions of their perceptions of their involvement/noninvolvement, and their perceptions of other students' involvement/noninvolvement, six themes (e.g., Active Involvement) emerged for in-class involvement and eight themes (e.g., Student Passivity) for in-class noninvolvement. Second, this study quantitatively examined factors (i.e., student characteristics, perceived instructor communication strategies, and …
