In several species, a family of nuclear receptors, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) composed of three isotypes, is expressed in somatic cells and germ cells of the ovary as well as the testis. Invalidation of these receptors in mice or stimulation of these receptors in vivo or in vitro showed that each receptor has physiological roles in the gamete maturation or the embryo development. In addition, synthetic PPAR gamma ligands are recently used to induce ovulation in women with polycystic ovary disease. These results reveal the positive actions of PPAR in reproduction. On the other hand, xenobiotics molecules (in herbicides, …

Mainstream And Alternative News In Seattle: A Comparative Media Frame Analysis Of Wto Protest Coverage, Richard Feffer S. Jan 2008

Mainstream And Alternative News In Seattle: A Comparative Media Frame Analysis Of Wto Protest Coverage, Richard Feffer S.

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

Seattle was the site of one of the largest protests in recent American history. In 1999, tens of thousands of demonstrators representing a multitude of causes gathered in downtown Seattle to protest the meetings of the World Trade Organization and the larger issue of globalization. While many of the protest events consisted of peaceful marches and demonstrations with isolated incidents of violence, research on the media coverage of these events found that the mainstream media often minimized the contributions of the protesters, portrayed them as violent and disruptive, and showed support for the ability of the police to maintain order. …

Technology And Signal Processing For Brain-Machine Interfaces, Justin C. Sanchez, Jose C. Principe, Toshikazu Nishida, Rizwan Bashirullah, John G. Harris, José A.B. Fortes Jan 2008

Technology And Signal Processing For Brain-Machine Interfaces, Justin C. Sanchez, Jose C. Principe, Toshikazu Nishida, Rizwan Bashirullah, John G. Harris, José A.B. Fortes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) aid disabled humans. BMI systems face challenges such as interfacing with neural tissue, selecting the most appropriate control signals, acquiring data and decoding patient intent in implantable or wearable computers. They must be able to adapt to different variety of behavioral states. Today's hybrid BMI systems consume less power and are made to chronically extract control commands from the nervous system. In terms of signal processing approaches, one challenge for BMI data analysis is learning how to handle large multi-input multi-output systems with signal representations that span continuous and discrete time. BMI systems also need sufficient information …

Preferred Coaching Qualities In Ncaa Division I College Athletes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Basketball Players From The Millennial Generation, Edward Carl Hoffman Jan 2008

Preferred Coaching Qualities In Ncaa Division I College Athletes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Basketball Players From The Millennial Generation, Edward Carl Hoffman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The millennial generation, otherwise known as the Echo Boomers, is a generation with characteristics that few previous generations have possessed. In the world of sport, this generation is currently dominating the ranks of collegiate athletics. Moreover, the coaching ranks are just beginning to experience the characteristics of this exceptional group of people. Thus, the purpose of the study was to examine the preferred coaching styles of athletes from the millennial generation at the NCAA Division I level from a semi-structured qualitative perspective. A secondary purpose was to examine these characteristics from a gender perspective. After analyzing the data, five themes …

Skillsets Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Beginning Teachers In The State Of Georgia, Martha Johnson Noble Jan 2008

Skillsets Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Beginning Teachers In The State Of Georgia, Martha Johnson Noble

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the perceptions held by beginning Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (GA TAPP) teachers, beginning traditionally certified teachers, and their school administrators from three high schools in the Northeast Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) district in the state of Georgia during the 2007-2008 school year. The study sought to identify specific skills and common characteristics of beginning teachers from GA TAPP and traditionally certified teachers that may contribute to beginning teachers performance in the classroom setting. A face-to-face interview was conducted with three beginning teachers from the GA TAPP program, three beginning teachers from the traditionally certified programs, …

Roles And Responsibilities Of The Georgia Special Education Paraprofessionals And The Impact Of The Nclb Mandates: An Assessment By Georgia Administrators, Special Education Teachers, And Special Education Paraprofessionals, Donna Lynn Archibald

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This descriptive study was based on quantitative data from a total of 76 school personnel that consisted of 18 administrators, 37 special education teachers, and 21 special education paraprofessionals from two high schools, one middle school and two elementary schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of roles and responsibilities performed by the Georgia special education paraprofessionals and the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) on those roles and responsibilities as perceived by administrators, special education teachers and special education paraprofessionals. A survey was sent to all respondents for their input that covered …

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Srinivasa Shivakar Vulli, Sanjeev Agarwal Jan 2008

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Srinivasa Shivakar Vulli, Sanjeev Agarwal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Individual-Based modeling has gained popularity over the last decade, mainly due to its proven ability to address a variety of problems, including modeling complex systems from bottom-up, providing relationships between component level and system level parameters, and relating emergent system level behaviors from simple component level interactions. Availability of computational power to run simulation models with thousands to millions of agents is another driving force in the wide-spread adoption of individual-Based modeling. in this paper, we propose an individual-Based modeling approach to solve engineering design and optimization problems using artificial ecosystems (AES). the problem to be solved is "mapped" to …

Real-Time Implementation Of A Statcom On A Wind Farm Equipped With Doubly Fed Induction Generators, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2008

Real-Time Implementation Of A Statcom On A Wind Farm Equipped With Doubly Fed Induction Generators, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Voltage stability is a key issue to achieve the uninterrupted operation of wind farms equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during grid faults. This paper investigates the application of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to assist with the uninterrupted operation of a wind turbine driving a DFIG, which is connected to a power network, during grid faults. The control schemes of the DFIG rotor- and grid-side converters and the STATCOM are suitably designed and coordinated. The system is implemented in real-time on a real time digital simulator. Results show that the STATCOM improves the transient voltage stability and therefore …
